Utah redshirt senior LB Chase Hansen accepted an invitation to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl.
Hansen (6'3/230) was as productive of player on the defensive side of the ball as there was in the Pac-12, and is as big of reason why the Utes are going to play for the conference's championship on Friday as anyone on that side of the ball. There will be concerns about his size, but he could be a hybrid player at the next level because of his ability to help in coverage and in the run game. He'll be a must-watch for scouts in Mobile in January. Mon, Nov 26, 2018 05:22:00 PM

Utah redshirt senior LB Chase Hansen was named the Lott IMPACT Trophy Player of the Week for his performance against Oregon on Saturday.

Hansen (6'3/230) continued his wrecking ball ways against the Ducks over the weekend, registering a hearty 13 tackles in the 32-25 win. For the campaign as a whole, the redshirt senior standout has put in 88 tackles (19.0 for loss), five sacks, two interceptions (one of which he returned for a touchdown) and three passes defensed in 10 games. Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline believes that with strong testing during the predraft process, Hansen should have a shot at a later round selection in the spring.

Utah redshirt senior LB Chase Hansen is listed as one of Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline's "risers" for his play against UCLA on Friday.

Hansen was outstanding -- as he has been for most of the year -- against the Bruins, with five tackles and three pass breakups in the 41-0 rout of the Bruins. A former safety, Hansen has impressed with his ability in coverage, but he also has a nose for finding the football. "He possesses next-level computer numbers at 6-foot-3, 230 pounds with a 40 time in the mid 4.7s, and Hansen can play all three downs," Pauline writes. Solid predraft workouts should ensure Hansen a spot in the late rounds, and he has the skill set to line up as a situational linebacker on Sundays."

Washington HC Chris Petersen praised reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week Utah redshirt senior LB Chase Hansen.

Hansen, a former safety, had 12 tackles, 2.5 TFL, two sacks, a fumble recovery, and a game-sealing pick-six against NIU. "That guy has made a lot of plays for Utah over the years and what a heck of an athlete — to play him in the secondary and now at linebacker," Petersen said. "He’s just around the ball and fearless and physical. Really good player." As for Utah HC Kyle Whittingham, he calls Hansen "prototypical linebacker when you talk about playing at the next level." Whittingham added: "He has the size and strength, he’s 230-plus pounds. He’s got great speed and he’s instinctive and tough. He had all of those qualities as a safety, he has just transferred them closer to the line of scrimmage."

Utah redshirt junior S Chase Hansen (undisclosed) is expected to play in Friday's game against Arizona.

Hansen (6'3/220) was sidelined for fall camp, but managed to play in the Utes' first two games of the season before sitting against San Jose State this past Saturday. His return is no doubt a welcome one for the Utes -- Hansen had registered 14 tackles to lead the team through the first two games of the season. He earned Pac-12 honorable mention for the 2016 season after recording 90 tackles (7.5 for loss), three interceptions, three forced fumbles and nine passes defended.

In a Monday press release, Utah announced that redshirt junior S Chase Hansen "is unavailable to practice until further notice."

Utes HC Kyle Whittingham clarified that the defensive back has been dealing with an unspecified issue since before the start of camp. "He’s one of the best players in the conference," Whittingham said. "You always want to be full strength and have the best guys on the field, but if he’s not there, he’s not there. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. ranked Hansen as the No. 3 underclassman draft prospect at his position in the spring.

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. ranked Utah redshirt junior S Chase Hansen as the No. 3 underclassman draft prospect at his position.

After beginning his career with the Utes as a quarterback, Hansen (6'3/220) transitioned over to defense prior to the start of the 2016 season. That worked out well enough for him, as he would go on to log 90 tackles (7.5 for loss), three interceptions, nine passes defended and three forced fumbles. He earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention at the end of the campaign.
