Davis Love III resumed his playing career with a 2-under-par 36-34=70 in his opening round of THE PLAYERS.
In what was his first live action since having neck surgery on Feb. 8, DL3 split seven (of 14) fairways and hit just 10 greens in regulation but managed to offset three bogeys with five birdies. His longest of the set fell in form 18 feet at 18, but he also converted a par attempt from 17'2" at the par-5 16th. May 9 - 6:20 PM

Davis Love III is listed in the published field of next week's PLAYERS.

DL3 had hoped to return to competition at this week's stop in Charlotte, but opted to wait until the PGA TOUR's flagship event at TPC Sawgrass. He's been outside ropes since withdrawing from the WM Phoenix Open on Feb. 1 with an injury to his neck. He underwent surgery seven days later. Although he's a two-time winner of THE PLAYERS (1992, 2003) and he's fared well at the event of late (T4, 2010; T12, 2011), give him a little time to shed the rust before considering him as a viable investment. Remember, he just turned 49 years old.

Davis Love III is not listed in the published field of next week's Wells Fargo Championship.

Love III has been sidelined since having neck surgery on Feb. 8. He had hoped to return this month. Earlier today, he alerted his followers on Twitter that he was going to test his body to determine if he'd be a go at Quail Hollow, writing: "Playing with @ZachJohnsonPGA and Mark Love today trying to see if I am ready for Charlotte next week!" Alas, he's not ready. DL3 is 0-for-3 this season. He turned 49 years of age on April 13. Consider him a question mark for THE PLAYERS on May 9-12.

As scheduled, Davis Love III underwent surgery on his neck today.

Love III kept active on Twitter today, both before and after his surgery, but a third party was responsible for this entry: "From Team DL3: Davis is now out of surgery and recovering. Doctor says surgery went very well! Thank you 4 all the well wishes." As we relayed on Wednesday, he expects to sit out 6-8 weeks.

Davis Love III will undergo surgery on his neck on Friday morning in Atlanta.

DL3 withdrew after one round of last week's WMPO due to ongoing issues with numbness and loss of strength. He had a cortisone shot on the opening day of the tournament. He then pulled out early of this week's stop at Pebble Beach. Dr. Regis Haid will perform the surgery after which the golfer will be able to start putting in just five days. Love III expects to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks. "I’ve been working around it and it’s been a nagging thing for a long time," he said. "The last three months it’s been more than a nagging thing, it’s just been a constant annoyance and needs to be fixed. ... It seems like the right time. I had to get out of the cycle. I wish I had done this five years ago."

Davis Love III has been removed from the published field of this week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am due to a neck injury.

He withdrew after one round last week in Scottsdale due to the same malady. This will be the first time he's missed the annual clambake on the Monterey Peninsula since he joined the PGA TOUR in 1986. (The 1996 edition was canceled.)

Davis Love III withdrew from the Waste Management Phoenix Open before his second round due to a neck injury.

DL3 was scheduled to go off first tee at TPC Scottsdale at 12:07 p.m. local time. He opened with a 1-over-par 36-36=72 that featured five birdies and six bogeys. This drops him to 0-for-3 on the young season. UPDATE: Look for him to attempt to return at next week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am where he's listed in the field that the PGA TOUR's media department released this afternoon.
Feb 1 - 11:30 AM

Davis Love III is in the field of the Waste Management Phoenix Open with two missed cuts on his 2013 resume.

While he failed to see the weekend in either event, DL3 improved from 10-over at the Sony Open to 8-under at the Humana Challenge. Considering his lofty standards, making 12 cuts in 16 events with just one top 10 in this event is modest at best. That's a pretty good indicator of what to expect this week. Don't be surprised if he sees the weekend, but don't expect to see him in contention.

With the Ryder Cup behind him, Davis Love III will return to focusing solely on playing golf in 2013.

DL3 has made 13 cuts and secured seven top 25s in each of the last two seasons. He had a chance to claim a win at the end of 2012 on his home course at Sea Island, Gerogia before a final-round 71, coupled with a hot Tommy Gainey, bumped him. Though long in the tooth, he was still 39th in driving distance in 2012. Don't be surprised if he mounts a big run late in his PGA TOUR career.

Davis Love III signed for a 1-over-par 35-36=71 in the final round of The McGladrey Classic to share fourth at 12-under 268 with Brendon de Jonge and D.J. Trahan at 12-under 268.

DL3 had to be a little shell shocked when he looked up to see that Tommy Gainey had hung a 60 on the board to post a 16-under, and was unable to get anything going in his own round. The Ryder Cup captain celebrated three birdies and squared two bogeys in his first 15 holes, but washed his tee shot in the water left on the 16th hole to end any chance he may have held at winning the tournament when the double-bogey six reached the cup. His 86.1 percent GIR were tied for second for the tournament.

Davis Love III is tied for the lead at 13-under-par 197 after spinning a 4-under-par 33-33=66 in the third round of the McGladrey Classic.

After posting a 65 and a 66 in the first two rounds respectively, DL3's kept his foot on the gas pedal in an event that is taking place in his back yard. He circled six birdies to two bogeys in his third tour of the Seaside Course, landing 17 GIR. His 1.66 putting average is second in the field and his 87 percent GIR is good for a share of third. A 13'6" birdie on the final hole vaulted him into a share of the lead with Jim Furyk, and gives him a shot at his first victory since the 2008 Children's Miracle Network Classic.

Davis Love III backed up his opening 65 at The McGladrey Classic with a 4-under-par 34-32=66 in his second round, reaching the midpoint in 9-under 131, one stroke adrift of the overnight lead.

He's the hostest with the mostest. For the second straight day, DL3 split 12 (of 14) fairways, hit 15 greens in regulation and buried six birdies at Seaside. Today's set included conversions from 10'8" and 26'1" at the 10th and 11th holes, respectively. The only difference today was that he needed an additional putt, amassing 29 in all, but he leads the field in putts per GIR at 1.633.

Davis Love III spun a 5-under-par 30-35=65 in his opening round of The McGladrey Classic, good for an early share of the clubhouse lead.

Gotta hand it the 48-year-old host of this tournament. He hasn't rested since his role as U.S. captain in the Ryder Cup, and here he is staking a number at Seaside. Love III split 12 (of 14) fairways and hit 15 greens en route to six birdies. The set included conversions from 19'6" at the 18th hole and 22'10" at 5. He suffered a lone bogey-5 at the first hole, but rattled in a par save from 10'7" at No. 8. DL3 has Lifetime Membership on the PGA TOUR, so he doesn't need to worry about status in 2013, but he's attempting to climb inside the top 100 on the money list for what would be the 27th consecutive season (circa 1986). He's currently 104th.

Davis Love III posted a 4-under-par 33-34=67 in his second round of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open to reach the midpoint in 7-under 135, three strokes back of the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

Love III came flying out of the gates today, dropping birdies at holes 10, 11 and 12 to set the tone. He'd roll in another from 11'11" at the 14th hole, and then save par from 11'10" at 15. After rinsing his approach into the par-4 18th and taking his drop, he chipped in for par. Respective birdies from 14'1" and 17 feet at the fifth and sixth holes followed. The U.S. Ryder Cup captain has missed just five greens in regulation through 36 holes.

Davis Love III has been added to the published field of this week's Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

DL3 was a late entry. He might enjoy the soft landing of a trip to Vegas following Sunday's historic defeat at the Ryder Cup. He last competed in the JT Shriners in 2010, finishing in a share of 28th place. As far as a motivation to compete this week, Love III has already met the membership minimum of 15 starts (he's made 16) and he owns a lifetime exemption on the PGA TOUR, so it's possible that he's doing Timberlake a favor since the entertainer was involved in the festivities at Medinah.
