Stephen Ames signed for a 3-over-par 39-34=73 following his opening round of The Honda Classic.

Two weeks ago today, Ames walked off Riviera with a back injury during his first round of the Northern Trust Open. His first hole today set the tone for his return. He needed four shots to reach the green at the par-4 10th hole where he'd go on to record his first of two double bogeys. He added bogeys at holes 12, 15 and 16. However, his putter cooperated time and again throughout the round. Ames holed a par save from 12'11" at the 13th, and then poured in respective birdies from 41'11", 16'1" and 33'4" at Nos. 2, 3 and 5 coming in. Overall, he hit 11 greens and circled four birdies.

Ames withdrew during his opening round of last week's Northern Trust Open with a back injury. It's nothing new for the 48-year-old. Despite a somewhat inspiring start to his year, the depth of the field at PGA National doesn't warrant even a flier on him.

Stephen Ames withdrew during his opening round of the Northern Trust Open, citing a back injury.

Ames started his round with an eagle at the par-5 first hole, but he reached the turn in 3-over-par 38. He then found the expansive fairway off the tee at the 10th before walking off. He dealt with a back injury last year, so this isn't a new malady. After opening this season with a pair of paydays, he's now gone 0-for-3.

Stephen Ames looks to get back to his successful ways of his first two starts at this week's Northern Trust Open.

Ames started off the year clicking on all cynlinders, notching a T20 at the Sony Open and a T37 at the Humana Challenge. Since then, he's missed his last two cuts. His history at Riviera is eerily similar. He made his first five cuts, but since then has seen the weekend just once in five tries including two W/Ds. It's hard to be too optimistic about his chances.

Stephen Ames chased his opening 65 at the Sony Open in Hawaii with a 3-under-par 33-34=67 in his second round to establish the 36-hole clubhouse lead at 8-under 132.

Ames poured in six birdies today, four of which from beyond 10 feet, including conversions of 15'6" and 16'2" at the sixth and eighth holes, respectively. He also sustained three bogeys to leave the door open at the top of the leaderboard. Still, that he's started 2013 so strongly is impressive. He just might develop into a nifty pick-up at some point.

Stephen Ames has been removed from the published field of this week's Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic.

Ames won this tournament in 2007 and 2009, so course history buffs will be disappointed that he's no longer available this week, not that he'd have been a viable option anyway. He's cashed in just seven of 20 starts with two top 25s, both occurring in his four starts. He's currently 186th on the money list, but he's fully exempt through 2013.
