Sutherland was coasting to a payday until he made the turn at Spyglass Hill today. He was 1-over on the round before climbing back to even with a birdie at the 10th hole. Then the wheels fell off. After a bogey-6 at 11, he swallowed a 7 on the par-3 12th. He'd muster only five pars and a closing bogey coming in to fall short. This marks the first time in his career that he's begun his season with two missed cuts. He'll try to end the skid at next week's Northern Trust Open. On the bright side, he holed three birdies, including a conversion from 17'6" at 6. He also rolled in a par save from 13'3" at 13.

Jan 18 - 10:50 PM

Kevin Sutherland is likely to return to competition at next week's Farmers Insurance Open or the Waste Management Phoenix Open in two weeks.

The 48-year-old veteran was all set to play this week's Humana Challenge but tweaked his lower back putting on gym shorts. He's been sidelined since February as he continued to recover from a combined neck and back injury sustained during a fall in Texas in 2011. With that area of his body feeling good again, we should expect to see him quite a bit this year. "One of my goals is to play 15 events, healthy and prepared, this year," said Sutherland, who has 11 starts on Major Medical Extension to earn $355,587 and retain status. "I haven't been able to do that in a year and a half. I've been playing without any sort of issues. I'm 100 percent – unless I do too much. Not the same 100 percent I was when I was 25, but relative."
Jan 16 - 9:09 AM

Kevin Sutherland's status on the PGA TOUR via a Major Medical will extend into 2013.

The one-time TOUR champ went 2-for-4 early in the year before sitting out the rest of the season after missing the cut at Pebble Beach. It was speculated that he'd return after the Masters, but it didn't materialize. Whenever he comes back, he'll have 11 starts to bank $355,587 and retain status. (He's also $99,364 short of securing conditional status as a safety net.) Sutherland will turn 49 years of age in July.

It's been about one year now since his fluke fall that resulted in his myriad of neck injuries. He still has 11 starts on a Major Medical Extension to earn $355,587 and retain status.
