Stephen Ames is back for his fourth look at The Old White TPC at The Greenbrier Classic this week.
Ames strung together four rounds of 68 or better during his 2010 debut on the way to a T21 finish. That was before some course renovations that made the course slightly tougher, and Ames hasn't made the weekend in his two appearances since. Possessing just one round in the 60s over his last 29 rounds, it's hard to fathom a scenario where he finds himself in contention this week. Jul 2 - 9:46 AM

Stephen Ames was disqualified from the HP Byron Nelson Championship for signing an incorrect scorecard after his second round.

Ames double-bogeyed the par-3 fifth hole, but he signed for a 4. He completed 36 holes in 2-over-par 70-72=142 and would have missed the cut on the number anyway. Not that it matters, but it's fun to note that he holed out for eagle from 58 yards at the par-5 16th hole today. He landed his third past hole from which point is backed up to find mama.

Stephen Ames will take his seventh crack at Quail Hollow Club for this week's Wells Fargo Championship.

Ames celebrated his 50th birthday on Monday. Finding a way into contention this week would be a great present to give himself. It's just not likely as the veteran has missed 8-of-13 cuts on the season, and only once finished inside the top 45.

Stephen Ames crafted a 4-under-par 34-34=68 in the third round of the Valero Texas Open, improving to 3-under 213 for the tournament.

Ames circled five birdies to just one bogey during his navigation of TPC San Antonio. Worth noting, he began his day on the 10th hole so he made up plenty of ground on the field. The putter was the key, as he gained well over a stroke with the flat stick while hitting a very average 12 GIR. His last top 10 came at the 2011 FedEx St. Jude Classic, meaning there could be some final-round jitters.

Stephen Ames returns San Antonio for his eighth Valero Texas Open.

Ames is playing this year on a career earnings exemption and currently ranks 193rd in the FedExCup standings. Needless to say he isn't making the most of his free pass in 2013-14. While he's a grizzled veteran in this event, this is just the second time he's taken on TPC San Antonio, finishing in a tie for 63rd in 2012. No need to invest in him this week.

Stephen Ames penciled in a 5-over-par 37-39=76 for his opening round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Back in action after withdrawing prior to last week's Farmers with "back issues," Ames did nothing today to suggest that he's healthy again. While he landed 13 greens in regulation, he whiffed on five putts inside nine feet to post a strokes gained-putting split south of -4.040. His round featured three birdies, four bogeys and two doubles. His 50th birthday on April 28 can't arrive soon enough.
Jan 30 - 2:27 PM

Stephen Ames is listed in the published field of next week's Waste Management Phoenix Open.

As we relayed to you yesterday, Ames was scratched late at the Farmers due to "back issues." That said, he's missed the cut in four of his last five trips to TPC Scottsdale, squeezing in a T62 in 2011.

Stephen Ames has been removed from the published field of this week's Farmers Insurance Open.

He's turning 50 on April 28 and sits just 1-for-5 on the season. Ames is fully exempt via a career earnings exemption but he hasn't logged a top 15 since the 2011 FedEx St. Jude Classic. UPDATE: The Globe and Mail's Jeff Brooke later alerted his followers on Twitter that Ames has "back issues" that are "not serious."

Stephen Ames has full status on the PGA TOUR for 2013-14 by virtue of a one-time career earnings exemption.

Any player inside the top 50 on the all-time money list is afforded one mulligan if he fails to retain full playing privileges, and Ames has chosen to use his this season. Since he turns 50 in April, it makes perfect sense that he would burn it now rather than save it for some unknown reason. He made one of four cuts thus far, tying for 48th at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open on the heels of an opening-round 65.

Stephen Ames followed his opening 65 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open with a 3-under-par 35-33=68 to post 9-under 133 at the midpoint, six back of the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

He split 11 (of 14) fairways but landed only 12 greens in regulation today, limiting his birdie count to four. Two are of note, dropping from 17'8" and 14'2" at the 12th and 13th holes, respectively, but he whiffed on a pair of tries inside eight feet. That included flubbing from 34 inches at the par-3 17th where he squared his only bogey of the day.

Stephen Ames opened the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open with a 6-under-par 33-32=65, good for very early possession of the clubhouse lead.

Ames went off in the first threesome off the 10th tee today. He racked up 15 greens in regulation and signed his card with a strokes gained-putting split of nearly 4.150. Of his seven birdies, four found the cup from outside 10 feet, including rolls from 46'6" and 31'2" at the 10th and second holes, respectively. He also poured in a bogey conversion from 10'5" at par-4 11th for what was his only blemish of the round. Ames is burning a career earnings exemption this season for sitting inside the top 50 (at 44th). He'll turn 50 years of age on April 28, 2014.

Stephen Ames will play the Wyndham Championship for the first time since 2003.

Considering Sedgefield Country Club took over as the host venue in 2008, we have nothing in the form of course history to go on for the veteran. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out Ames’ sudden inclusion of this event in his schedule. At 171st in the FedExCup standings, he’s about to miss out on the Playoffs.

Stephen Ames will play in his second AT&T National this week, and first at Congressional Country Club.

Ames tied for 51st in the 2011 edition when the U.S. Open forced a venue change. He enters the week having made half of his 14 cuts and ranked 150th in the FedExCup standings. Perhaps a surprise to many, he leads the TOUR in strokes gained-putting, but comes in at 180th in ball-striking. With the demands on tee-to-green play this week, that isn’t a good combination.

Stephen Ames sits 5-under-par 67-68=135 through two rounds of the HP Byron Nelson Championship, three strokes adrift of the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

He's maximized on his opportunities to score at TPC Four Seasons this week. Ames has hit just 23 greens in regulation but he's converted 10 birdies against five bogeys. Two among today's set of par breakers found the cup from outside 10 feet, the longer of which measuring 16 feet at the fifth hole. Of his six birdies on Thursday, three disappeared from 16-25 feet.

Stephen Ames posted a 5-under-par 31-36=67 in his opening round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, finishing three strokes off the clubhouse lead.

Ames will turn 49 years of age on Sunday, but he dialed back the clock today. Fully exempt through this season on a multiple-win exemption, he hit 13 greens and drilled home seven birdies, six of which on his first eight holes. After a bogey-5 to start his round at 1, he'd go on to roll in birdies from 19'9" at 3, 22'1" at 5 and 22'3" at 6. The blitz also included a 12-footer at No. 7.
