Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year.
Minshew and crew fell just shy of making the Pac-12 title game and potentially giving the Playoff committee a little extra fat to chew on, but regardless of the came-up-just-short ending to WSU's regular season, the senior signal-caller has already started to rake in some postseason award goodies. He was earlier this week named the winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. Now, Pac-12 honors for his offensive brilliance. Minshew finished the pre-bowl campaign having thrown for 4,477 yards (70.6% completions) with a 36/9 TD/INT ratio. He will have one more chance to shine in the Alamo Bowl, against Iowa State on Dec. 28, and then it will be onward to try to make a sleeper draft run in the spring. Dec 4 - 8:56 PM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew has won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

This award is limited to seniors or fourth-year juniors, so Minshew didn't have a ton of competition for this one. That's not to take anything away from Minshew; just to point out why someone like Tua Tagovailoa or Dwayne Haskins isn't taking home (another) award. Minshew was outstanding, and the senior led the Cougars to a 10-2 record in 2018 and will next be seen in the Alamo Bowl.
Dec 3 - 4:07 PM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew has reportedly accepted an invitation to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

We say reportedly, because there was a tweet that confirmed his selection that has now been deleted. We're guessing it's a timing thing. Minshew struggled against the Huskies in the Apple Cup last week, but outside of that, the former ECU senior has been outstanding; showing impressive touch and accuracy in the Air Raid offense. He also has shown the ability to escape in the pocket, although he won't remind anyone of Lamar Jackson in terms of the speed. Minshew has really seen his stock rise, and a strong performance in Mobile can only help that stock rise.
Nov 28 - 5:54 PM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew completed 26-of-35 passes for 152 yards and two interceptions in Friday's 28-15 loss to Washington.

On a snowy night in Pullman, the Cougars had a chance to make a statement to boost their slim Playoff hopes (and a chance for a Pac-12 Championship Game berth). Instead, Washington does as it tends to do in the Apple Cup and won with the game never seriously in doubt after halftime. Minshew has had a magnificent season to date, but it could have been a truly magical one. As is, WSU will await its bowl assignment after falling just short of bigger and better things.
Nov 24 - 12:58 AM

The Athletic's Dane Brugler believes it's "past due" time to take Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew seriously.

All Minshew has done since transferring to Washington State from East Carolina is put up some of the best -- if not the best -- numbers in the country, and he has the Cougars in contention for not just a Pac-12 title, but a possible playoff birth if they win out. "Minshew has exceptional field vision and processes the action very quickly, anticipating and striking when the passing window is there," writes Brugler. "He delivers catchable balls with touch and is comfortable throwing from a confined pocket." There will be concerns about his arm strength and the system he plays in, but the success of Jared Goff and Pat Mahomes after playing in those types of systems should address the latter. The former will likely hurt his stock, but Minshew has been too successful in 2018 to not consider a legitimate draft prospect.
Nov 21 - 3:29 PM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew is one of the three finalists for the Davey O'Brien Award.

Minshew is joined by Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa and Oklahoma's Kyler Murray for the award, which goes to the top quarterback in the country. Minshew is absolutely deserving; and is coming off a seven-touchdown, 473-yard performance against Arizona. If he performs like this against Washington -- or even close to that -- he's got a shot at winning the award.
Nov 19 - 5:31 PM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew completed 43-of-55 passes for 473 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions in Saturday's 69-28 win against Arizona.

The mustachioed graduate transfer was on his way to special things early on. He and the Cougars held a 55-14 lead at halftime, with Minshew piling up 311 yards and five touchdowns by the break. The Wazzu QB has been ridiculous, throwing for 319 or more yards in all 11 of his outings while tossing two or more touchdowns in 10 of his starts. He'll look to keep it rolling next weekend in the Apple Cup against rival Washington.
Nov 18 - 3:11 AM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew completed 35-of-58 passes for 335 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 31-7 win over Coloardo.

The Cougars' offense started out slow -- they were shut out in the first quarter -- before getting things revved up as the game progressed. Minshew connected on touchdown touches in the second and third quarters to help the effort and additionally managed a 10-yard touchdown run to open the fourth quarter. A sign of how prolific he has been this season, this was just the third time all season that the former ECU gunslinger has thrown for fewer than three touchdown passes. He is up to 29 touchdown passes through 10 games played. Wazzu will take on Arizona next weekend, with the Apple Cup to follow.
Nov 10 - 9:20 PM

Washington senior QB Gardner Minshew is one of the 16 semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien Award.

The O'Brien Award goes to the top quarterback in the country -- in the eyes of the O'Brien Award committee, anyway -- and Minshew certainly belongs in the picture. He's been as good as any quarterback statistically, and he's one of the key reasons why the Cougars have a chance -- albeit a slim one -- to make the College Football Playoff. The full list of nominees can be found in the link below.
Nov 7 - 3:13 PM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew completed 35-of-51 passes for 334 yards, a touchdown and an interception in Saturday's 19-13 win against Cal.

The mustachioed grad transfer has a cult following on the Palouse, as everyone is wearing fakes mustaches and holding out hope the Cougars can find their way into the college football playoff. The Golden Bears really made Minshew and the Cougs work for the win on Saturday, as this was the first time he failed to throw at least three touchdowns in a game against an FBS opponent this season. Still, he has at least 319 yards in each of his nine starts. Next up is a trip to play skidding Colorado on Saturday.
Nov 4 - 3:45 AM

Pro Football Focus notes that Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew had an adjusted completion percentage of 91.3 in Saturday's win over Stanford.

That was tops in the nation, besting Oklahoma's Kyler Murray (90.5) in the impressive effort. We've talked a lot about Minshew over the season, but we probably haven't talked enough. What he's done -- albeit in the happiest of pass-happy offenses -- has been spectacular, and he has given the Cougars a chance to win every game. If not for the ridiculous things Tua Tagovailoa was doing, he might be the Heisman favorite right now.
Oct 29 - 8:57 PM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew completed 40-of-50 passes for 438 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 41-38 win over Stanford.

The Cougars were in a huge letdown spot after their moment in the national spotlight last weekend, but rather than come out with a limp effort, Minshew and company took Stanford's best punches and returned them with haymakers. The closing moments of the contest, in particular, were thrilling. WSU went up 38-31 on Minshew's three-yard touchdown toss to Renard Bell with about 4:30 remaining in the fourth quarter, only for Stanford to tie the game up on a 25-yard J.J. Arcega-Whiteside touchdown with 1:30 left in the contest. More than enough time for Mr. Minshew, there, as he completed three passes on the subsequent drive to bring Washington State to within range for a 42-yard field goal by Blake Mazza. Stanford would get the ball back, but with almost no time to work. There would be no miracle for the home team. For the campaign as a whole, Minshew's now thrown for 3,138 yards with a 26/6 TD/INT ratio over the course of eight games played. The Cougars will take on Cal next weekend.
Oct 27 - 11:10 PM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew completed 39-of-51 passes for 323 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in Saturday's 34-20 win over Oregon.

The day in Pullman began in raucous fashion with College Gameday and it ended with Minshew playing up to the moment. Outside of a somewhat wobbly third quarter, he and his Cougar teammates were locked in throughout. He capped the game off with a 22-yard touchdown pass down the middle to Dezmon Patmon with just under four minutes remaining to put Wazzu up by 14 points, essentially icing any chance of a comeback barring strange happening. Minshew has now thrown at least three touchdown passes in every game this season save for one. The Cougars will look to improve to 7-1 on the campaign when they play Stanford next weekend.
Oct 20 - 11:59 PM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew completed 30-of-40 passes for 430 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in Saturday's 56-37 win at Oregon State.

Minshew threw for 2,140 yards, 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2017 as the starter for East Carolina in four starts and parts of 10 games. The graduate transfer is already up to 2,422 yards with 19 TDs and just four INTs in six starts while also posting two rushing scores. He has thrown for at least 319 yards in all six of his starts this season. He'll look to keep it going in two weeks against Oregon.
Oct 7 - 2:38 AM

Washington State senior QB Gardner Minshew completed 31-of-56 passes for 445 yards with three scores and an interception and ran for a touchdown in a 28-24 victory on Saturday over Utah.

Despite this big yardage total, this was actually a defensive struggle for much of the game, particularly in the second half where only 10 points were scored. Minshew had serious accuracy issues for much of the game, but he made enough big plays; particularly a 89-yard strike to Easop Winston that ended up being the game-winning score. At least for right now, this is clearly Minshew's team. The Cougars take on Oregon State next Saturday.
