Overnight co-leader Nate Smith settled for a 2-over-par 39-35=74 in his second round of the Wells Fargo Championship.
After opening with a 67, today's effort was both disappointing and not surprising. Guys in the late-early draw that start well hope to ride that momentum to the midpoint, but Smith hasn't played a PGA TOUR event since 2011. In that context, the shocker would have been if he continued his strong play today. Instead, he hit only 10 greens in regulation and swallowed six bogeys. His longest of four birdie conversions measured just 10'8" at the 10th hole, and he missed three attempts from inside 10 feet. Fri, May 3, 2013 02:11:00 PM

Nate Smith crafted a 5-under-par 32-35=67 in his opening round of the Wells Fargo Championship, good for a share of the overnight lead.

Smith was the last of seven to hold the distinction but he's the only non-member of the septet. The 2011 PGA TOUR member has toiled on the Tour since his rookie season of 2011. At Quail Hollow today, he landed 15 greens in regulation and converted six birdies, including rolls of 38'4" and 10'3" at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. His only hiccup was a whiffed par save from 49 inches at the par-3 17th hole where he missed the green to the right off the tee.

Nate Smith withdrew during his fourth round of Q School.

He went out in 7-over-par 43 on the back side of the Stadium Course at PGA West before calling it quits. He was an aggregate 14-over through 63 holes after opening in 7-over 70-82-71=223. The 2011 PGA TOUR rookie finished 201st on the PGA TOUR money list so he'll have to settle for Past Champion status (years 2-3) on the Nationwide Tour next year.

Nate Smith was added to the published field of this week's McGladrey Classic.

The rookie was the second alternate when the field was released on Friday. He gained entry today when Briny Baird passed on his top-10 exemption. Smith is coming off a career-best T30 at the, but has a long way to go to secure his 2012 PGA TOUR card. He's currently 197th on the money list.

Nate Smith spun a 5-under-par 35-30=65 in his opening round of the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Smith is one of nine rookies in the Sony field making his PGA TOUR debut this week. (Overall, there are 27 rookies teeing it up this week.) He hit just seven (of 14) fairways and nine greens, but got around with tidy blade work (25 putts). He also converted six birdies, including tries of 15'6", 13'9" and 12'9" and the ninth, 12th and 15th holes, respectively, finishing just one off the clubhouse lead.
