Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke is listed as the starter on depth chart for Saturday against Nebraska, but HC Mark Dantonio declined to officially announce who will start at quarterback.
Rocky Lombardi is listed as the backup on depth chart. But again, this could end up meaning very little. "I really don’t think it’s in this team’s best interest to air those decisions prior to football games," Dantonio said. "I think that’s something that needs to be kept in-house, for everybody’s best benefit. That’s how I handle those things." Lewerke started last week against Ohio State but was lifted for Lombardi on the final drive of the first half. Later on, Lewerke re-entered. We would assume this decision will be a game-time call in Lincoln. Nov 13 - 2:03 PM

Date:

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke completed 11-of-28 passes for 128 yards and an interception in Saturday's 26-6 loss to Ohio State.

Lewerke started off so poorly that he was replaced by Rocky Lombardi in the first half before later coming back into the game. As a team, MSU managed just 12 first downs and 274 yards in the game. Whether or not the redshirt junior is able to retain his starting job against Nebraska next weekend, this has devolved into a lost campaign.
Nov 10 - 4:25 PM

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke was benched in favor of redshirt freshman QB Rocky Lombardi in the first half of Saturday's game against Ohio State.

Lewerke was 8-of-16 for 84 yards prior to being pulled in favor of Lombardi. The redshirt junior has been dealing with a shoulder injury over the past few weeks, but even when healthy this year, has mostly underwhelmed.
Nov 10 - 1:44 PM

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke (shoulder) is suited up in advance of Saturday's game against Ohio State.

Lewerke would appear to be trending toward another start, here. He dinged up his shoulder against Penn State several weekends back, then subsequently sat out against Purdue before returning (ineffectively) in last Saturday's win over Maryland. Rocky Lombardi would see the field if Lewerke is scratched late, but so far, so good.
Nov 10 - 11:39 AM

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke (shoulder) completed 11-of-20 passes for 87 yards and an interception in Saturday's 24-3 win over Maryland.

Lewerke sat against Purdue last weekend due to a shoulder injury which he's been dealing with over the past few weeks. While the redshirt junior was able to play on Saturday, he was essentially a statistical non-factor. A huge game from RB Connor Heyward (157 yards rushing, two touchdowns) and a dominant defensive performance were what ultimately propelled MSU to the win, here. Lewerke figures to be needed for a bigger game next weekend, when Sparty tangos with Ohio State.
Nov 3 - 3:54 PM

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke (shoulder) warmed up with the starters ahead of Saturday's game against Maryland.

Lewerke will apparently return to the starting lineup after missing last week's game against Purdue, a contest Sparty won with backup Rocky Lombardi flashing in a big way. We would have to imagine that Lewerke will be on a short leash today.
Nov 3 - 11:57 AM

Michigan State QB coach Brad Salem told reporters that redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke (shoulder) had "his best Tuesday practice since his injury."

So that's something. Lewerke missed last Saturday's win over Purdue. He and redshirt freshman QB Rocky Lombardi are currently listed as co-starters on the depth chart ahead of Saturday's game against Maryland. HC Mark Dantonio has insinuated that Lewerke will get his starting job back once he's healthy, despite Lombardi's showing against the Boilermakers.
Oct 31 - 2:05 PM

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke (shoulder) and redshirt freshman QB Rocky Lombardi are listed as co-starters on the depth chart ahead of Saturday's game against Maryland.

This is getting interesting. On Tuesday, HC Mark Dantonio was asked if he saw any parallels between the Lewerke/Lombardi situation and the 2013 Andrew Maxwell/Connor Cook dilemma: "I don't think there's any comparison," he said, which should be counted as good news for Lewerke. Dantonio said Lewerke brought "a lot of substance" from his history of moving the offense before his shoulder injury. This is a fascinating situation to watch after Lombardi led MSU to a win over Purdue this past weekend.
Oct 30 - 1:12 PM

Michigan State HC Mark Dantonio said his starting quarterback decision will be a game-time decision.

"But expects both Lewerke and Lombardi to play," tweeted Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press. "Does not say who will start." This report follows another Saturday morning dispatch stating that Lewerke wasn't on the field for pregame warmups. Lewerke has since put on his pads and is currently throwing in warmups. He's officially a game-time call, but all signs over the past 48 hours have pointed towards Lombardi getting the call. Stay tuned.
Oct 27 - 11:27 AM

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke (shoulder) is not warming up in advance of Saturday's game against Purdue.

This follows numerous reports that stated Lewerke would almost assuredly not play in today's game. It looks like Rocky Lombardi will make his first career start against the Boilermakers.
Oct 27 - 11:04 AM

Spotlight Radio Network's Couch and the Rube show in East Lansing is reporting that Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke (shoulder) will not play in Saturday's game against Purdue.

Lewerke (6'3/215) has been playing through a shoulder injury sustained against Penn State two weekends ago. Should he be unable to suit up against the Boilermakers, Rocky Lombardi would draw the start. We have yet to receive official confirmation from the team that the redshirt junior signal-caller is going to be nixed, but we're not holding our breath for him to take the field.
Oct 26 - 1:41 PM

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke (shoulder) is listed as the starter on the team's depth chart ahead of the Purdue game.

He's coming off one of the most devastating performances you'll see, bombing against a rival on national TV (5-of-25 for 66 yards in a 21-7 loss to Michigan) and suffering a right shoulder injury along the way. Lewerke looks to be on track to start this weekend. Rocky Lombardi will get the call if he has a setback.
Oct 23 - 12:03 PM

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke said that he's dealing with a shoulder injury.

Lewerke was as bad as bad could be against Michigan on Saturday, hitting on just 5-of-25 passes for 66 yards in the 21-7 loss while ultimately being replaced by Rocky Lombardi in the fourth quarter. After the defeat, the redshirt junior said that he had injured his shoulder against Penn State last weekend. This would explain why he failed to practice during the lead-up to the UM game. Spartans HC Mark Dantonio reaffirmed after Saturday's contest that Lewerke remains his starter, though his health will tell the tale as to whether or not he's able to give it a go against Purdue next weekend. Lombardi would start in that spot if Lewerke can't play.
Oct 20 - 6:52 PM

Following Saturday's 21-7 loss to Michigan, Michigan State HC Mark Dantonio said that redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke is the unquestioned starter.

Lewerke had the worst day of his career Saturday, as he completed 5-for-25 passes for 66 yards before being replaced by redshirt freshman Rocky Lombardi late in the fourth quarter. But that has done nothing to change the redshirt junior's status moving forward in the eyes of Dantonio. Something to keep an eye on moving forward is Lewerke's health, as Dantonio said that the starting QB did not practice at all this week due to an undisclosed health issue.
Oct 20 - 5:33 PM

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke completed just 5-of-25 passes for 66 yards in Saturday's 21-7 loss to Michigan.

Lewerke did score a touchdown on a four-yard trick-play catch in the third quarter, but that opportunity only came about due to a Michigan fumble deep in its own territory. The Spartans finished with just 94 yards of total offense on Saturday. Rocky Lombardi eventually came on to replace Lewerke in the fourth quarter. We wouldn't expect Lewerke to be in serious danger of losing his starting job, but this was a brutal performance.
