Mark Brown completed International Final Qualifying-Australia at Kingston Heath Golf Club in Melbourne in 10-under-par 72-62=134, earning medalist honors and a trip to the Open Championship in July.
After exchanging three birdies with three bogeys in his opening round, the Kiwi went bogey-free in the nightcap with an eagle and eight birdies to establish the course record. He was one stroke lower than Australian Steve Jeffress, who shot 9-under 68-67=135 at the 36-hole qualifier. Jeffress circled six birdies against two bogeys in his opener before going bogey-free with five birdies in his second round. Fellow Aussie, Stephen Dartnall, holed 10 birdies to offset just two bogeys en route to third-place honors at 8-under 67-69=136, thus securing the final berth of the three up at stake at the site. Brown is the only of the trio that has competed in an Open, missing the cut at Turnberry in 2009. Notables that failed to qualify include: 137--Scott Laycock; Peter O'Malley ... 138--David McKenzie ... 144--Paul Gow ... 146--Paul Sheehan. Tue, Jan 29, 2013 10:51:00 PM

Mark Brown finished atop the Australasian Order of Merit, securing a berth in the 2009 British Open.

Brown banked nearly 96 percent of his earnings after winning the Johnnie Walker Classic on March 2. Alone, that paycheck would have breezed to 1st place on the Order of Merit. The spoils include a tee time at the British Open, a first for the Kiwi, but he failed to qualify for the U.S. Open because he's currently 107th in the World Ranking. (The Top 2 on the Order of Merit are awarded spots at the U.S. Open provided that they rank inside the Top 75 at the conclusion of the season.)
