Iowa junior S Amani Hooker announced Saturday that he will forego his final season of eligibility and enter the 2019 NFL Draft.
Hooker (6'0/210), who won the Big Ten's Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year award this season, accounted for 65 total tackles (3.5 for loss), one sack, four interceptions and seven pass breakups. His versatility, which allowed the Big Ten's best defensive back to be used as an outside linebacker or slot corner depending upon the situation, is viewed as one of Hooker's strengths as he takes his talents to the NFL. Iowa junior S Amani Hooker was named winner of the Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year award.

Hooker (6'0/209) took away the Big Ten honor on the strength of 59 tackles (3.5 for loss), a sack, four interceptions and seven passes defended. His work is made all the more impressive by the fact that Iowa's secondary was expected to sag off due to draft departures and the like. Instead, they finished the year with S&P+'s No. 31 pass defense in the country for the 2018 season.

Iowa junior S Amani Hooker had one interception and didn't allow a single completion on his 28 coverage snaps according to Pro Football Focus.

Hooker also had two run stops against Northern Illinois. The performance was good enough for Hooker (6'0/209) to land on the weekly Defensive Team of the Week. During spring practice, Bobby La Gesse of the Land of 10 pointed to Hooker as a standout performer, so this could be the beginning of a breakout year. The Hawkeyes play Iowa State in what will be the Cyclones season opener. Hooker will need to stop running back David Montgomery in that one.

Land of 10's Bobby La Gesse pointed to Iowa junior S Amani Hooker as a standout performer in spring practice.

"He was the best playmaker on the field (during the spring game), regardless of position," La Gesse writes of the 6-foot, 209-pound Hooker. The analyst additionally passes along that players have been talking up the junior's work for the spring as a whole -- he was not just a one-exhibition wonder -- and believes that he could potentially be in for a star turn this coming season if he can maintain his health. Injury limited him to just eight games played a year ago, but in that truncated space, he registered 56 tackles and two interceptions.
