Blake Adams turned in a 3-under-par 35-34=69 at PGA West's Nicklaus Private in today's third round of the Humana Challenge to post 4-under 212, but he will miss the cut by a few strokes.
He landed 13 greens in regulation and converted six birdies today, but also swallowed three bogeys, two of which on par 5s. Even if he'd have gone bogey-free, Adams may have needed a 65 to play on. Despite Friday's 79, it was a step forward in the long-term given the attention he earned right out of the gates with Thursday's 64. When he makes his next start, he'll have 15 starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $494,044 or 277.737 FedExCup points and retain status. Suffice it to say that he's deserved of a spot in deeper full-season rosters. Jan 24 - 5:56 PM

Blake Adams followed his magnificent 64 in the opening round of the Humana Challenge with a 7-over-par 40-39=79 in today's second round at La Quinta Country Club.

All that work on Thursday is gone to waste. Adams split 10 (of 14) fairways today, but hit only nine greens in regulation. That imprecision led to six bogeys and a double. His only birdie came at the par-5 11th hole. He's suddenly just 1-under 133 as he gets set to take on Nicklaus Private at PGA West on Saturday. He'll likely need a round like his opener to survive the 54-hole cut.

Blake Adams returned to the PGA TOUR in style, picking off 10 birdies en route to an 8-under-par 31-33=64 at PGA West's Palmer Private in his opening round of the Humana Challenge.

Talk about eliminating all doubt over whether he's ready to go. This marked his first sanctioned action in 10 months and first since having surgery to replace his left hip last summer. Going out in the first group off the 10th tee, Adams promptly birdied the par-5 11th hole with a 15-foot conversion. He connected birdies on holes 14-18, the last two dropping from 13'7" and 14'11", respectively. A sixth consecutive birdie disappeared at the par-4 first before he settled for a par at the par-5 second. Adams circled three more consecutively beginning at No. 5, the last of the string measuring 17'10" at the par-4 seventh. Only Palmer Private is lasered for this tournament, but at the time he signed his card, he led the 52 on the course in strokes gained: putting with a clip just shy of 4.400. He'll tackle La Quinta Country Club in Friday's second round.

Blake Adams is listed in the published field of next week's Humana Challenge.

Given the frequency on Twitter with which he's circled this tournament as his return to competition, he's rarin' to go. Adams hasn't competed since having to withdraw during the 2014 Valspar Championship 10 months ago. He underwent long-awaited surgery to replace his left hip in July. He's expected to come out rusty, but he's also a fine sleeper in season-long salary games. The 39-year-old still has 16 starts on his Major Medical Extension to collect $497,044 or 277.737 FedExCup points and retain status. And despite his limited playing time the last two years, he hasn't missed a Humana Challenge since he was first eligible in 2010. It's a terrific place to work on his game since the courses are pushovers and he's guaranteed 54 holes.

Blake Adams alerted his followers on Twitter as to when he will be back inside the ropes on the PGA TOUR.

Adams wrote, "A new PGA Tour season begins today in CA. I will return in Jan at the Humana. My surgically repaired hip feels great. #ifeel10yrsyounger" The Humana Challenge will be contested Jan. 22-25. He had surgery to replace his left hip in the third week of July. It's great news and the emotional takeaway is not surprising since the 39-year-old has been dealing with a bum hip for a long time. He has 16 starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $497,044 or 277.737 FedExCup points and retain status.

In a reply to Jarrod Lyle on Twitter today, Blake Adams circled a month for his hopeful return to competition.

Recognizing Lyle's bogey-free opener at the Web.com Tour's Midwest Classic, Adams wrote, "@jarrodlylepga Great playing today. Hope to see ya when I hopefully return to the Tour in January." Given that Adams was scheduled for hip replacement surgery today, January seems like an aggressive time frame, but we'll trust him. Since he'll be getting a late start on the 2014-15 season and already armed with a Major Medical Extension, don't be surprised if he eases his way back just in case he needs to save a start or three for the following season. There's no hurry for him to play sooner than later.

Blake Adams alerted his followers on Twitter today that he will have surgery to replace his hip this week.

Adams wrote, "Scheduled for total hip replacement surgery in the AM. Dr Matta (replaced Tom Watson's) is my surgeon. I will be back on Tour soon #painfree" Given the timing of the tweet, it's probable that surgery is on Wednesday, but that's just a detail. We'll also have to assume that it's his left hip that will be replaced. While he's only 38 years of age, it's been no secret for a while that this was going to occur at some point. He underwent major surgery on the same joint in early 2013. Adams returned to competition at the season-opening Frys.com Open and made eight starts. He cashed in five. He still has 16 starts remaining on a Major Medical Extension to earn $497,044 or 277.9 FedExCup points and retain status.

Blake Adams has been removed from the published field of this week's FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Adams would have been teeing it up for the first time since the Valspar Championship in mid-March. He suffered a setback related to his injured hip. Whenever he returns, he'll have 16 starts on a Major Medical Extension to earn $497,044 or 277.9 FedExCup points and retain status.

Blake Adams is listed in the published field of next week's FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Adams has been sidelined since withdrawing from the Valspar Championship with a hip injury. He still has 16 starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $497,044 or 277.9 FedExCup points and retain status, but by sitting out two-and-a-half months, he's assured a carryover of his MME into 2014-15 if he needs it. He's 5-for-8 on the season with a season-best T29 at the Northern Trust Open. Adams tied for 15th in his only previous appearance at TPC Southwind in 2011.

Blake Adams withdrew from the Valspar Championship following his opening round due to a hip injury.

Uh-oh. It hasn't been specified which hip is troubling him, but he had major surgery performed on his left hip about 13-and-a-half months ago. He shot a 7-over-par 38-40=78 today. The short week means that he's down to 16 starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $497,044 or 277.9 FedExCup points and retain status.

At 4-under-par 67-70-71-72=280, Blake Adams tied for 29th place at the Northern Trust Open.

He had our attention through the cut, but hit only eight greens in regulation in each of the final two rounds. Nevertheless, this is his best finish since The McGladrey Classic in October of 2012. With today's $42,600.83 and 39.5 FedExCup points applied, he now has 17 starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $497,044 or 277.9 FedExCup points and retain status. Despite this week's fade, he belongs on rosters in deeper full-season formats.

Blake Adams turned in a 1-under-par 34-36=70 in his second round of the Northern Trust Open to post 5-under 137 at the midpoint, one stroke adrift of the early 36-hole clubhouse lead.

He opened with an eagle putt that dropped in from 15'8" at the par-5 first hole, and then just tried to keep water in the bucket the rest of the way. Adams found only half of his fairways and greens in regulation overall and traded two birdies with three bogeys on his final 17 holes. His other notable conversions included a birdie roll from 16'1" at the fifth hole and a par save from 12'11" at 12.

Blake Adams opened the Northern Trust Open with a 4-under-par 34-33=67, finishing one stroke off the clubhouse lead.

Adams went out in the second threesome off the par-4 10th hole today and walked off the ninth leading the field with eight birdies and a strokes gained-putting split north of 3.900. His par breakers included conversions from 27'11", 18'2" and 34'11" at the 15th, second and fourth holes, respectively. He found 13 greens in regulation but got up and down just once for par, and that was as the result of a 23'2" par attempt that disappeared at the par-4 13th. He entered the week having cashed in four of six events, but he's scored under par in every second round. Don't rule out another red number tomorrow since he'll be going out with the morning wave.

Blake Adams stumbled in the finale of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am after which he signed for a 6-over-par 41-37=78 to finish in a tie for 45th place at 1-over 288.

Adams was paired with Phil Mickelson in the antepenultimate group off the first tee today. An opening double bogey at the par-4 first hole set the unfortunate tone during which he'd add five bogeys and another double to negate three birdies. The aggregate impact resulted in a freefall of 40 spots on the leaderboard. He still logged $18,498.85 and 23.00 FedExCup points, but he could have made a significant dent into not only his Major Medical Extension but the FedExCup standings as well. Instead, he has 18 starts remaining to earn $539,645 or 317.4 FedExCup points and retain status. Look for him to attempt to rebound at this week's Northern Trust Open.

Blake Adams battled the wind for an even-par 37-35=72 on Pebble Beach Golf Links in the third round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Adams picked up an early birdie on the par-5 second, but swallowed a double bogey on the par-3 seventh when the wind was at the worst. He didn't find another par until the par-4 15th, trading four birdies for three bogeys over that seven-hole span. He managed 12 GIR and picked up just over a stroke on the field with the flat stick. He reached the 54-hole mark at 5-under 210.
