Garrick Porteous turned professional today.
Porteous will make his debut at this week's Maybank Malaysian Open. He missed the cut at Augusta National by eight strokes (12-over-par 76-80=156). "It was a huge honor to play my final event as an amateur at the Masters, but I am so excited to finally be turning pro," he said. As a result of his decision, the 2013 British Amateur champion is no longer exempt into the U.S. Open. He concluded his amateur career slotted seventh in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Garrick Porteous defeated Toni Hakula 6 and 5 in the final of the Amateur Championship at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club in Kent, England.

It was all Porteous in the scheduled 36-hole finale. He held a 3-up margin after 18 in testing conditions before piling on. The 23-year-old from England wrapped up four years at the University of Tennessee in 2012. He arrived at the 118th edition of British Am slotted 39th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Finland's Hakula ranked 209th. One of the perks of winning this title is a berth into The Open Championship at Muirfield on July 18-21. Porteous must remain an amateur to compete in the major.
