Anton Haig is 11-under-par 65-68=133 through two rounds of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, five strokes adrift of the 36-hole lead.
Haig opened at Kingsbarns before today's loop around St. Andrews. He will grapple with Carnoustie on Saturday before the cut falls. His performance thus far this week is impressive, but that he's competing at all deserves attention. The 26-year-old South African hasn't pegged it on the European Tour on European soil since this event in 2010. In fact, he told an English magazine late last year that he was retiring due to bone spurs and a bulging disc in his cervical vertebrae. However, he's returning to his career as a touring pro and plans on chasing his 2013 card at Q School. "Until then, just playing on the MENA Tour the next couple weeks up in Dubai there and just playing, competing really, just getting tournament practise under my belt again," he said. "Hopefully here things change for me." Fri, Oct 5, 2012 12:54:00 PM

England's Golf Monthly reported on Nov. 24 that Anton Haig has chosen to retire as a touring professional.

The one-time European Tour winner (2007 Johnnie Walker Classic) has a combination of bone spurs and a bulging disc in his cervical vertebrae that led to this decision. He had surgery to reduce the pain but was clearly compelled to move on instead, even at the youthful age of 25. "I enjoyed my golfing career as I was able to travel the world extensively, having made many wonderful friends in all the great countries I was privileged to visit," he said. "I am very grateful to SAGA, the European and Asian Tours and particularly Chubby Chandler of ISM and Johan Rupert and the Sunshine Tour for their extraordinary support and guidance." I love the game and therefore will not be leaving the golfing fraternity as I will be involving myself in giving back what this great game has given to me!" The South African's last start was the Telkom PGA Championship in February; he placed T36. He's current 1,023rd in the world ranking.

20-year-old South African sensation Anton Haig will be in the field for this week's WGC - CA Championship on the Blue course at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa.

Haig, who recently won the Johnnie Walker Classic on the European Tour, will be making his PGA Tour debut along with his mentor and childhood idol Ernie Els. Haig might be a great long shot selection if he has been entered as an eligible player in your fantasy game.
