Michigan State redshirt junior DE Kenny Willekes will return to school for his senior season.
Willekes broke his fibula in the Redbox Bowl on New Year's Eve, and it's impossible to know how much that injury factored into his decision to return to school. What we can say is this is a tremendous return to the Michigan State defense, as he racked up 8.5 sacks for the Spartans in 2018. He was viewed as a Day 3 prospect before the injury, but if he plays well in 2019, that stock certainly has a chance to rise for Willekes. Jan 8 - 9:02 PM

Michigan State redshirt junior DE Kenny Willekes suffered a broken fibula in the Redbox Bowl.

Willekes (6'4/260) is another textbook example of why many NFL prospects sit out bowl games. The redshirt junior was a Day 3 prospect with Day 2 upside in the 2019 NFL Draft after racking up 8.5 sacks in 2018, but it's now likely that Willekes will return to school after suffering the broken leg. To be fair to the situation, Willekes may have returned to Michigan State anyways, and it's certainly arguable that he needed to play in the bowl to improve his overall draft stock, but it's a terrible outcome regardless.

Michigan State redshirt junior DE Kenny Willekes (ankle) left Monday's bowl game and is doubtful to return.

Willekes (6'4/260) was carted to the locker room in the second half of the Redbox Bowl with an ankle injury, and he is currently receiving X-rays. The redshirt junior was expected to make his decision regarding the NFL soon after the bowl game, so hopefully Willekes' injury isn't serious. A Day 3 prospect if he declares, Willekes had 8.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles heading into the Redbox Bowl.

Michigan State redshirt sophomore DE Kenny Willekes logged eight tackles (1.5 for loss) during the team's spring game.

Willekes initially walked on at Michigan State in 2015. While the 6-foot-4, 238-pounder has yet to register any statistical marks during a regular season game, Spartan Avenue's Connor Muldowney writes that he "solidified himself as a major contributor up front" this spring -- capped by his strong spring game performance -- and "may very well be starting games at defensive end this fall."
