Kirk Triplett spun a bogey-free, 6-under-par 33-33=66 his second round of the Viking Classic, arriving at the midpoint in 11-under 133, one off of the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

Triplett posted a T22 at the Johne Deere Classic, his first top 25 in five starts this year, so he's in a bit of a groove. He hit only 12 greens in his second round spanning two days, but got up and down with perfection. He also buried six birdies, including conversions of seven yards just off the green, 15'5" and 11'3" at the third, sixth and 10th holes, respectively. Overall, the 49-year-old has hit 28 GIR and taken just 53 putts at Annandale.

Kirk Triplett is 9-under-par 68-65=133 through two rounds of the John Deere Classic, and sits five strokes adrift of the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

Triplett was the last of eight alternates to gain entry this week, and he's capitalizing, converting 13 birdies on 24 chances. But he also chipped in for birdie today at the 15th hole, one of eight birdies on his round. He hasn't had much fantasy value in recent years. Consider that his last top 10 was his victory at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson in 2006. This week's JDC is his 84th start since.

Kirk Triplett was added to the published field of this week's FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Triplett started the week no higher than 18th alternate, but gained entry following two withdrawals this afternoon. He's missed only four of 19 cuts at TPC Southwind dating back to 1991, and has posted nine top 25s, including last year's T25. He's 1-for-2 on the PGA TOUR this year on Past Champion status, and will arrive on the confidence of winning the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Maryland on Monday.

Kirk Triplett shot 69-64=133 in today's U.S. Open sectional qualifier at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, best among 10 that will punch tickets to nearby Congressional next week.

Triplett closed one lower than Jon Mills (134), who shared runner-up honors at the Melwood Prince George's County Open on Sunday (albeit a distant 12 shots back of record-setter, Steve Wheatcroft, who opened with a 74 today before calling it quits). The other eight to survive today were Fred Funk (135); Ty Tryon (135); Elliot Gealy (135); Michael Tobiason, Jr. (135); Bubba Dickerson (136); Christo Greyling (136); Will Wilcox (136); and David May (136). Several notable touring pros failed to qualify, including Brad Adamonis (137), who will serve as the first alternate from this sectional; Roland Thatcher (139); Kent Jones (140); Fabian Gomez (140); Ben Martin (140); Brian Bateman (140); Guy Boros (140); Mathew Goggin (141); Craig Barlow (142); Carlos Franco (142); Michael Thompson (144); Frank Lickliter II (144); Jason Gore (144); Brad Faxon (144); Peter Lonard (147) and Ted Purdy (151).

Kirk Triplett posted a final round of 1-over-par 72 and finished in a tie for 27th place at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

This week was the last event for Triplett's Major Medical Extension and today's check for $26,230.90 left him $664,478 short of retaining status for the final three events on this year's Tour. He is in the field of next week's Frys.com Open via a sponsor's exemption and it's possible he could get into the field of the Viking Classic on his past champion status.

Kirk Triplett carded a 6-under-par 32-33=65 in the opening round of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

A splended day for the veteran at TPC Summerlin, as he hit all 18 GIR. This is the final start via his Major Medical Extension, but he needs to win to avoid dropping in the ranks, not to mention a likely trip to Q School. A solo second would secure conditional status for the remainder of the year. He already has a sponsor exemption for next week's Frys.com.

Kirk Triplett shot 1-under-par 69-70=139 at the Wyndham Championship and will miss the cut.

Triplett buried an eagle and six birdies but a pair of double bogeys cost him the weekend. This leaves him with one start on his medical extension to earn $690,709 or face a return to Past Champion status for the remainder of the season. He would need a victory reach that level, even at the Turning Stone, the richest of the five Fall Series' events. In case you're curious, Triplett doesn't turn 50 until March of 2012.
