Chris Williams will once again tee it up in the Farmers Insurance Open on a sponsor exemption.
Williams is not a member of the PGA TOUR, but has enjoyed his share of sponsor exemptions after a storied collegiate career at the University of Washington. Given that a pair of 21-year-old players were in the final grouping in the third round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open last week, it would not be a shock for the budding young star to hold his own at Torrey Pines this week. He tied for 59th in this event last year. He has also scored four top 10s and three other top 20s in Canada in the last year. Tue, Feb 3, 2015 07:54:00 AM

Chris Williams is in the field for this week's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial by virtue of winning the 2013 Ben Hogan Award.

Since Colonial Country Club is considered a hub for all things Hogan, it makes sense that the winner of the prestigious award enjoys the spoils of a trip to the Crowne Plaza Invitational. Williams is now a professional, but before turning pro he was the top-ranked amateur while playing at the University of Washington. He is not a member of the PGA TOUR.

Chris Williams hung nine points on the board in his opening round of the Reno-Tahoe Open.

The PGA TOUR non-member tied for 30th in his professional debut at the Travelers Championship, and then chased it with a missed cut at the AT&T National. In addition to this week's start in Reno, he'll tee it up at the Wyndham Championship, also on a sponsor exemption. Of course, if he plays his final 54 holes at Montreux like he did today, he might not need the handout. Williams circled three birdies on each nine to erase a double bogey at the par-4 first hole. He reached the clubhouse just five points off the lead.

Chris Williams is scheduled to compete at this week's Travelers Championship.

If you don't know his name, consider yourself already behind. The former first-team All-American from the University of Washington and 2011 Walker Cupper turned professional for this week's PGA TOUR stop in Connecticut. He won the 2013 Ben Hogan Award and was atop the World Amateur Golf Ranking when he inked the paperwork to play for pay. Williams signed with Excel Sports Management, which represents Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, Gary Woodland and Patrick Cantlay, the last of whom turned pro at last year's Travelers. This is the first of four scheduled sponsor exemptions for Williams, who will turn 22 years old on Friday. He's lined up berths in next week's AT&T National as well as the Reno-Tahoe Open (Aug. 1-4) and Wyndham Championship (Aug. 15-18).
