Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Josh Jackson (leg) remains on crutches.
Jackson underwent surgery late last month to repair a broken left fibula he suffered in that devastating 49-35 loss to Old Dominion on Sept. 22. Per HC Justin Fuente, Jackson might be able to balance well enough on both feet to start playing catch again in a few weeks. Clearly, we're a long ways from even starting to talk about a potential return. At the time of his injury last month, Fuente said Jackson could return "maybe at the end of the year, maybe not." Date:

Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Josh Jackson will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair a broken left fibula.

He suffered the injury in Saturday's devastating 49-35 loss to Old Dominion. At the time he went down early in the fourth quarter, the game was tied 28-28. Per HC Justin Fuente, Jackson could return "maybe at the end of the year, maybe not," which sounds a bit ominous. Ryan Willis will get the first opportunity to replace him. Also keep an eye out for redshirt freshman Hendon Hooker, who could take over if Willis struggles.
Sep 24 - 1:12 PM

Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Josh Jackson was carted off in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game at Old Dominion with an apparent left foot injury.

Should Jackson be sidelined for an extended period of time, that would be a major blow for the Hokies to absorb as they look to contend in the ACC Coastal. The redshirt sophomore, who returned to the field on crutches with a boot on his left foot, entered Saturday's game having completed 66.7 percent of his passes and thrown for 424 yards and three touchdowns. Redshirt junior Ryan Willis, who played two seasons at Kansas before transferring to Virginia Tech, replaced Jackson in the lineup.
Sep 22 - 6:53 PM

Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Joshua Jackson went 12-of-16 for 217 yards and one touchdown in Saturday's 62-17 win over William and Mary.

Jackson (6'1/215) also scored an eight-yard rushing touchdown. The redshirt sophomore wasn't asked to do much passing with only 16 pass attempts, but he made the most of them by throwing for 13.6 yards per attempt. As a freshman, Jackson threw for 2,991 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season. He has a chance to best those numbers on a good Virginia Tech team. Jackson has an easy matchup next Saturday against East Carolina.
Sep 8 - 5:45 PM

Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Joshua Jackson completed 16 of his 26 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns in Monday's 24-3 win over Florida State.

While Jackson wasn't spectacular in Monday's season opener he took care of the football, which was key given the dominance of the Virginia Tech defense. Jackson, who threw for 2,991 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season, did a good job of leading the Virginia Tech offense as the Hokies won their ACC opener.
Sep 3 - 11:40 PM

Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Joshua Jackson has been named the starting quarterback.

Virginia Tech HC Justin Fuente said, "Josh, barring any unforeseen circumstances, he’s the starter." This was the assumption after Jackson cleared his potential academic hurdle. But junior QB Ryan Willis -- a transfer from Kansas -- and other quarterbacks were splitting first team reps with Jackson a couple weeks ago in an attempt to give everyone a fair chance. Jackson (6'1/215) threw for 2,991 yards and 20 touchdowns adding 324 yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground as a redshirt freshman. This is the first season Fuente has had an incumbent QB as his week 1 starter at Virginia Tech. The Hokies open the 2018 season against Florida State on Sept. 3.

Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Joshua Jackson is splitting reps with junior QB Ryan Willis.

After being cleared of a potential academic issue, most assumed Jackson would retain his starting role after turning in a solid 2017 campaign. This doesn't seem to be the case at the moment as Willis is splitting reps with Jackson. This is something to monitor over the next few weeks. If Willis continues to hang around and draw first-team reps there may be more of a competition than we thought.
Aug 6 - 6:30 PM

Multiple outlets are reporting that Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Joshua Jackson is no longer facing a potential academic hurdle to eligibility.

Per both David Teel of the Daily Press and Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times, Jackson's academic issue has been "resolved" and he's currently a member of the team. Word surfaced in early June that he was dealing with a classroom concern, one which could have potentially kept him out of action this fall. With that apparently squared away, he should be good to go for summer workouts and August camp beyond. Jackson is looking to retain his starting role after throwing for 2,991 yards (59.6% completions) with a 20/9 TD/INT ratio this past season. He added 274 yards rushing on top of that. Hendon Hooker and Ryan Willis figure to push him in camp as best they can, but this is Jackson's job until he stumbles.
Jun 19 - 11:06 AM

Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Joshua Jackson recorded the highest passer rating in the ACC on plays lasting 2.6 seconds or longer.

Jackson is a talented player but is currently at risk of a suspension due to academic concerns. He started all 13 games for the Hokies last season, throwing for 2,991 yards and 20 touchdowns while adding another 274 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. If the rumors of Jackson's eligibility prove to be true, backups Hendon Hooker and Ryan Willis will have a crack at the starting job.
Jun 13 - 12:28 PM

The Athletic's Bruce Feldman hears that contrary to earlier reports, Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Joshua Jackson (academics) has not been suspended indefinitely by the team.

While Jackson apparently remains in good standing with the team at this juncture, his availability for the fall may be in question due to academic concerns. His father told the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Thursday that clarity as to the quarterback's situation should come in "two days," so we may hear more from this story either later on Friday or over the weekend. Jackson started all 13 games for the Hokies last season, throwing for 2,991 yards (59.6% completions) with a 20/9 TD/INT ratio. Backup quarterbacks Hendon Hooker and Ryan Willis would be thrust into the August spotlight should Jackson find himself in an eligibility lurch upcoming.
Jun 8 - 11:05 AM

Mike McDaniel of ESPN Radio's Blacksburg affiliate reports that Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Joshua Jackson (academics) has been suspended indefinitely.

Per McDaniel, Jackson has been suspended "pending an investigation into an academic issue." No further information has surfaced as of yet as to the exact nature of this investigation, but the quarterback's father is saying that more about his status with the team should be known in the next few days. This past season, the 6-foot-1, 203-pounder threw for 2,991 yards (59.6% completions) with a 20/9 TD/INT ratio while starting all 13 games. Should this suspension end up costing him August camp and beyond, Virginia Tech would require a backup option such as Hendon Hooker or Ryan Willis to step up in his place.
Jun 7 - 1:27 PM

Virginia Tech redshirt freshman QB Josh Jackson completed 14-of-21 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown along with an interception in a 10-0 blanking of Virginia on Friday.

Jackson added 37 yards on nine carries. This was an atrocious offensive game, although you do have to give at least a little bit of credit to both defenses. The only touchdown in the game came on an eight-yard throw from the freshman quarterback to Chris Cunningham on a run-pass option. It was a solid -- if flawed -- first full season for Jackson, and he'll get a chance to finish the season on a strong note in Virginia Tech's bowl game.
Fri, Nov 24, 2017 11:05:00 PM

Virginia Tech redshirt freshman QB Joshua Jackson completed 13-of-27 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown while rushing for an additional score in Saturday's 24-3 win over Duke.

While this was not the most statistically noteworthy of games by Jackson, he got the job done nonetheless. The 6-foot-1, 211-pounder tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds of the first half and ran the ball in for a six-yard score late in the third quarter. Jackson has now accounted for 19 touchdowns in eight games this season. He's done a fine job of navigating the Hokies through the campaign and will try to keep it going in a big road showdown with Miami next weekend. Virginia Tech improved to 7-1 with Saturday's win.

Virginia Tech redshirt freshman QB Joshua Jackson threw three touchdowns in a 59-7 shellacking of North Carolina on Saturday.

This was ugly from the start. Jackson (6'1/211) didn't have much accuracy throwing the football, but he didn't need to. The Tar Heels are among the worst Power 5 teams in the country, and the Hokies took advantage of it. Jackson could have had many more scores if he wasn't pulled in the second half with the game out of hand. They'll take on Duke next week.
Sat, Oct 21, 2017 06:55:00 PM

Virginia Tech redshirt freshman QB Joshua Jackson completed 29-of-44 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions in a 31-17 loss to Clemson on Saturday.

Jackson (6'1/211) had easily the worst game of his Hokies' career on Saturday, which isn't surprising considering he was facing one of the best defenses in the country in Clemson. He threw two costly interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown that basically eliminated Virginia Tech from competition. Jackson should get back on track next week against Boston College.
