Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery forced 14 missed tackles in Saturday's 27-24 win over Drake.
Montgomery is only six missed tackles away from Devin Singletary, the leader this season. Montgomery is looking to lead the FBS in missed tackles again after finishing with the most last season. He also recorded 118 of his 145 total rushing yards after contact. Montgomery has proven over that past two seasons that he refuses to go down on first contact. He will likely play in one last game for the Cyclones before declaring for the NFL Draft. He has a legitimate chance to be the first running back off the board. Dec 2 - 1:58 PM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery ran 33 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-24 victory over Drake on Saturday.

He also had two of the team's 17 receptions. When Montgomery woke up on Saturday morning, he probably thought he was headed towards an easy day, perhaps 12 first half touches before he was put on ice in the second half of what was an assured blowout (Iowa State was favored by more than 40 points). Instead, Drake gave the Cyclones everything they could handle, holding a lead late into the third quarter before an ISU touchdown and a scoreless fourth quarter. This turn of events should actually turn into a net positive for ISU. Whizkid HC Matt Campbell will no doubt use today's no-show as a motivational tool heading into bowl season. The Cyclones close up shop on the regular season 8-4.
Dec 1 - 3:08 PM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery ran the ball 19 times for 149 yards with three touchdowns in a 42-38 victory over Kansas State on Saturday.

This was a game that Kansas State lead 38-21 in the fourth quarter, but the Cyclones were able to pull off a tremendous comeback to give them the victory and keep Kansas State from qualifying for a bowl game. Montgomery was a big part of that, and the three trips to the end zone give him 10 on the season. He showed off the ability to make tacklers miss that made him so intriguing in 2017, and assuming he has a big game against Drake next Saturday, he should go over the thousand-yard mark.
Nov 24 - 10:35 PM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery rushed for 33 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries in Saturday's 24-10 loss to Texas.

Montgomery sat out the first half suspended as a result of his second-half ejection against Baylor last weekend. The Longhorns capitalized on his absence with a 17-3 halftime advantage. The 5-foot-11, 216-pound junior managed a late fourth-quarter touchdown after serving out his punishment, but it was far too little, too late for the Cyclones. Montgomery should be able to find room to work against Kansas State in Week 13.
Nov 17 - 11:21 PM

Iowa State will not to appeal junior RB David Montgomery's suspension for the first half of Saturday's game against Texas.

Montgomery was ejected in the third quarter of Saturday's win over Baylor following a skirmish with Bears DE Greg Roberts. That fight will cost Montgomery the first two quarters of this weekend's tilt with the Longhorns. Kene Nwangwu will likely start against Texas.
Nov 12 - 1:43 PM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery will have to sit out the first half of the Cyclones' November 17 game against Texas after he was ejected from Saturday's game against Baylor for fighting.

There were some questions regarding Montgomery's status in the aftermath of his third quarter skirmish with Baylor DE Greg Roberts, who was also ejected. Those questions have now been answered, but the penalty can be appealed if Iowa State chooses to do so. Should no appeal be filed -- or if an appeal is denied -- Kene Nwangwu stands to receive the starting nod against Texas.
Nov 10 - 9:55 PM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery was ejected from Saturday's game against Baylor for throwing a punch.

The matchup between the Bears and Cyclones got ugly during the third quarter, with the teams getting involved in two altercations following consecutive plays. The second altercation resulted in Montgomery and Baylor's Greg Roberts being ejected for throwing a punch. At the time of his expulsion, the junior running back was responsible for 53 yards rushing on 11 carries. Kene Nwangwu will see the majority of the action at running back moving forward.
Nov 10 - 5:57 PM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery forced 11 missed tackles in Saturday's game against Texas Tech.

Montgomery also recorded 82 of his 127 total rushing yards after contact. He is in the conversation to be the first running back off the board in the 2019 draft and it's well-deserved. Montgomery almost never goes down on first contact and is powerful yet elusive as a runner. Strong athletic testing at the combine could make his draft stock skyrocket into the top half of the first round.
Oct 28 - 10:04 AM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries in Saturday's 40-31 win over Texas Tech.

Montgomery (5'11/216) just keeps churning along. His ypc average won't impress you -- today it was 3.8 -- but won't let NFL Draft types tell you in the spring that this is a negative for his evaluation. Context is crucial. Montgomery has been dealing with injuries for most of the campaign and he's running behind a shoddy line. Montgomery is a versatile broken-tackle machine whose motor always runs hot.
Oct 27 - 5:26 PM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery forced 14 missed tackles on 28 carries against West Virginia, according to Pro Football Focus.

Montgomery (5'11/216) hans't been fully healthy this year, but he looked great in the upset win on Saturday. The junior back rushed for 189 yards (6.75 YPC) with many yards coming after forcing missed tackles. Pro Football Focus said, "A healthy Montgomery is as good as any running back in the country." Montgomery is up to 523 yards and four touchdowns on the year.
Oct 14 - 1:20 PM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery (arm) rushed for 189 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries in Saturday's 30-14 win over West Virginia.

Montgomery (5'11/216) was something of a question mark entering action this weekend, having sat out Iowa State's previous game against Oklahoma State nursing an arm injury. If that arm is still bothering him, it did not show on Saturday. Monty was on the money throughout, finishing with a season-best 189 yards on the ground. He's gone over 100 yards rushing in each of the last three games in which he's played and has scored touchdowns in each of his last four games. The Cyclones will have a few light days to revel in this win as they enter their bye week, then back to work in preparation for a Week 9 date with Texas Tech.
Oct 13 - 10:53 PM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery (arm) is warming up prior to Saturday's game against West Virginia.

This means that Montgomery is extremely likely to play barring a setback during warmups. ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reported he would early in the week so this was expected. He did note that his workload may be scaled back depending on how he's feeling, so that's something to look for. Montgomery will try to get going against West Virginia.
Oct 13 - 6:53 PM

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reports that Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery (arm) is expected to play in Saturday's game against West Virginia.

"Montgomery likely will play, but how much is to be determined," Rittenberg tweeted. Montgomery (5'11/216) missed last week's game at Oklahoma State and has been dinged up for much of the year. Because of that, Iowa State has regressed to No. 123 nationally in rushing offense. Despite injuries and a bad offensive line, however, Montgomery has run for 334 yards and three touchdowns in four games.
Oct 13 - 11:24 AM

Iowa State junior RB David Montgomery (arm) should be considered day-to-day for Saturday's game against West Virginia.

Montgomery (5'11/216) did not take the field against Oklahoma State this past weekend due to an arm injury sustained against TCU at the end of September. Said HC Matt Campbell elaborated on his status, saying that "[h]e looks healthy" before later adding that "it’s not the look, it’s the feel." If Montgomery can't play against the Mountaineers on Saturday, Sheldon Croney and Johnnie Lang would figure to see an uptick of carries.

Oct 10 - 5:57 PM

Iowa State junior RB Dylan Montgomery will not play in Saturday's game at Oklahoma State due to an arm injury.

As a result of Montgomery's absence the Cyclones will be playing without their starting running back and quarterbacks, as redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt is still recovering from a knee injury he suffered in early September. With Montgomery out of the lineup, Sheldon Croney and Johnnie Lang are two players who should see a lot of time in the Iowa State backfield.
