Matt Bettencourt has been added to the published field of this week's Valero Texas Open.
He was the first alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon, so it was just a matter of time before a spot opened. He gained entry due to a wave of withdrawals this morning. Bettencourt is just 2-for-4 on the season with no top 65s. He's cashed once in three appearances at TPC San Antonio (T46, 2013). Mar 24 - 11:06 AM

Matt Bettencourt has been added to the published field of this week's Farmers Insurance Open.

Bettencourt was the second alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry due to four withdrawals today. In his only start thus far in 2013-14 (due to sitting near the bottom of the reshuffle), the Web.com Tour Finals grad missed the cut at Waialae. He's 1-for-4 at Torrey Pines, but that lone payday occurred in his first appearance in 2009, and that was a mere T63.

Matt Bettencourt improved his PGA TOUR status for 2013-14 by way of the 2013 Web.com Tour, and will try and find starts in the early part of 2014.

Bettencourt was one of seven Web.com Tour grads that didn't find his way into a field for an event before the first reshuffle, following Mayakoba, due in part to the strength of the fields in the Fall Series. He shot himself in the foot during the four-tournament Web.com Tour Finals, cashing just once for a weak tally of $2,650 and falling towards the bottom of the first reshuffle. Making the most of any starts he gets will be key, as he must now fight his way out of a hole early in the season. Given his feast-or-famine nature over the years, he's a risk to gamers at best.

Matt Bettencourt signed for an even-par 38-34=72 following his opening round of the Chiquita Classic.

Bettencourt was in our crosshairs today because he called it quits during his second round of last week's Hotel Fitness Championship due to a back injury. At River Run Country Club today, he turned in a bit of a rare feat on the par 5s, recording one eagle, one birdie, one par and one bogey on the set. He squared bogeys on a pair of par 4s as well to prevent the red number. Overall, he hit only half of his fairways and greens in regulation, and finished five strokes adrift of the overnight co-leaders.

Matt Bettencourt withdrew during his second round of the Hotel Fitness Championship due to a back injury.

After opening with a 2-under-par 37-33=70 at Sycamore Hills Golf Club, he played seven holes of his second round in 6-over before walking off. This could be a costly malady for the one-time PGA TOUR winner. He earned his 2013-14 card by finishing 16th on the Web.com Tour money list, but he's playing for position in the opening reshuffle. If he's able, he'll try again at this week's Chiquita Classic.

Matt Bettencourt fired a 6-under-par 32-33=65 in the third round of the Cox Classic and shared the lead with Bronson La'Cassie at 17-under 196.

Bettencourt started his round slowly, with a bogey on the par-4 second. That would be it for the blemishes, as he would tack on seven birdies over his final 15 holes. He's limited his mistakes to just two bogeys over 54 holes this week, ranked second with 45 GIR in 54 holes. Currently 96th on the Web.com Tour money list, he would secure his PGA TOUR card for 2013-14 with a win tomorrow.

The second round of the Sanderson Farms Championship was suspended by inclement weather at 3:59 p.m. CT. UPDATE: Play is scheduled to resume at 6:10 p.m.

Here we go again. Ignoring a fog delay of 30 minutes this morning, luck ran out at Annandale Golf Club as afternoon boomers are forming along a line running northeast-to southwest. These storms are moving in a west-northwesterly direction and there's no telling when the golfers will be able to resume play. Matt Bettencourt is done for the week, however, as he completed 36 holes in 2-over-par 71-75=146, well below the projected cut line. He's shown some life in limited action this season, but hasn't come anywhere near putting even three rounds together, much less four.

Matt Bettencourt crafted a bogey-free, 6-under-par 34-31=66 in his opening round of the John Deere Classic to earn a share of the early clubhouse lead.

He was the last man in the field on Wednesday (barring no more withdrawals today) and responded with some inspired golf this morning. Bettencourt went 6-for-16 in birdie opportunities. Three of his conversions dropped in from outside 11 feet, the longest measuring 25'9" at the par-4 sixth hole. He opened with a 65 at TPC Deere Run in 2009 only to fade in the finale with a 75 and settle for a T39.

Matt Bettencourt has been added to the published field of this week's John Deere Classic.

Bettencourt was the sixth alternate at the start of the week. He gained entry when Neal Lancaster withdrew today. Bettencourt is 4-for-6 on the season with one top 25. He ranks 185th in FedExCup points. He's also cashed in three of his four trips to TPC Deere Run but has yet to crack a top 35.

Matt Bettencourt sits 3-over-par 72-71=143 at the midpoint of the U.S. Open.

He was a sudden scratch during his opening round of last week's St. Jude due to an illness. That explains why he was in our crosshairs this week, but he's only four strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead. Bettencourt has hit 24 greens in regulation and circled only two birdies but he's done a yeoman's job of avoiding big numbers, incurring only five bogeys and nothing worse. The 36-hole cut at the U.S. Open is low 60 and ties.

Matt Bettencourt withdrew during his opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic due to an illness.

He completed 12 holes in 6-over-par with two birdies, four bogeys and two doubles before walking off. The timing is costly as this was just his fifth start due to Past Champion status. However, he sectional qualified for next week's U.S. Open, so he'll have several days to recover in advance of the season's second major.

Matt Bettencourt has been added to the published field of this week's HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Bettencourt was the second alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon, but he gained entry on a sponsor exemption when Luke Guthrie withdrew. Bettencourt is 2-for-3 this season on the PGA TOUR and finished T18 at the 54-hole Stadion Classic at UGA on the Web.com Tour two weeks ago. He didn't cash in any of his first four trips to the Nelson (2009-2012) and hasn't broken 74 in eight rounds.

Overnight co-leader Matt Bettencourt chased his opening 67 with a 1-over-par 35-38=73 in his second round, reaching the midpoint in 4-under 140.

He signed his card with possession of the 36-hole clubhouse lead but it won't stick. He hit 12 greens again today and managed four birdies, including rolls from 17'9" at 11 and 11'11" at 1, but he erased them with five bogeys, four of which on his last six holes. Among the leakage was a three-putt from 17'5" at the par-4 fifth hole.

Matt Bettencourt spun a 5-under-par 34-33=67 in his opening round of the Valero Texas Open, good for outright possession of the clubhouse lead.

Making just his third start of the season due to Past Champion status, Bettencourt pounced early and often at TPC San Antonio today. He hit 12 greens in regulation and holed six birdies, none of which on the set of four par 5s. His longest conversions measured 21'4" at 12 and 10'2" at 17. At the time he signed his card, he held a one-stroke lead as the final groups of the afternoon wave made the turn.

Matt Bettencourt has been added to the published field of this week's Valero Texas Open.

Bettencourt was the seventh alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry due to several withdrawals today. Now saddled with Past Champions status, the soon-to-be 38-year-old -- his birthday is April 12 -- is 1-for-2 on the season with a T24 in Puerto Rico. He failed to cash in both of his previous starts at TPC San Antonio (2010, 2012). Only a victory will allow him to rise in status, but he could still serve as a sneaky option in weekly leagues given his propensity to get hot. It's just that it hasn't happened in recent memory.
