Fred Funk posted a 3-under-par 36-33=69 in his opening round of the 3M Championship on the Champions Tour.
Funk is four strokes back of the overnight quad-leaders in this 54-hole event. Since we last relayed news on the 56-year-old, Rotoworld has learned that he no longer has a Major Medical Extension in play on the PGA TOUR. This is due to his choice to stick with a regular schedule on the 50-and-over circuit. Fri, Aug 3, 2012 06:31:00 PM

Fred Funk shot 9-under-par 72-67-72-68=279 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, good for a share of 30th place.

Not surprisingly, the 55-year-old led the field in fairways hit (47 of 56) en route to his best finish on the PGA TOUR since the 2008 Sony Open (T10). Funk will deposit a check worth $36,408.89, leaving him with two starts on his Major Medical Extension to bank $610,837 and retain status.

Fred Funk completed 36 holes of the RBC Heritage in 11-over-par 81-72=153 and will miss the cut.

Funk hit only 15 greens at Harbour Town this week and still needed 60 putts. While he carded an eagle and three birdies, it wasn't anywhere enough to offset 12 bogeys and two doubles. This leaves him with three starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $647,246 and retain status.

Fred Funk shot 9-over-par 76-73=149 at The Honda Classic and will miss the cut.

Funk split 22 (of 28) fairways but hit only 14 greens in regulation at PGA National this week. He carded 10 bogeys, one double and a triple. This leaves him with four starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $647,246 and retain status.

Fred Funk shot even-par 73-71-72-68=284 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, good for a share of 49th place worth $9,040.33.

The inaugural champion of this tournament (in 2007) did what he does best by splitting fairway all week. He missed just nine of 56, good for second-most in the field. He now has five starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $647,246 and retain status. He's scheduled to tee it up at this week's Honda Classic where he's 0-for-3 since the event moved to PGA National's Champion Course.

Fred Funk has been granted a Major Medical Extension on the PGA TOUR for 2012.

The 55-year-old was fully exempt in 2011 but made just seven starts on the PGA TOUR, opting for his usual full schedule on the Champions Tour. Funk made his last start at the U.S. Senior Open on the final weekend in July before having surgery for a torn ligament in his left thumb in early August. Three days later, he had surgery to repair scar tissue on his right knee. Should he earn $656,286 on his medical, he will retain status for the remainder of the year, but he has zero fantasy value.

Fred Funk has withdrawn from the Transitions Championship.

Golfweek.com's Alex Miceli reported on Tuesday that Funk suffered a chest strain during the pro-am at last week's Toshiba Classic, where he placed T33. "I haven’t hit a ball since Sunday," Funk told Miceli. "The doctor says I can’t hurt it anymore, it comes down to if I can take the pain." Because Funk is fully exempt on the PGA TOUR, we'll add him to our injury report. Miceli added that the golfer wouldn't tee it up on the PGA TOUR again until the Heritage on April 21, but there are two Champions Tour events in the interim.

Fred Funk has been removed from the published field of this week's Northern Trust Open.

No biggie here. Funk will tee it up at The ACE Group Classic on the Champions Tour instead this week. The 54-year-old remains fully exempt on the PGA TOUR through the end of this year.

Fred Funk is 2-under-par through seven holes of his opening round at the ACE Group Classic on the Champions Tour.

This is Funk's first tournament since having knee replacement surgery on November 16. So far, so good for the 53-year-old, who has two birdies and five pars to start his season. High winds stopped play for the day. The opening round is scheduled to resume at 8:00 a.m. ET on Saturday. Funk will be hitting his approach at the par-4 8th.

Fred Funk has postponed his return to competition until the ACE Group Classic on February 12-14.

Funk had knee replacement surgery on November 16 and was planning to be back inside the ropes on January 22 for the Mitsubishi Electric Championship, which kicks off the Champions Tour's 2010 schedule. "No, I'm not OK with it, but I've got to be OK with it," Funk said, referring to the advice of his doctor to wait a little longer. "[Dr. David Heekin] said everything looks great, that I'm way ahead of the game, but it's just too early to be pushing that knee hard." Funk has also scrapped plans to tee it up at the Northern Trust Open (Feb. 4). The 53-year-old is in his final year of the exemption he earned for winning the 2005 PLAYERS.

Fred Funk underwent knee replacement surgery in Jacksonville, Florida today.

This was more or less expected ever since he had complications from torn cartilege and a staph infection in 2008. By virtue of his victory at the 2005 PLAYERS, the 53-year-old remains fully exempt on the PGA Tour through 2010. He'll be able to start hitting balls again in about six weeks, and hopes to be back on the golf course in January.
