Steven Tiley is at a rare altitude after a 2-under-par 34-36=70 earned him T2 on the live leaderboard, two back of Matteo Manassero's early advantage, in round one of the Hero Indian Open at DLF Golf & CC.
The Englishman gained playing rights for this season with fifth place at Qualifying School back in November - his first full-time crack at the main tour after ten years as a professional. In 30 career starts on the European Tour he has just two top ten finishes, one of those the hastily finished 36-hole 2014 Madeira Islands Open (when a caddie died on the course). Moreover he is 1-for-5 this season with the exception reaping nothing better than T57 in the South African Open. All the more reason for him to capitalize on this chance then. He earned it by pegging a pair of birdie-2s on the front nine (at 3 and 5), plus more red at 8 and 11. His two bogeys came on the long holes: the first bogey-6 came at the 4th and then he turned lunch a little sour by closing with another at 18. Mar 9 - 3:51 AM

At 9-under-par 64-69=133, Steven Tiley ran away with medalist honors by three strokes at Local Final Qualifying at The Musselburgh in Scotland.

The top three earned exemptions into The Open Championship at Muirfield in two weeks. Tiley circled 13 birdies against four bogeys (all in his second round) to finish three clear of Tyrell Hatton (6-under 69-67=136) and Lloyd Saltman (6--under 68-68=136). The latter buried 14 birdies but swallowed four bogeys and two doubles. All three have played at least one Open Championship in the past. The only notable that failed to qualify from this site was Jarmo Sandelin. The one-time Ryder Cupper turned in a pair of 73s to finish 10 strokes too high to force a playoff for an exemption.
