Sandy Lyle was the first British player to win the Masters in 1988 and, now aged 59, he makes another visit to the scene of that groundbreaking win.
The Hall of Famer played his first Masters in 1980, finishing 48th and this will be his 36th time around Augusta National. One of his better efforts actually came in his 50s when he posted T20 in 2009. The Scotsman also rolled back the years when making the cut in both 2013 (T54) and 2014 (T44) but perhaps his days of playing all four rounds are over after 74-76 in 2015 and 76-81 last year led to missed cuts. He's played three Champions Tour events this year but finished T43, T70 and T75 so it's hard to see how this week is anything more than an enjoyable time catching up with fellow past champions. Sandy Lyle, the winner of the 1988 green jacket, returns to Augusta National, but is unlikely to stir the memories.

The English-born Scotsman had his first glimpse of Masters magic in 1986 when he was paired with Jack Nicklaus during the great man’s superb charge to victory. Two years later Lyle drew on those memories to convert victory of his own. But he missed his next three cuts at Augusta National and has never recovered: a T20 in 2009 is his best effort since he claimed that green jacket. Remarkably in 34 trips his only top ten finish was the year he won. Two starts on the Champions Tour don’t indicate a shock is on the cards: they were back in February and he finished outside the top 50 both times.

Despite his advancing years, Sandy Lyle continues to make the weekend at Augusta National Golf Club and will give it another go this year.

The Scot, who won the green jacket in 1988, can still get it out there off the tee and perhaps that's why he remains competitive at the Masters. Lyle, now 57, has made his last two Masters cuts and five of the last seven in all even though he tends to tire on the weekend. Last year he shot 76-73 over the final 36 holes to finish T44 while in 2013 he posted an 81 on Saturday. Still, don't rule him out going all four rounds again as he puts his veteran smarts to good use.

Sandy Lyle brings his game back to Augusta National for the 33rd time at this week's Masters.

The former Masters champion has played 30 rounds at Augusta National over the past 10 years, with a scoring average of 75.67 during that stretch. Lyle made the cut last year before carding a 9-over-par 81 on Saturday, ending in a T54 finish. His recent and overall track record at the Masters both suggest he is 50-50 to make the cut this week.

Sandy Lyle makes his annual pilgrimage to Augusta National for this week’s Masters.

Lyle captured the green jacket in 1988 in what remains his only top 10 in 31 starts at the event. He last made the cut here in 2009 when he tied for 20th. His fantasy value this week is limited at best.

Sandy Lyle withdrew on Thursday from the British Open.

Lyle was 11-over-par after 10 holes at the time of his withdrawal. He also withdrew in from the 1991 Open under similar circumstances.
