Chris Riley crafted a bogey-free, 7-under-par 35-30=65 in today's open qualifier for the Farmers Insurance Open at El Camino Country Club in Oceanside, Calif., good for a share of medalist honors.

Riley opened with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole and converted six more the rest of the way, five of which on his inward nine. Fellow PGA TOUR winner Chris Smith spun the same respective nines and also went bogey-free, but his walk featured five birdies before an eagle-3 at the eighth hole. Both golfers were mainstays at Torrey Pines when they were fully exempt, but Riley owns the better record thanks to three top 10s including a playoff loss in 2004. Former PGA TOUR member Will Strickler shot 6-under 32-34=66 with one eagle and six birdies against two bogeys to share third place with Riley Wheeldon (34-32=66; 1 eagle, 5 birdies, 1 bogey) and secure the other two berths into the tournament proper. The field at the FIO is now complete at 156.

Chris Riley will tee it up in the Valero Texas Open for the fourth year in a row, and his fifth start on TOUR in 2012.

Of those Valero starts, a T66 in the 2011 edition is his best finish. A T33 at the Farmers and a T49 at Mayakoba are all Riley has to show for his season to date. He ranks 27th in GIR and second in Strokes Gained-Putting, but finds plenty of trouble off the tee and he comes in at 182nd in total driving.

Chris Riley posted a 6-under-par 33-33=66 in his opening round of the Reno-Tahoe Open, finishing one back of the clubhouse lead.

The UNLV product claimed his only PGA TOUR victory here in 2002. He has just one top 25 this season, and that occurred at the Sony Open in mid-January; however, if he dissects Montreux over his final three rounds as well as he did today, he'll be in tremendous position for his second title. Riley hit 13 (of 14) fairways and 16 greens today. It paved the way for seven birdies, which co-led the field at the time he signed his card.

Chris Riley is 5-under-par 69-66=135 through two rounds of the AT&T National, good for the outright clubhouse lead.

Since a season-opening top 10 at the Sony Open, Riley has failed to post a top 25 in 14 starts. He's usually good for a couple of red-hot weeks with his putter, but it hasn't materialized. Until now. He's hit 22 greens in regulation and taken 51 putts, circling nine birdies through two loops of Aronimink. Four of today's five birdies found the cup from beyond 10 feet, including rolls of 21'5", 19'3" and 23'4" at the 10th, 12th and 17th holes, respectively. He also saved par from 13'8" at the third hole.

Chris Riley crafted a 6-under-par 33-33=66 in his opening round of the Memorial, finishing with sole possession of the clubhouse lead.

Riles earned our attention a week ago today when he opened the Byron Nelson with a bogey-free 66, only to fail to break par the rest of the week and settle for a T45 payday. He hasn't competed at Muirfield Village since 2002, hasn't made a cut in three appearances and hadn't broken par in his previous six rounds, so today's effort has anomaly written all over it. He hit 14 greens and took just 25 putts, circling eight birdies during his loop. Four of those birdies disappeared from beyond 10 feet, the longest of which was 20'3" at the 11th hole. He also rolled in a par save from 18'5" at the sixth.
