Iowa State redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) has returned to full health.
Kempt received a waiver for a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA over the offseason, but an early September knee injury kept him sidelined for almost two months, which ultimately led to the ascension of true freshman Brock Purdy. Even with Kempt healthy, now, Purdy will remain starter. The elder signal-caller will back up the youngster for the rest of the campaign. Fri, Nov 2, 2018 05:52:00 PM

Date:

Iowa State redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) probably won't play in Saturday's game against Texas Tech.

This report from the Des Moines Register's Randy Peterson, who adds that Kempt will be in uniform today for the first time since early September. By the time he's able to return, freshman sensation Brock Purdy may have long since run away with the undisputed starting job (if he hasn't already).

Iowa State HC Matt Campbell said that the status of redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) has not yet been determined for Saturday's game against Texas Tech.

Kempt has not played since the second game of the campaign. Even if he is available this weekend, we would be surprised if freshman Brock Purdy does not receive the start versus the Red Raiders. Purdy has thrown for 572 yards (75-percent completions) with a 7/2 TD/INT ratio while starting the last two games, including a mammoth home upset of WVU prior to the Cyclones' bye week.

Iowa State redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) is back on the depth chart for Saturday's game against Texas Tech.

Kempt hasn't played since Iowa State fell to Iowa in Week 2 while dealing with the knee injury. Brock Purdy is still listed as the starter, however, with Kempt listed as one of the backups for the contest against the Red Raiders. Unless Purdy struggles -- or there's an unforeseen development -- it's unlikely that the redshirt senior regains his starting job in 2018.

Iowa State redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) is not available for Saturday's game against West Virginia.

Kempt hasn't played since Iowa State's Week 2 loss at Iowa, and it was considered to be a long shot that he would be able to return against West Virginia. Freshman Brock Purdy was named the starter at the beginning of the week, with Zeb Noland serving as his backup.

Iowa State redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) is doubtful for Saturday's game against West Virginia.

A surprise return by Kempt is the only thing that would potentially keep freshman Brock Purdy from drawing the start against the Mountaineers. Purdy came on in relief of Zeb Noland -- and ripped it up for five touchdowns -- in Saturday's win over Oklahoma State. We have not seen Kempt take the field since injuring his knee against Iowa in Week 2.

Iowa State redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against Oklahoma State.

Kempt (6'5/224) is no longer wearing a brace on his knee and HC Matt Campbell passed along that he was expected to see some work in practice this week, but he's still a ways from game action. Zeb Noland has started each of the past three contests in his place and will be taking the opening snaps versus the Cowboys on Saturday. At this juncture, Noland is looking likely to start in Week 7, against West Virginia, as well. Iowa State will hit its bye week after that. Kempt could potentially be ready for the Cyclones' showdown with Texas Tech on Oct. 27 coming out of the bye.

Iowa State HC Matt Campbell said that redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) remains several weeks away from a return.

While Campbell is happy with the progress that Kempt has made thus far since injuring his knee against Iowa in the second week of the campaign, but the initial hope here was that the redshirt senior would be able to return before the end of September. That won't be happening barring a rapid turnaround, now, it would appear. So long as Kempt remains sidelined, Zeb Noland will continue to work as starter for the Cyclones. Iowa State plays TCU this coming weekend.

Iowa State HC Matt Campbell told reporters that redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt will return "sooner than later."

Well, that's specific. Kempt has not played in the last two games, and the original diagnosis was 1-2 weeks with the knee injury. He's missed the last two games, but it sounds like there's a chance he could miss at least one more -- if not more. If Kempt can't go on Saturday against TCU, Zeb Noland will again be the starter.

Iowa State redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) will not play Saturday against Akron.

He's in street clothes ahead of kickoff. Zeb Noland will draw another start.

Iowa State HC Matt Campbell said following Saturday's loss to Oklahoma that he expects redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt to be sidelined for another 1-2 weeks.

Kempt, who injured his knee during the second half of a Sept. 8 loss at Iowa, was replaced in the starting lineup by sophomore Zeb Noland. Noland performed well in the 37-27 loss to Oklahoma, completing 26-of-36 passes for 360 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Iowa State's next two games are against Akron (Sept. 22) and TCU (Sept. 29).

Iowa State redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) doesn't appear to be suiting up for Saturday's game against Oklahoma.

He didn't warm-up either, so you can all but officially rule him out. Kempt suffered a knee injury in last week's game against Iowa. Consider him week-to-week for now.

Iowa State redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) did not come out with the other quarterbacks for pregame warmups in advance of Saturday's game against Oklahoma.

In the postgame of Saturday's loss to Iowa, it appeared almost assured that the injury would force Kempt to miss this game. But during the week, something changed, and it appeared as though he might recover in time. A day-to-day timeline was given. It appears that we're back to where we started. Odds are that Zeb Noland starts against the Sooners.

It remains unclear whether Iowa State redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) will be able to play against Oklahoma on Saturday.

Kempt (6'5/224) was fitted for a brace earlier in the week. He's been working his way back from a knee injury he sustained versus Iowa last Saturday. Cyclones HC Matt Campbell has described the redshirt senior's issue as one of "day-to-day" concern, but the team has yet to announce one way or another on Kempt's starting status for Saturday. Unless news breaks over the transom later on Friday, we may have to wait until gameday itself for this story to reach its conclusion. Zeb Noland would start in Kempt's place if he's physically unable to give it a go against the Sooners.

Iowa State WR coach Bryan Gasser said that redshirt senior QB Kyle Kempt (knee) is "moving and trending in the right direction."

Kempt (6'5/224) injured his knee during the fourth quarter of Saturday's loss to the rival Hawkeyes. Earlier this week, Cyclones HC Matt Campbell referred to the injury as "look[ing] more day-to-day than it does long term." Looks like the redshirt senior signal-caller might have dodged significant injury. Oklahoma looms on the schedule for the coming weekend. Should Kempt be held out of that contest, starting honors would fall to Zeb Noland. We'll keep tabs on this one in the leadup to kickoff.
