Georgia senior CB DeAndre Baker was named the winner of the 2018 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award.
Baker (5'11/185) won the award over fellow finalists Greedy Williams (LSU) and Julian Love (Notre Dame). The Jim Thorpe Award is given out annually to the top defensive back in the country. This season, Baker registered 40 tackles, a pair of interceptions and nine passes defended over the course of 12 games played. ESPN's Todd McShay ranks the Georgia standout as the No. 15 overall prospect in the draft-eligible pool. Dec 6 - 7:47 PM

Rivals Mike Farrell believes Georgia senior CB Deandre Baker is the "best defensive back prospect for the 2019 NFL Draft."

Farrell had serious questions about Baker coming out of high school and said, "Baker was a skinny cornerback with solid skills coming out of high school, but was a three-star prospect because of questions about his strength." Farrel now believes Baker has "lived up to the hype" this season and expects him to be one of the top corners off the board.

Pro Football Focus lists Georgia senior CB Deandre Baker third on their list of the top 32 draft prospects for 2019.

The only players ranked higher than Baker are Nick Bosa from Ohio State and Justin Herbert of Oregon. Baker has been a menace this year for the one-loss Bulldogs, and per PFF, he's made a play on the ball in 33 percent of his targets. He doesn't have elite size (5'11/185) but his ability to stick with wideouts and make plays is assuredly going to have him in the first-round conversation, even in a strong defensive class.

Georgia senior CB Deandre Baker "allowed" negative yards when targeted against Middle Tennessee State.

Baker (5'11/185) also had an interception. The elite corner has allowed a 33.7 passer rating when targeted this season and is well on his way to being a Day 1 or Day 2 NFL Draft pick. Before the season, Pro Football Focus listed Baker as the top cornerback of the 2019 class after not allowing a touchdown in 372 snaps as a junior.

Georgia senior CB Deandre Baker allowed just four yards after the catch in Saturday's 41-17 win over South Carolina.

Baker also recorded one interception and two pass-breakups, good for just a 39.8 passer rating allowed. The flip side to these stats is that he allowed receptions on 6-of-9 targets that went his way. The Bulldog corner is one of the top players in this draft class at his position and is doing a good job of keeping that reputation this season. Things won't get much harder for him as they take on Middle Tennessee State next week.

Pro Football Focus lists Georgia senior CB Deandre Baker as the top cornerback in the 2019 class.

Baker comes ahead of LSU's Andreaz "Greedy" Williams, and Michigan's Lavert Hill, Auburn's Jamel Dean and SMU's Jordan Wyatt round out their top five at the premium position. Quarterbacks had a rating of just 32.7 when they targeted Baker last year, and he didn't allow a touchdown in his 372 snaps in 2017. They do note that Baker can be late to react to back-shoulder throws, and he can get "grabby" when attacking wideouts. Still, there's a reason why Baker is considered the leader of the Georgia defense, and there's a good chance he's one of the first cornerbacks off the board in 2019.

Quarterbacks managed a QB rating of just 32.7 when targeting Georgia senior CB Deandre Baker last season.

Per Pro Football Focus, that dismal quarterback rating on opposing targets is the second-best among returning SEC corners. Another fun stat for the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Baker -- he did not allow a touchdown pass in 372 snaps last season and held receivers to a scant 38 yards after the catch when they did manage to haul in the ball against him. Baker could have jumped for the NFL Draft this past winter, but will instead be suiting up in Athens for one more season as he tries to help his Bulldog brothers finish the championship run which they fell just short of in January.

NFL.com's Chase Goodbread believes Georgia senior CB Deandre Baker will be the "unquestioned veteran leader" of the defense.

Baker (5'11/180) would have likely been drafted last season but decided to stay at Georgia for his senior year. He recorded three interceptions, including one in the national championship game against Alabama. GoodBread cites Pro Football focus and says "Baker allowed the fewest yards after the catch last year (38) of any SEC cornerback, and didn't allow a touchdown in 372 snaps." Even with a solid junior season in his back pocket, Baker's draft stock will largely depend on the quality of his play this upcoming season.

Georgia junior CB Deandre Baker will return to school for the 2018 season.

Baker (5'11/180) likely would have gone off the board at some point on Day 3 had he declared for the spring draft. He's an active, albeit somewhat undersized, corner. For the 2017 campaign, the junior registered 44 tackles, three interceptions and nine passes defensed.

Georgia starting sophomore CB Deandre Baker will miss Saturday's game against Vanderbilt due to an undisclosed injury.

The Bulldogs are unranked heading into Saturday's contest with a record of 4-2. Baker appeared in six games this season and started the last two. Vanderbilt is not exactly a threat to throw the football consistently.
