Billy Mayfair made a big first-round splash at the Puerto Rico Open, signing for a 5-under-par 31-36=67 while playing Coco Beach Golf and Country Club.
The 49-year-old looked to be hunting down the course record (63) early on in his round. He pieced together a four-hole birdie train, beginning at the par-5 second hole. He dropped a shot at the par-4 seventh hole but immediately bounced back with back-to-back birdies to make the turn at 5-under 31. Mayfair cruised home on the back nine with two more circles, offset by a pair of bogeys. The five-time PGA TOUR winner has never finished better than T55 at this event in three tries, so gamers should not get their hopes up in thinking this will hold. Thu, Mar 24, 2016 11:42:00 AM

Billy Mayfair tees it up in the fourth event of a seven-event fall schedule on the PGA TOUR and cracks the field at this week's Sanderson Farms Championship via Past Champion status.

Events four and five are both this week, with the Sanderson Farms playing opposite the WGC-HSBC Champions. With the majority of the world's best playing in China, many of the TOUR's young talent as well as journeymen get their shot in Mississippi. 13 in the field are outside the top 1000 in the Official World Golf Ranking, including Mayfair, clocking in at No. 1192. In last year's SFC inaugural at CC of Jackson, Mayfair missed the cut by one after T9 in 2013 (Annandale GC), highlighted by a bogey-free 10-under 62 in round two which featured two eagle-3s and six birdies. This is the 48-year-old's first TOUR action since T37 at the opposite-field Barracuda Championship in early August.

Billy Mayfair contests this week's inaugural Barbasol Championship via Past Champion status.

Mayfair ranks 241st in the FedExCup standings entering the week, having made just four starts on the PGA TOUR season, missing the cut in three. His only cash was T55 at the opposite-field Puerto Rico Open in March and has been idle since a MC at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in June. The 48-year-old has added four events in 2015 on the Tour going 2-for-4 with a season-best T26 at the Rex Hospital Open at the end of May.

Billy Mayfair has replaced Daniel Chopra in the field at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

It was only a matter of time before Chopra was officially out. He's competing in the Thailand Open instead this week. Mayfair started the week as eighth alternate. This will be just his fourth start on the PGA TOUR this season. His only payday was a T55 in Puerto Rico. The 48-year-old tied for 26th at the Tour's Rex Hospital Open nine days ago. He also placed T27 at TPC Southwind in his last start in 2013, but his effectiveness as a fantasy investment will likely wait until he qualifies for the Champions Tour on Aug. 6, 2016.

Billy Mayfair settled for a 1-over-par 35-38=73 in his second round of the Puerto Rico Open.

Winds at Trump International Golf Club-Puerto Rico are eating the field alive. They've been sustained at 20 mph all day, so even the best ball-strikers are having trouble scoring. Mayfair piped 10 (of 14) fariways and hit 13 greens in regulation today, but managed only one birdie (at the par-5 second hole). He connected bogeys coming in to thwart a red number. However, at 2-under 142, he's only one stroke adrift of the 36-hole clubhouse co-leaders.

Billy Mayfair lapped Trump International Golf Club-Puerto Rico in 2-under-par 34-35=69 in today's opening round of the Puerto Rico Open.

He split 12 (of 14) fairways and hit 15 greens in regulation. That ball-striking yielded six birdies against three bogeys before he landed just one stroke off the clubhouse lead. The 48-year-old is 0-for-2 this season even though today's red number is his fifth in six rounds.

Billy Mayfair has gained entry into this week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

The 48-year-old was the fifth alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He was the last of the alternates to slide in following six withdrawals. Mayfair first played Pebble Beach in 1989, but didn't return until 2013. So, this will mark just his third appearance in the tournament. In his only other start this season, he missed the cut at the Sanderson Farms.

Billy Mayfair has been added to the published field of this week's Sanderson Farms Championship.

Mayfair was the first alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry when Brice Garnett withdrew. Mayfair, 48, is entering his second consecutive season with no better than Past Champion status. He tied for ninth at the last edition of the SFC in 2013, but that was at Annandale Golf Club where the tournament used to be contested. This week's host is the Country Club of Jackson.

Billy Mayfair has been added to the published field of this week's Barracuda Championship.

Mayfair was the second alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He slid in easily when 11 were removed today. The five-time PGA TOUR winner is 1-for-3 this season (T75, Travelers). He's also cashed in six of 13 starts on the Tour, but sits 141st on its money list. Mayfair will turn 48 years of age on Aug. 6, so he can almost hear the Champions Tour calling.

Billy Mayfair has been added to the published field of this week's John Deere Classic.

Mayfair was the 12th alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He was the second of two to gain entry with withdrawals this afternoon. If he doesn't remain committed to his spot at the Tour's Utah Championship, he'll be making his 19th appearance at the Deere.

Billy Mayfair returns to the Travelers Championship for the 23rd time later this week.

While Mayfair has seen TPC River Highlands plenty of times over the years, he has just a pair of top-10 finishes in this event and tied for 81st a year ago. While he's made four of nine cuts on the Tour in 2014, he's missed his only attempt on the PGA TOUR. At this point, he plays with only Past Champion status.

Billy Mayfair landed a sponsor exemption into this week's Farmers Insurance Open.

Mayfair has loyally teed it up here 23 times since 1989, so consider this a reward for his past patronage. His success has been limited to 11 paydays and just one top 10, which was a T10 back in 2004. This is his first start of the 2013-14 PGA TOUR season, as he only owns Past Champion status.

Billy Mayfair has been added to the published field of this week's RBC Canadian Open.

Mayfair tied for ninth place at Annandale on Sunday to earn a top-10 exemption into the field at Glen Abbey this week. There's some synergy as it relates to his berth. His most recent of 15 runner-up finishes on the PGA TOUR occurred on the track in 2008. He'll arrive ranked 197th in FedExCup points.

Billy Mayfair spun a blemish-free 4-under-par 33-35=68 in the final round of the Sanderson Farms Championship to end his week at 15-under 273.

Mayfair was without a top 25 on his season entering his trip to Mississippi, so while he is still far from inside the top 125 in the FedExCup standings, at least he has a top 10 in tow. Today's round featured two birdies and an eagle sprinkled among 15 pars. Considering he missed eight GIR, his scrambling propped him up. He is not currently in the field for the RBC Canadian Open, but has that option by virtue of his top 10.
Sun, Jul 21, 2013 03:08:00 PM

Billy Mayfair tore up Annandale Golf Club in his second round of the Sanderson Farms Championship for a bogey-free, 10-under-par 31-31=62.

Friday night's suspension had nothing on the soon-to-be 47-year-old (Aug. 6). He started on the back side of Annandale and completed half his round with five birdies. Upon returning this morning, he promptly birdied the par-4 first hole before adding eagle-3s at Nos. 5 and 7. He posted 10-under 134 at the midpoint to sit four strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead. This is his lowest round on the PGA TOUR since a career-best 61 in the finale of the now-defunct Buick Open in 2001.
