Scott Verplank began his 2014-15 PGA TOUR season by missing each of his three cuts.
Verplank is burning his final career earnings exemption, earned by ranking inside the top 50 on the career money list. His struggles this season have been relatively predictable. He made just one of 12 cuts in 2013-14 and hasn't so much as sniffed a top 25 on the PGA TOUR since his T4 at the 2011 PGA Championship. It's hard to imagine a format where he is a worthy investment. Scott Verplank missed the cut in The McGladrey Classic in 2013 and returns to the Seaside Course for the second time.

Verplank can thank his status in 2014-15 to the second of his two career earnings exemptions. In 12 events last season, he made just one cut. Unfortunately for the veteran, his trip to Sea Island wasn't one of them. He offers no real fantasy value this week.

Scott Verplank will be fully exempt on the 2014-15 PGA TOUR via a career earnings exemption.

This is the second consecutive season in which he's utilized this conduit to membership. Now 26th all-time, he could holster it for a few years if he wanted, but the five-time PGA TOUR winner seems ready to move on. Over his last three seasons, he's 7-for-35 with no better than a T40 at the 2013 RBC Canadian Open.

Scott Verplank returns to The Greenbrier Classic for the third time.

Verplank tied for 14th at The Old White TPC in 2011, then returned in 2013 to miss the cut. This season has been a disaster on the course for the veteran, making just one of 11 cuts, which was a T72 at the Sony Open. Not to worry. The Champions Tour is just around the corner, as he turns 50 on September 9th. He is playing this year on a career earnings exemption.

Scott Verplank has been removed from the published field of this week's HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Verplank is the all-time earnings leader of this week's stop in Texas. His only cut made in 10 starts this season was a T72/MDF at the Sony Open in Hawaii. While he's burning a career earnings exemption this season, his eyes are likely on Sept. 9 as that's when he'll turn 50 years of age.

Scott Verplank has been removed from the published field of this week's Shell Houston Open.

He had been dealing with a back injury prior to missing the cut at the Valero Texas Open by eight strokes. He's just 1-for-8 on the season with a T72/MDF at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Scott Verplank settled for a 4-over-par 37-39=76 in his opening round of the Valero Texas Open.

Verplank has not played since the Northern Trust Open where he withdrew after just eight hole due to a back injury. Today he hit just eight greens and squared five bogeys and one double to erase three birdies. He doesn't have any fantasy value as he approaches his 50th birthday on Sept. 9.
Mar 27 - 5:28 PM

Scott Verplank is listed in the published field of next week's Valero Texas Open.

We'll see. Since withdrawing during his opening round of the Northern Trust Open on Feb. 13, Verplank has committed to, and then withdrawn early from, two stops in Florida. He has our attention since he's fully exempt due to burning a career earnings exemption, but his 50th birthday on Sept. 9 can't arrive soon enough it seems. He hasn't posted a top 35 on the PGA TOUR since the 2011 PGA Championship.

Scott Verplank has withdrawn from this week's Valspar Championship.

The tournament's Twitter page cited injury for Verplank's decision. Indeed, the veteran hasn't played since the Northern Trust Open where he had to walk off Riviera after just eight holes with a back injury. He withdrew early from the Honda two weeks ago, too.

Scott Verplank is listed in the published field of next week's Valspar Championship.

He's been sidelined since a back injury knocked him out of the Northern Trust Open during his opening round. He's 1-for-3 at Copperhead with a solo 64th in 2006 and his only payday in seven starts this season is a T72/MDF at Waialae. That sets him up as prime-time duffer material for the Valspar.

Scott Verplank has been removed from the published field of this week's Honda Classic.

In his last start, he withdrew eight holes into the Northern Trust Open with a back injury. It's just the latest in a litany of injuries that have dogged his career. The five-time PGA TOUR winner turns 50 on Sept. 9, so he's in no hurry to return to competition even though he's burning a career earnings exemption this season.

Scott Verplank is listed in the published field of next week's Honda Classic.

A back injury forced the veteran out after only eight holes of last week's Northern Trust Open. He had ballooned to 10-over-par at the time. Verplank hasn't played the Honda since 2009 (T13) and he's cashed just one in his last nine starts entering the week (T72, Sony Open).

Scott Verplank withdrew from the Northern Trust Open during the opening round due to a back injury.

Verplank started on the par-4 10th hole and stood 10-over-par when he called it quits after a two-putt par at the par-5 17th. He opened with a quadruple bogey at 10 that included four swings from the greenside bunkers. He added two bogeys and two doubles.
Feb 13 - 12:57 PM

At even-par 71-67-72=210, Scott Verplank missed the 54-hole cut of the Sony Open in Hawaii on the number and settled for a share of 72nd place worth $10,696.00.

It ends an 0-for-5 skid, but he needed no worse than a solo second to retain his status in the Major Medical category where he fell short of meeting its terms by $542,741. Under normal circumstances, a golfer would be demoted into the category in which he has default status -- Verplank would tumble into the Past Champion/Beyond 150 category -- but he's elected to burn a career earnings exemption for 2013-14. That means that he'll actually climb from priority ranking No. 21 to No. 11. The possibility of meeting the terms of the medical was to delay the need for the earnings exemption. With those details out of the way, you can continue overlooking Verplank in all formats. He's committed to this week's Humana Challenge where he hasn't cashed in his last four tries.

Jan 12 - 11:05 PM

Scott Verplank is scheduled to burn the final start on his Major Medical Extension at this week's Sony Open in Hawaii.

Because the career of a golfer can span decades, it's not often that we're taken aback by the passage of time like we are in other sports where the ability to remain athletic enough to retain a job rarely stretches 20 years. Verplank turned professional in 1986 and has played Waialae in competition just once. That was in 1988, or 25 years ago. He missed the cut as a 23-year-old. Should he finish no lower than solo second (worth $604,800) this week, he'll meet the terms of his MME (needs $553,437). Short of that and he's going to burn a top-25 career earnings exemption. The five-time PGA TOUR winner sits 1,117th in the Official World Golf Ranking primarily due to a body that limits his ability to not only remain competitive, but busy.
