Matt Bettencourt twirled a 5-under-par 34-32=66 during round one of the Barbasol Championship, currently one off the pace set by Ángel Cabrera.
Gaining late entry into the field thanks to a pre-tournament WD by Arjun Atwal, Bettencourt took full advantage of the opportunity. Those chances are becoming more and more rare as he's making just his fourth start of the season (0-for-3) and just 12th over the past two campaigns. Today, it was all about the flat stick as he rolled in six putts from outside eight feet, two of them coming from outside of 20 feet. The 2010 Reno-Tahoe Open champion has thrown his name into the mix after day one, but he'll need to maintain this level of short-game play if he wants to stick around near the top all week. At today's open qualifier for the Wyndham Championship, Matt Bettencourt toured Bermuda Run Country Club's East Course in Advance, North Carolina, in 6-under-par 31-34=65, good for third place and a berth into the tournament proper.

Since the Wyndham is the last tournament of the regular season, this was the last four-spotter until 2015-16. Bettencourt traded seven birdies with one bogey en route to securing his eighth start on the PGA TOUR this season. The 40-year-old cashed four times but sits outside the top 220 in both FedExCup points and earnings. Brad Miller was the medalist today. He went out in the first threesome off the first tee and converted eight birdies en route to a bogey-free, 8-under 30-33=63. With eight birdies against one bogey, Dalton Ward took runner-up honors at 7-under 32-32=64. Both he and Miller will be making their TOUR debuts this week. The final tee time at Sedgefield went to Ted Brown, who shot 5-under 32-34=66, and then survived a four-way playoff. The 36-year-old from Canada is 182nd on the Tour money list with just three paydays in 17 starts. The field at the Wyndham Championship is now complete at 156.

Matt Bettencourt hoisted the 2010 Barracuda Championship trophy and returns this week for another walk around Montrêux Golf and Country Club.

Bettencourt took home the turkey before the tournament made the switch to Modified Stableford scoring. He finished his victory week at 11-under 277, one clear of Bob Heintz. Just 3-for-6 on the season, gamers can safely overlook Bettencourt this week in Reno.

Matt Bettencourt has been added to the published field of this week's John Deere Classic.

He started the week as the eighth alternate, and then gained entry following two withdrawals in the field proper and among the alternates. Bettencourt has competed in each of the last six editions of the JDC. He's still chasing his first top 35, but he cashed four times. The 40-year-old hasn't finished inside the top 170 in the FedExCup standings since 2011.

Matt Bettencourt has been added to the published field of this week's FedEx St. Jude Classic.

He was the second alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon, and then gained entry following two withdrawals reported this morning. Bettencourt has competed in each of the last five SJCs, but he's yet to make a cut and break par. In fact, he's withdrawn twice and carded a pair of 80s. This will be just his fourth start on the PGA TOUR this season. He's 225th in the FedExCup standings. Have fun, duffer leaguers.

Matt Bettencourt will make his second start of the season at this week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Bettencourt will attempt to earn his first cut made of the 2014-15 campaign after striking out with two over-par rounds at the Sanderson Farms Championship. His track record at Pebble Beach isn't much better, as he's just 2-for-6 in his career. Gamers should look elsewhere this week when trying to scavenge value plays this week.

Matt Bettencourt snared a sponsor exemption into this week's Sanderson Farms Open.

Playing with only Past Champion status, Bettencourt's opportunities are expected to be few and far between this year. Putting it into perspective, he is scheduled to compete in the Second Stage of the Tour Q School later in November. He made just four of 14 cuts on the PGA TOUR last season, with a T20 in the RBC Canadian Open serving as the only notable finish. Needless to say, a big week at the Country Club of Jackson this week could set the table for future playing opportunities.

Matt Bettencourt enters this week's Wyndham Championship ranked 210th in the FedExCup standings.

Bettencourt is on the outside looking in, and will need a miracle finish to find a spot in the Playoffs. He's earned 57 total FEC points on the season and sits 20 shy of the current 200th golfer in the standings. That number will likely increase by week's end, so Bettencourt has a tall task ahead of him if he wants to earn exemption into the Tour Finals. He sports a 1-for-3 record at Sedgefield Country Club.

Matt Bettencourt has been added to the published field of this week's Greenbrier Classic.

He was the second alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon, but gained entry due to three withdrawals this morning. The PGA TOUR winner has been trending on our main page for several weeks, but there's no relevant reason as to why. He's cashed just twice in nine starts this season and rolls into White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, having missed his last five cuts. Bettencourt is also 0-for-3 on the Tour in 2014.

Matt Bettencourt is set for his eighth start of the 2013-14 PGA TOUR season at this week's FedEx St. Jude Classic.

It's been a terrible year, making just two cuts and doing no better than a T66 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Given his history at TPC Southwind, this doesn't set up as a spot for a big rebound. In the five rounds he's played here, he's failed to break 80 twice.

Matt Bettencourt readies for TPC Louisiana at this week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

The Tour Finals grad needs to make the most of every start his gets as he currently sits in the bottom-half of the reshuffle. With three missed cuts in five tournaments and only 5.5 FedExCup points to his name this year, there are better options for gamers this week.

Matt Bettencourt has been added to the published field of this week's Valero Texas Open.

He was the first alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon, so it was just a matter of time before a spot opened. He gained entry due to a wave of withdrawals this morning. Bettencourt is just 2-for-4 on the season with no top 65s. He's cashed once in three appearances at TPC San Antonio (T46, 2013).

Matt Bettencourt has been added to the published field of this week's Farmers Insurance Open.

Bettencourt was the second alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry due to four withdrawals today. In his only start thus far in 2013-14 (due to sitting near the bottom of the reshuffle), the Tour Finals grad missed the cut at Waialae. He's 1-for-4 at Torrey Pines, but that lone payday occurred in his first appearance in 2009, and that was a mere T63.

Matt Bettencourt improved his PGA TOUR status for 2013-14 by way of the 2013 Tour, and will try and find starts in the early part of 2014.

Bettencourt was one of seven Tour grads that didn't find his way into a field for an event before the first reshuffle, following Mayakoba, due in part to the strength of the fields in the Fall Series. He shot himself in the foot during the four-tournament Tour Finals, cashing just once for a weak tally of $2,650 and falling towards the bottom of the first reshuffle. Making the most of any starts he gets will be key, as he must now fight his way out of a hole early in the season. Given his feast-or-famine nature over the years, he's a risk to gamers at best.

Matt Bettencourt signed for an even-par 38-34=72 following his opening round of the Chiquita Classic.

Bettencourt was in our crosshairs today because he called it quits during his second round of last week's Hotel Fitness Championship due to a back injury. At River Run Country Club today, he turned in a bit of a rare feat on the par 5s, recording one eagle, one birdie, one par and one bogey on the set. He squared bogeys on a pair of par 4s as well to prevent the red number. Overall, he hit only half of his fairways and greens in regulation, and finished five strokes adrift of the overnight co-leaders.
