World No. 1907 Bobby Gates is in the published field at this week's AT&T Byron Nelson in Irving, Texas. UPDATE: Gates posted rounds of 73-73=146 (+6) to miss the cut, and now has just four starts remaining on his Medical Extension out of the reshuffle category.
If the Texas A&M alum actually tees it up, it'll be his first start on TOUR since a missed cut at the 2014 Travelers. That season, where he went 1-for-14 with a lone cash of T80/MDF at the Farmers, ended with hip surgery in July. The 31-year-old is playing on a medical extension out of the reshuffle category that dates back to the 2014-15 season. He still has the original five starts remaining to earn 437.210 FedExCup points or $701,426 and a promotion to the Major Medical category. The Florida native has made five rehab starts on the Tour in 2017, missing three cuts with a best of T48. He's 1-for-4 at the Nelson, cashing a T74/MDF in 2012. Wed, May 17, 2017 12:16:00 PM

Bobby Gates remains positioned at the bottom of the reshuffle category on the PGA TOUR.

It's there that he has a medical extension affording five starts to collect $701,426 or 437.21 FedExCup points for a promotion to the Major Medical category. Gates hasn't pegged it in sanctioned competition since missing the cut at the Travelers Championship in mid-June of 2014. Shortly thereafter, he underwent surgery on his left hip. On Sept. 9 of this year, he wrote the following caption to a photo on Instagram (which you can view at the link below): "Not exactly the best way to spend a Wednesday. Had to get the hip scoped again. Just bump in the road." Considering the enormity of the challenge of his terms and the rust he'll need to shed upon return, whenever it happens, gamers are advised to lay off the Texas A&M product. He'll turn 30 years of age on New Year's Eve.

Bobby Gates will begin the 2014-15 season with five starts on a medical extension in the reshuffle category to earn $701,426 or 437.210 FedExCup points and a promotion to the Major Medical category.

Gates has surgery on his left hip in mid-July. Prior to it, he went 1-for-14 with a T80/MDF at the Farmers. Even when he returns, whenever that is, he's unlikely to warrant a spot in any lineup that rewards success.

Bobby Gates alerted his followers on Twitter today that he had hip surgery on Wednesday.

"Well it's over," he wrote. "Had my hip surgery done yesterday and looking forward to beginning rehab. All went well." This probably explains why he didn't compete in The Greenbrier Classic and John Deere Classic. Gates has cashed just once in 14 starts this season and that was a T80/MDF at the Farmers Insurance Open. It's unlikely that you had him stowed away somewhere, but he's fully exempt on the PGA TOUR nonetheless. Depending on what the TOUR allows for a medical, he'll land either in the reshuffle category with a medical for 2014-15 or in the Minor Medical category. Of course, he could graduate from the Tour Finals for his full card again while playing with the medical riding shotgun.

Bobby Gates shot 7-under-par 70-67=137 in today's U.S. Open sectional qualifier at Lakeside Country Club in Houston, Texas, good for one of three berths up for grabs into the major.

Gates has had a rough go of it this season with just one payday in 11 starts, but he flashed elation on Twitter after today's success, writing the following: Oh how much I've missed you! Can't wait for an amazing week." The post includes a photo of the invite. In his only previous start in this major, he tied for 40th in 2010. University of Alabama's Cory Whitsett took medalist honors at 12-under 66-66=132 with 14 birdies against two bogeys. The two-time NCAA champ grew up playing today's host track. Anthony Broussard grabbed the final berth in a playoff over William Kropp. Both completed 36 holes in 5-under 139. Whitsett and Broussard will be making their PGA TOUR debuts at Pinehurst. Notables that fell short at this site include: 141--Matt Weibring; 2013 Q School medalist Zach Fischer ... 143--Duffy Waldorf; Roland Thatcher ... 144-Todd Hamilton ... 147--Scott Verplank.

Bobby Gates is searching for form as he enters this week's HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Gates has missed the cut in his previous five events and is just 5-for-30 since the start of 2013. Considering he hasn't broke par in seven rounds at TPC Four Seasons, it might be more of the same for him this week.

Bobby Gates returns to TPC Louisiana for his fourth Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Gates' trend in this event is juicy, missing the cut in 2011 before a T24 in '12 and a T4 last year. Considering the Finals grad is 244th on the FedExCup standings and has made just one of nine cuts in 2013-14, he could use a big week in the Bayou in the worst way. In 21 rounds this season, he's cracked 70 just once and failed to break 80 twice.

Bobby Gates makes his sixth start in the Valero Texas Open this week.

Gates made his first appearance here in 2009, tying for 47th, before the venue switched from La Cantera GC to TPC San Antonio in 2010. He's never missed a start at TPC San Antonio, but has missed two cuts. His highlight was a T15 in 2011. He's made just one cut in seven tries in 2013-14, so he could use a spark in the worst way.

Bobby Gates failed to retain his PGA TOUR card during the 2013 season and had to drop down to the Tour Finals in order to pick up one of 25 remaining tickets to the TOUR.

Gates converted that into two starts before the lengthy break, but failed to secure a paycheck. That could spell trouble, as he lost ground in the reshuffle and could now find starts difficult to come by. He is a veteran of 83 PGA TOUR events, but has only made 32 cuts and five top 10s. By most measures, he is not a worthy investment for gamers.

Bobby Gates readies for his second start of the 2013-14 PGA TOUR season at this week's OHL Classic at Mayakoba.

Gates tied for fifth in the 2011 edition, breaking par in each of his four trips around El Camaleón. Given he is subject to the reshuffle, which takes place following this event, a big finish could do wonders for future opportunities on the TOUR. He missed the cut at the Open.

Bobby Gates has been added to the published field of this week's Open.

Gates was the second alternate when the field was released on Friday evening. He gained entry when Steve Marino withdrew. Gates went 4-for-20 on the PGA TOUR in 2013 but regained fully exempt status via the Tour Finals. He missed the cut in last year's but tied for 24th in 2011.

The opening round of the Sanderson Farms Championship has been suspended until 7:00 a.m. CT on Friday.

Tournament organizers scheduled two restarts, but Mother Nature didn't cooperate. Bobby Gates was one of 64 golfers from the afternoon wave stranded. He's completed three holes in 2-over-par with two pars and a double bogey. If the sprained wrist that forced him to withdraw after one round in the Quad Cities last week (and the Rockford, Ill., Pro-Am on Monday) was feeling better, his scorecard hasn't illustrated it yet.

Bobby Gates is listed in the published field of next week's Sanderson Farms Championship.

He called it quits from the John Deere Classic after his opening round due to a sprained wrist, and was then replaced in the Rockford (Ill.) Pro-Am this coming Monday.

Bobby Gates withdrew from the John Deere Classic after his opening round due to a sprained wrist.

Adam Nicholas, a representative of the Rockford (Ill.) Pro-Am, tweeted the detail. Gates was scheduled to compete in the annual event a couple of hours from the Quad Cities this coming Monday. He posted a 5-over-par 36-40=76 at TPC Deere Run before calling it a week. He converted on only one of 11 birdie chances, that a conversion from 10'9" at the par-3 16th hole. He'd swallow three bogeys and a triple as well. This drops him to 2-for-16 on the season.

Bobby Gates has been added to the published field of this week's AT&T National.

Gates was the fifth alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He secured his tee time at Congressional on a sponsor exemption. He's just 2-for-13 on the year, but sits 166th in FedExCup points thanks to a T4 in New Orleans. He shared 42nd place at last year's AT&T National.
