Joe Ogilvie chased his opening 76 at the Sony Open in Hawaii with a 1-under-par 33-36=69 to reach the midpoint in 5-over 145, nowhere near the cut line.

Things started and ended wonderfully for the veteran today, it was what occurred in between that was troublesome. He was bogey-free 4-under after only six holes. He opened with a birdie conversion from 19'8" at the first. After rolling in another from 10'4" at 3, he poured in a par save from 10'3" at the fourth. However, from hole 9 through 17, he gave back everything and then some, erasing a lone birdie at 14 with two bogeys and two doubles. The skid could have been even worse, but he holed a par save from the fringe four yards out at 11. While he knew he'd have the weekend off, he nevertheless recorded a zero-putt eagle at the par-5 18th, again rolling in his attempt from the fringe, this time from six yards away. The missed cut leaves him with 10 starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $495,134 and retain status. He'll try again at next week's Humana Challenge.

Joe Ogilvie is listed in the published field of next week's Sony Open in Hawaii.

He sat out the last five months of the 2012 PGA TOUR season with a herniated disc in his back. Now armed with a Major Medical Extension (11 starts to earn $495,134), he's returning at a site where success has escaped him. He's just 4-for-10 with one top 40. The positive spin is that the notable result occurred last year (T19).

Joe Ogilvie will begin 2013 on a Major Medical Extension.

Ogilvie called it a season after withdrawing from the Travelers Championship (in June) after one round due to a herniated disc in his back. He'll have 11 starts on the medical to earn $495,134 and retain status. We don't yet know when he'll return, but even if we did, he'd barely crack the list of usable investments.

Joe Ogilvie withdrew from the Travelers Championship this morning.

Ogilvie was scheduled to begin his second round on the first tee at 1:17 p.m. ET. In follow-up to his tweet announcing that he suffered a herniated disc, he added the following on Thursday night. "Thank you for all the well wishes, stupid on my part for playing hurt since Houston, but thought it was just age." Needless to say, it's time to drop him in all formats.

After opening the Travelers Championship with a 4-over-par 39-34=74, Joe Ogilvie alerted his followers on Twitter that he may be done for the season due to a back injury.

Ogilvie tweeted: "Well shot 74, straight to hospital for MRI, herniated disk L5-S1. May have played my last round on the PGA Tour for 2012." Indeed, any back injury is serious for a golfer, so stay tuned. As of this moment, he hasn't officially withdrawn from the tournament, but there seems little reason that he'd even think about giving it a go on Friday. Ogilvie is fully exempt but currently sits 170th on the money list. Should he call it a year, he's likely qualify for a Major Medical Extension for 2013.

Joe Ogilvie had a U.S. Open to forget, and it came to an end with a final-round 9-over-par 79.

Playing in his fifth U.S. Open, Ogilvie watched his score increase with each round before adding it all up for a 23-over 303. In the final round, he looked to turn things around with a birdie at the first. That would be the only circle on his scorecard, as he would play the final 17 holes with 10 bogeys and seven pars. He will now try and put this behind him as he heads to the TPC River Highlands for the Travelers Championship.
