Kevin Sutherland authored a 13-under-par 28-31=59 in his second round of the Dick's Sporting Good Open on the Champions Tour to become the first to break 60 in the 35-year history of the circuit.
And he did so with a bogey at the par-4 18th hole to conclude his round. Sutherland turned 50 on the Fourth of July, so this week's stop in Endicott, New York, is just his third with the 50-and-older crowd. As the splits above indicate, he tore up the par-37 front nine at En-Joie Golf Club, recording seven birdies and an eagle. His only par occurred on the par-4 ninth. Sutherland got back to work immediately after the turn, with birdies at 10 and 11. After three more pars, he birdied 15, 16 and 17 to put 58 if not 57 into play. At 14-under 130 through 36 holes, he was four strokes clear of the field with plenty of golf remaining today with one round remaining on Sunday. There were nine 60s on the Champions Tour before Sutherland's breakthrough. Aug 16 - 3:18 PM

Date:

Kevin Sutherland tied for 67th in last year's U.S. Open and is back for his 10th edition of the season's second major later this week.

Sutherland has made six of his previous nine cuts in this event, but has never nabbed a tee time at Pinehurst No. 2 until this week. He advanced out of the Daly City, California sectional, which came as a bit of a surprise given his light schedule in 2014. His only start on any major tour was a missed cut at the Rex Hospital Open on the Web.com Tour.

Kevin Sutherland has been removed from the published field of this week's Puerto Rico Open.

Well, that didn't last long. Perhaps we've already seen the last of him. Whatever the case, we won't miss him.

Kevin Sutherland has been added to the published field of this week's Puerto Rico Open.

Sutherland was born on the Fourth of July, and he'll be celebrating his 50th birthday this summer, so we're not likely to see much more of him on the PGA TOUR after this week. He hasn't played anywhere since missing the cut at the Reno-Tahoe Open seven months ago. This will mark his first appearance in Puerto Rico.

Kevin Sutherland gave it a good run but he settled for a share of 12th place at the John Deere Classic at 15-under-par 70-65-65-69=269.

The JDC was his final start via a Major Medical Extension from which he needed to finish no worse a three-way T3 to meet its terms and retain status. The $96,600.00 paycheck leaves him $140,394 short of his target. He had already secured conditional status, so this won't be the last we'll see of him this season. In fact, he's scheduled to compete at this week's Sanderson Farms Championship. Sutherland is also comfortably inside the top 200 in FedExCup points, so at worst he'll qualify for the Web.com Tour Finals.

Kevin Sutherland turned in a 6-under-par 31-34=65 in the third round of the John Deere Classic to reach the 54-hole mark at 13-under 200.

Sutherland picked up seven birdies to just one bogey on his navigation of TPC Deere Run on Saturday afternoon, putting to a 1.462 average in the process. This is his 11th start of the season, and his T18 at the Travelers Championship in his last outing stands as his only top-65 finish of the season. He now finds himself contending for his second PGA TOUR win, so something he picked up in Connecticut has made the trip to Silvis, Illinois.

Kevin Sutherland turned in a 6-under-par 31-34=65 for his second round of the John Deere Classic to reach the midpoint in 7-under 135, five strokes off the very early 36-hole clubhouse lead.

Sutherland was cruising along today, playing his first 17 holes in bogey-free 8-under with eight birdies, including respective conversions from 12'5" and 28'2" at the third and fifth holes, but he concluded his lap of TPC Deere Run with a double bogey at the par-4 ninth hole. He sent his approach into a greenside bunker and didn't find the putting surface until his fourth shot. The 49-year-old would then two-putt from just inside eight feet for the 6. This is his last start on a Major Medical Extension. He needs no worse than a three-way T3 to retain status and he's already secured conditional status, so expect him to remain aggressive on the weekend.

Kevin Sutherland is listed in the published field of next week's John Deere Classic.

Should he honor this commitment, this will be Sutherland's last start via his Major Medical Extension. To retain status, he needs to earn $236,994. That would require no worse than a three-way T3 worth $239,200. (A solo fourth pays $220,800.) Don't rule it out. He last competed at the Travelers and finished T18, so the game is there, and he's 9-for-10 at TPC Deere Run with three top 10s. He' already eclipsed the threshold to secure conditional status. The JDC has a purse of just $4.6 million.

Kevin Sutherland completed 72 holes of the Travelers Championship in 5-under-par 69-70-68-68=275 to finish with a share of 18th place worth $76,860.00.

Sutherland made his hay on holes 12-18 at TPC River Highlands this week, going bogey-free 8-under with two eagles. Today he holed out from the greenside bunker for eagle at the drivable par-4 15th. While he's down to one start on his Major Medical Extension to earn $236,994 and retain status, he's secured conditional status for the remainder of the season as a safety net. Sutherland cleared that threshold by $19,229 today.

Kevin Sutherland finished in a tie for 67th place at the U.S. Open at 23-over-par 73-74-84-72=303, earning $17,965.00.

He survived the cut but not much else as Merion this week. Sutherland went just 6-for-46 in birdie opportunities to wrangle his best finish in his last 16 starts spanning just over two years. Today's payday leaves him with two starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $313,854 and retain status. He's also short of securing conditional status by $57,631. Look for him again at this week's Travelers Championship.

At 5-over-par 70-71-73-71=285, Kevin Sutherland tied for 71st place at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

He circled only eight par breakers -- all birdies -- at TPC Southwind this week, but he still managed to pocket $11,172.00. In his last 15 starts dating back to 2011, he's missed 11 cuts and finished no better than T70 at last year's WM Phoenix Open. Sutherland will make the trip to Merion Golf Club for this week's U.S. Open with three starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $331,819 and retain status.

Kevin Sutherland shot 2-over-par 69-73=142 at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, missing the cut by two strokes.

Kevin Sutherland tied for 73rd place at the Wells Fargo Championship, finishing among the 11 golfers the failed to survive the 54-hole cut.

Sutherland holed just six birdies over three rounds, but it was enough to end an 0-for-5 start to his season. The $12,596.00 payday leaves him with five starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $342,991 and retain status.

Kevin Sutherland spun a bogey-free, 2-under-par 35-35=70 in his second round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans but will miss the cut.

He'll have to settle with a step in the right direction at best this week. He went 5-for-5 in scrambling at TPC Louisiana today but converted only two birdies. After his opening 73, he reached the halfway point in 1-under 143, which grew progressively worse on the leaderboard after he signed his card earlier today. This is his fifth missed cut in as many tries this season. It leaves him with six starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $355,587 and retain status.

Kevin Sutherland reached the midpoint of the Tampa Bay Championship in 7-over-par 74-75=149 and will miss the cut.

He was sitting just under the cut line with five holes to play, but then proceeded to card four bogeys on the way in. For the week, he recorded just birdies, both at the par-4 seventh hole. This drops him to 0-for-4 on the season. He now has seven starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $355,587 and retain status.
