Justin Harding made a hole-in-one during round two of the Tshwane Open, but limped round the rest of the course for a 5-over-par 36-39=75, leaving the round one leader 63-75=138 heading into the weekend.
Despite the excitement of the ace it was not a good day for Harding. Playing from the 10th tee he started bogey-bogey and might have hoped that the ace on the 141-yard 14th had righted the ship. Alas the brutal 18th cost him one shot and the par-4 fourth another two. Birdie-3 on No. 7 seemed to offer hope only for the klaxon to sound and disrupt his flow. He returned to bogey 8 and 9. His previous best effort in a European Tour event is T11 in the 2014 Alfred Dunhill Championship. He can still challenge that but is now 5 behind the leader. Fri, Feb 12, 2016 11:52:00 AM

Justin Harding birdied six of his last 10 holes in a 7-under-par 33-30=63 in round one of the Tshwane Open in South Africa, good enough for the lead after Thursday's play.

Harding, ranked 509th in the world, upstaged his better-known compatriots with a sparkling back nine at Pretoria CC. Coming off a birdie at 9, he circled three on the spin at 11, 12 and 13 before leaping into the outright lead on his own with two more at 17 and 18. He leads by a shot from fellow South African Anthony Michael. Two more home players, Theunis Spangenburg (-5) and Jaco Van Zyl (-4), complete the top four. In one respect, it's hard to see where this round has come from. Harding has missed the cut in all three of the European Tour co-sanctioned events in South Africa so far and also failed to cash in this event last year. However, he is a three-time winner on his home tour (2010, 2011 and 2015) and qualified for the Open Championship in 2013. ""I personally don't find the course all that easy. It may be short but you still have to put it into position. There is enough slope on the greens so you are going to have some tricky putts," said Harding.

Justin Harding, Eduardo de la Riva and Darryn Lloyd survived International Final Qualifying at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington in Johannesburg, South Africa to earn berths into the Open Championship.

Harding, a native South African, cruised to medalist honoros at 14-under-par 66-64=130. He converted one eagle and 15 birdies to offset three bogeys. "I’m really looking forward to my first major," he said. "With Ernie Els defending it will be a special one, and I’ve heard that Muirfield is a phenomenal place, so everything feels perfect right now." de la Riva of Spain finished three strokes back at 11-under 67-66=133. He carded an eagle and 12 birdies against one bogey and a double. South Africa's Lloyd holed three eagles and eight birdies but swallowed five bogeys to post 9-under 66-69=135. Notables that failed to advance include: 136-- Garth Mulroy ... 137--Ross McGowan ... 140--James Kingston ... 142--Richard Finch ... 146--Martin Wiegele ... 147--Anton Haig.
