Alabama HC Nick Saban said after Saturday's win over The Citadel that redshirt junior S Deionte Thompson (knee) could have returned if needed.
Thompson left the game during the fourth quarter with what Saban labeled as a "bruised knee," stating that he could have put the safety back into the game but did not. From a scheduling standpoint giving the redshirt junior safety the rest of the day off was understandable, with Alabama still having to play Auburn and Georgia (SEC Championship game) the next two weekends. Alabama redshirt junior S Deionte Thompson (undisclosed) was taken to the injury tent during the second half of Saturday's game against The Citadel.

Thompson (6'2/196) struggled to make it off of the field under his own power, with team trainers taking him directly to the injury tent. With the Crimson Tide having games against Auburn (Nov. 24) and Georgia (Dec. 1) left to play, it wouldn't come as a surprise if trainers exercised even more caution with regards to the redshirt junior safety's status for the remainder of Saturday's game.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline writes that Alabama redshirt junior S Deionte Thompson "has shown significant improvement in his play this year."

Pauline's not the first to notice Thompson's forward step this season, with PFF landing him on their breakout stars list at the end of September due to his strong work through the first quarter of the campaign. The 6-foot-2, 196-pound redshirt junior has registered 35 tackles (1.5 for loss), a pair of interceptions and five passes defended in six games this season. Pauline graded Thompson as a fifth-round selection over the summer, but it's logical that he might start to rise toward a potential Day 2 selection so long as he continues his ascendency on the field.

Alabama redshirt junior S Deionte Thompson is currently second on Pro Football Focus' 2018 breakout stars list.

The praise has been non-stop for Thompson and it's warranted. In Thompson's 14 targeted passes, Thompson has two interceptions and four pass breakups while only allowing five receptions. Those stats play into PFF's 92.2 coverage grade. Thompson also has 24 tackles including six defensive stops. Shannon Sharpe has compared him to Ed Reed and NFL Draft Scout's Rob Rang called Thompson the biggest "riser" after Week 3's game against Ole Miss.

NFL Draft Scout's Rob Rang writes that Alabama redshirt junior S Deionte Thompson was the best "riser" after his play in Week 3 against Ole Miss.

The praise for Thompson has been loud in quality and quantity, with Shannon Sharpe calling him the best safety he's seen in college football since Sean Taylor. ". Thompson intercepted one pass, reading the eyes of Rebels’ quarterback Jordan Ta’amu to steal this interception and should have been credited with a forced fumble for delivering a wicked shot to abruptly end one of his eight rushes on the day," writes Rang. Thompson's rise has been a quick one, and it shouldn't shock anyone if the redshirt junior is one of the first defensive backs off the board. He certainly would be if the draft were held on Monday.

Shannon Sharpe tweeted that Alabama redshirt junior DB Deionte Thompson's "range and ball skills" remind him of Ed Reed.

The praise didn't stop there as Sharpe continued in another tweet saying Thompson "is the best college safety I’ve seen in since Sean Taylor." These are quite the comparisons from the Hall-of-famer and not ones that should be thrown around lightly. Thompson has played extremely well to start the season and has an interception and three passes defended through three games. It's tough to be as bold as Sharpe with any comparisons, but Thompson has a good chance at being a 1st round selection in the 2019 draft as long as his off-field issues don't haunt him.

Alabama coach Nick Saban was "pleased" with the way they covered Lousiville's wide receivers.

This wouldn't normally be news, but Louisville's wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick went on record this offseason saying that all of their wide receivers could beat Alabama's cornerbacks 1-on-1. That didn't quite pan out as Fitzpatrick recorded just 40 yards on three catches and Louisville's leading receiver from last season was held to a line of 1-22-0. Thompson and the Alabama secondary were supposed to be a weak spot on the team, but proved otherwise in a match up with a fairly strong receiving corps.

Alabama redshirt sophomore DB Deionte Thompson is dealing with a bruised knee.

Apparently there is optimism around Thompson's status for the playoff against Clemson. He fills a reserve role for Alabama.

Sean Villary-Samuel, the lawyer for Alabama redshirt sophomore DB Deionte Thompson, said that there is no video evidence that his client was involved in the spring brawl which led to his Monday indictment.

"Deionte Thompson was not involved in the assault of Noah Frillou, as many witnesses to the incident have indicated, and there is no video evidence demonstrating anything to the contrary," Villary-Samuel said in a statement. The March brawl in which Thompson was alleged to have participated resulted in the victim sustaining multiple broken bones in his face. Thompson is currently facing one felony count of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. Alabama has allowed him to play this season despite his legal troubles, with Tide HC Nick Saban reiterating on Monday after the indictment that "[w]e are not going to make any judgments until that process has been completed."

Alabama redshirt sophomore DB Deionte Thompson was indicted on an assault charge on Monday stemming from an arrest this spring.

Thompson was indicted along with three other men after allegedly assaulting an 18-year-old on March 18. The Beaumont Enterprise reports that the victim had four plates installed and his jaw wired shut after the incident. The paper also reports that Thompson's friend punched the victim after a racial slur was used, and that Thompson was one of three men who kicked the victim after falling to the ground.

Alabama redshirt sophomore DB Deionte Thompson turned himself in to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office on an outstanding arrest warrant on Friday.

Thompson had an arrest warrant issued against him in relation to an alleged felony assault on Thursday night. The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office booked him as a "fugitive of justice" on Friday. In a predictably sparse statement, Alabama HC Nick Saban said, "Once we have a better understanding of what happened, we will make a determination as to what needs to be done in terms of the appropriate course of action moving forward." The 6-foot-2, 190-pound defensive back was a four-star recruit for the 2015 cycle. After taking a redshirt during his initial year with the Tide, he registered nine tackles during the past campaign. Expect further details to emerge regarding Thompson's arrest and future with the team over the coming days and weeks.
