Hawaii redshirt senior LB Jahlani Tavai will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.
A rough loss for Hawaii, albeit coming at the very tail-end of the campaign. Tavai (6'4/235) will sit out the final two games of the regular season while rehabbing and is not expected to be able to play in the Rainbow Warriors' bowl game. He has not played since Oct. 20 and now bows out for the season having recorded a team-leading 82 tackles (5.5 for loss) with two passes defensed and one fumble forced. As a redshirt senior, this shoulder surgery will spell the end of his collegiate career. Moving on, now, Tavai will look to impress in the draft process this spring. Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline currently grades him as a UDFA. Thu, Nov 8, 2018 12:43:00 PM

Hawaii redshirt senior LB Jahlani Tavai was named defensive player of the week by the Reese's Senior Bowl for his performance last Saturday against Army.

Tavai was a tackling machine last Saturday, notching 15 in the close loss to the Black Knights. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound defender was not among the initial Senior Bowl Watch List players, but executive director Jim Nagy admitted that was a mistake. Nagy notes his ability to "scrape and flow," but also that he's an effective blitzer who can make plays behind the line of scrimmage. The lack of top-notch competition -- and a suspension that cost him the opener -- could hurt his stock, but his production is going to be tough for NFL clubs to ignore.

Hawaii redshirt senior LB Jahlani Tavai was suspended for the season opener against Colorado State.

Tavai, who has had back-to-back 100+ tackle seasons, violated team rules and was suspended for the first game. In June, Tavai was arrested after an incident at a nightclub, so the suspension is likely tied to that. It's an obvious big loss for the Rainbow Warriors defense. Sophomore Penei Pavihi started in Tavai's place.

Hawaii redshirt senior LB Jahlani Tavai and running back Kaiwi Chung were arrested over the weekend after an incident in a nightclub.

It's reported that the players were arrested for third-degree misdemeanor assault following an alleged assault at a nightclub in Honolulu. According to a report from Hawaii News now, the players were involved in an incident that saw a woman being pushed to the ground at the club, and that they pursued the man who pushed the woman. It's unknown why they were arrested, and neither player was charged. There's also no word of suspension at this time.

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. ranked Hawaii redshirt junior ILB Jahlani Tavai as the No. 5 underclassman draft prospect at his position.

Tavai hauled in first-team All-Mountain West honors for the 2016 campaign. The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder did so on the strength of 128 tackles (19.5 for loss), six sacks, an interception and two fumbles forced. His 85 solo tackles were good for tops in the Mountain West, ditto those 19.5 tackles for loss.
