Mathias Grönberg was one of three golfers to survive a four-way playoff at the open qualifier into this week's Valero Texas Open.
Grönberg carded a 6-under-par 35-31=66 at The Club at Comanche Trace in Kerrville, Tex. He recorded an eagle-2 and six birdies to offset two bogeys. Zack Fischer (34-32=66; 7 birdies, 1 bogey) and James Shindler (34-32=66; 1 eagle, 5 birdies, 1 bogey) also clinched tee times at TPC San Antonio on Thursday. All outlasted Cole Howard (30-36=66; 8 birdies, 2 bogeys) in the playoff. Todd Baek was the medalist at bogey-free 33-32=65; he circled seven birdies. If he rings a bell, it's because you are probably recalling the 11-under 25 with which he opened a 60 on a course in California last September. The field for the VTO is now completed at 156. Mathias Gronberg carded an even-par 38-34=72 at Lake Caroline Golf Club in today's four-spotter for the True South Classic, seven strokes too high to force a playoff for the final berth into the tournament proper.

Gronberg was attempting to open qualify for the second consecutive week. After surviving the cut on the number at the John Deere Classic, he went on to finish T70 of 76 that completed 72 holes. Other notables that failed to qualify for the True South include: 66--Leif Olson ... 67--Bubba Dickerson ... 68--Eric Axley ... 69--Clark Dennis ... 70--Matthew Borchert ... 72--Sonny Skinner ... 78--Mike Heinen.

Mathias Gronberg spun a bogey-free, 7-under-par 32-32=64 at Pinnacle Country Club in Milan, Ill. in today's four-spotter for the John Deere Classic to earn one of the four berths at stake.

The former PGA TOUR member buried seven birdies to secure his first start on the circuit since last year's Reno-Tahoe Open. Randall Hutchison set the pace at Pinnacle with an 8-under 30-33=63 that included two eagles (one on a par 4) and five birdies. John Hurley (6-under 33-32=65) and Chad Proehl (6-under 34-31=65) locked up the last two tee times at TPC Deere Run on Thursday. Both carded an eagle, six birdies and two bogeys today. The field for the JDC is now complete at 156.

Mathias Gronberg on Monday was added to the field of the Honda Classic.

Gronberg gains entry into the field via a sponsor's exemption. He has played in three PGA tour events this season and is still looking for his first made cut on the season.

Mathias Gronberg carded a third round of 6-under-par 66 and is a four-way tie for the lead, with Justin Rose, Justin Leonard and George McNeill, at the Children's Miracle Network Classic.

Gronberg made the turn at 1-under-par for the round, but then came alive on the back nine with five birdies and no blemishes. He started the week in 190th place on the PGA Tour's Money List, but the reason for that is the amount Gronberg played on the Nationwide Tour, where he earned his PGA Tour card for next year with his 24th place on the Nationwide Tour's Money List. It is possible for Gronberg to make the Top 125 on the PGA Tour's Money List with a solo second place, but he will be thinking on Sunday of winning his first PGA Tour title and the two year exemption that comes with the championship.

Mathias Gronberg withdrew on Monday morning from the Frys.com Open.

Gronberg has played mostly on the Nationwide Tour in recent months and he is listed in the field of this week's Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island.

Mathais Gronberg carded a third round of 8-under-par 64 and is four shots off the lead at the Turning Stone Resort Championship.

The round of 64 tied the record for all-time low round in the Turning Stone Resort Championship. Gronberg has split time this season between the Nationwide and PGA Tours, and he came into this week ranked 194th on the PGA Tour's Money List. A good round on Sunday will greatly help him in his attempt to regain full playing privileges for the 2010 season.

Mathias Gronberg has been removed from the published field of this week's Legends Reno-Tahoe Open.

It was reported earlier this week that Gronberg was having visa problems in traveling from Canada, where he missed the cut at Glen Abbey two weeks ago. This likely explains his need to withdraw.

Mathais Gronberg withdrew on Tuesday from the Buick Open.

Gronberg has played on both the Nationwide and PGA Tours this season. He has played in the last three tournaments on the PGA Tour and made the cuts at the John Deere and U.B. Bank, but then he missed the cut at last week's Canadian Open.

Mathias Gronberg crafted a 4-under-par 33-33=66 in the opening round of the St. Jude Classic.

Four days after running away with the Nationwide Tour stop in Maryland, Gronberg returned to the (clubhouse) lead, albeit a share of it, in Memphis. He hit just 11 GIR but 25 putts minimized the damage to one bogey against five birdies. With the T-11 at the Texas Open, the Q School is already set for a considerable climb in the reshuffle even if he fades at the St. Jude.

Mathias Gronberg was added on Monday to the field of the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Gronberg made his first cut of the season last week when he finished in a tie for 11th place at the Valero Texas Open.
Mon, May 18, 2009 01:23:00 PM

Mathias Gronberg is 9-under-par 66-65=131 through two rounds of the Valero Texas Open.

Gronberg's round today included a 123-yard eagle-2 from the fairway on the 12th hole. He's landed 26 GIR and needed just 52 putts to clinch his first weekend on the 2009 PGA Tour and a share of the early clubhouse lead. Considering his recent foot injury, daily leagues should consider the risk of giving him a start on Saturday.

Mathias Gronberg posted a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round of the Athens Regional Foundation Classic on the Nationwide Tour.

Out of action anywhere since the Honda, Gronberg's rust was evident today. He hit just nine GIR and still amassed 30 putts. While he drained a healthy six birdies, he also carded five bogeys and a triple. If he doesn't crack the published field for next week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans, he'll be one of the first few alternates.

Mathias Gronberg is listed in the published field of next week's Athens Regional Foundation Classic.

Gronberg made no excuses on his web site for the 89 he scored to open the Honda Classic. However, the entry also indicates that he was going to play Puerto Rico, which he didn't do. He's recovering from a foot injury, so expect his game to be rusty. Gronberg is near the bottom of the Q School/Nationwide Tour reshuffle, so his impact on the PGA Tour in the short-term will be minimal.
