Overnight co-leader Michael Hendry put it in reverse at the Volvo China Open on Friday with a 1-over-par 36-37=73.
Three bogeys against two birdies dropped the New Zealander to T13 although, at 3-under 141, he's only five behind leader Julien Quesne and can make that up over the final 36 holes. The 27-year-old won last week's Token Homemate Cup on the Japan Tour with a 69-64 weekend finish so has that fresh in the memory. Today, Hendry wiped out bogeys at 3 and 12 with birdies at 9 and 14 but another blemish at 16 left him over par for the day. Apr 24 - 7:58 AM

Michael Hendry is in place to score back-to-back wins after shooting a 4-under-par 33-35=68 to share the early clubhouse lead at the Volvo China Open.

The New Zealander is coming off a victory on the Japan Tour where he closed with a 64 to capture last week's Token Homemate Cup. He continued the good work here with a bogey-free lap of Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club. All his birdies came in the opening 10 holes and all were on par 4s. He'll look to up his game on the four par 5s later in the week. Hendry said later that the confidence gained from his win in Japan had helped him. "It makes the game a little easier I think," he said. "It’s always nice to play tournaments when you’re in good form."

Michael Hendry shared 50th place at the 2013-2014 World Golf Championship-HSBC Champions and will take another shot this week at Sheshan International.

The 35-year old Aussie enters the week with six straight international finishes outside of the top 35. Given those starts all coming on the Japan Golf Tour against far inferior fields, Hendry will have his work cut out for him this week. With no cut this week, Hendry could be considered in salary-cap formats, but the no-cut event could also work against him, as he doesn't have much experience in these strong-field WGC events, and that gives him 72 guaranteed holes to keep piling on the bogeys if things go sour.

Mike Hendry will make his World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship debut at TPC Blue Monster at Doral this week.

Hendry earned his spot in the elite field thanks to his second-place standing in the Australasian Tour Order of Merit. While there are many players this week trending well, his last three starts may take the cake. He followed up a fourth-place finish at the Lexus of Blackburn Heritage Classic with a runner-up at the QLD PGA Championship and a win at the NZ PGA Championship. We will soon see if his game can travel.
