Ken Looper has been added to the published field of this week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
The golfer with the caddie's nickname received one of the final two sponsor exemptions. The former LSU Tiger (via the University of New Orleans) tied for 21st in his debut here last year. He added a T35 at the Sanderson Farms Championship later in the season to go 2-for-2 in PGA TOUR starts. Somewhat amusingly, he's missed the cut in two tries in Tour events, so he's making it clear where he really wants to compete. Mon, Apr 21, 2014 11:31:00 AM

With a bogey-free, 10-under-par 31-31=62 at Lake Caroline Golf Club in Madison, Miss., Ken Looper shared medalist honors at today's open qualifier for the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Looper converted two eagles on par 5s and added six birdies to clinch his second start via open qualifying this season. He tied for 21st in New Orleans in late April. Nathaniel Rau also signed for a 10-under 62 with respective nines of 30 and 32. He circled one eagle and nine birdies to offset a lone bogey. Mark Silvers took third place with a bogey-free, 9-under 32-31=63 thanks to nine birdies. Andrew Johnson sniped the final berth into the tournament proper with an 8-under 30-34=64 after nine birdies and one bogey. The field at Annandale Golf Club is now complete at 132.

Once again the horn sounded to suspend play at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at 4:35 p.m. CT with inclement weather in the area.

The announcement on the live CBS telecast states that this is expected to be a brief delay. With only three groups still on the golf course, they just need to get about 20 to 30 more minutes of play in before a champion is crowned. Billy Horschel is in the left rough on 18 and leads D.A. Points by one stroke in an effort to pick up his first PGA TOUR victory. Ken Looper is one of those stranded on 18 green. He needed a birdie to secure a top 10 and earn a spot in the field at the Wells Fargo Championshi next week, but a washed tee shot ended any chance of that.

Ken Looper is making the most of his open qualification into the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, firing a 5-under-par 33-34=67 in the third round to reach 10-under 206.

Looper is making his first career start on the PGA TOUR this week. After playing collegiately at the University of New Orleans, he transferred to Louisiana State University for his senior season. The 24-year-old began his round day with three birdies on a blemish-free front nine at TPC Louisiana. He then added a birdie at the 13th before dropping his only shot of the day on the par-4 15th. Stepping on the 18th tee, he was in the midst of an ordinary round, but a chip-in eagle from 13 yards out of the rough vaulted him near the lead with a chance to earn a top 10 and a spot in next week's Wells Fargo Championship.
