Fred Couples has decided to jump down from the Champions Tour to compete in the Wyndham Championship with the flat bellies this week.
He went from 1993 to 2009 without playing this event, but tied for fifth in '09 at Sedgfield CC before missing the cut in 2010 and taking another sabbatical until this week. There doesn't appear to be any logical reason as to why he would tee it up this week. He ranks 214th in the FedExCup standings and, short of winning, wouldn't qualify for the Playoffs. Then again, he's Freddie Boom Boom and can do whatever he wants. Aug 13 - 3:13 PM

Fred Couples turned in a 1-over-par 38-35=73 in the third round of the Masters, and his 1-under 215 is only four off the lead with 18 to play.

Couples retreated early, with three bogeys to just one birdie on his outward nine. He made up some ground on the back nine at Augusta National, more than erasing his two bogeys with three birdies. There is no doubt that Couples will be the darling of the patrons in the final round. History isn't on his side, as no player in their 50s has ever won a major championship.

Fred Couples chased his opening, 1-under-par 71 at the Masters with another in the second round.

Couples turned in respective nines of 34 and 37 today. He rolled in four birdies, three of which on par 5s. Five of his seven birdies this week have come on the quartet of par 5s at Augusta National. He also squared three bogeys, but came to rest just five strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead. It's the second consecutive edition in which he's posted red numbers in the first two rounds, and the third time in the last four.

Fred Couples posted a 1-under-par 34-37=71 in his opening round of the 78th Masters.

Oh, the beauty of the sport of golf when even a 54-year-old former Masters champion can make noise in the opening round. Couples landed 14 greens in regulation and converted three birdies, including a left-to-right, long-range bender at the par-4 fifth. He bogeyed 12 and 17. It's the fourth time in five editions that he's signed for a red number on Thursday, a feat he achieved only six times in his first 25 trips. This week marks his 30th appearance.

Fred Couples is no longer a PGA TOUR regular, but that hasn't stopped him from experiencing post-50 success at the Masters of late.

Boom Boom was born for Augusta National, cracking the top 15 in each of his last four trips after turning 50. While a balky back has limited his run up to this week, it may not matter. It's not like he doesn't know his way around the place. Couples has missed just two cuts in 29 trips, cracking the top 10 on 11 occasions with three top-three finishes. He is a prime candidate for selections in certain fantasy formats this week.

There are few events left on the PGA TOUR schedule that Fred Couples still frequents, but count the Northern Trust Open as one of them.

Riviera Country Club holds massive appeal to the veteran, twice winning this event and thrice finishing runnner-up. While he needs a sponsor exemption just to compete, how could they not award one to the guy who's missed this stop just one time since 1982. He's not just taking up a spot in the field either. Couples tied for third here in 2009 and shared seventh in 2011.

Fred Couples will make a PGA TOUR appearance at this week’s Memorial.

It was announced today that Couples will be paired for the first two rounds with Tiger Woods and Keegan Bradley, so here’s hoping Woods’ caddy Joe LaCava doesn’t have a flashback and reach for Couples’ bag. Couples was the winner at Muirfield Village in 1998, and also posted back-to-back runner-ups in 2004 and 2005. He’s made two starts on the big stage in 2013, sharing 46th at Riviera and nabbing a T13 at Augusta National.

Fred Couples ended the Masters with a 1-under-par 36-35=71, finishing the week at 1-under 287.

Couples had three outstanding rounds at the Masters, but a third-round 77 while playing with Jason Day in the final pairing on Saturday ruined his week. It will mark the fourth consecutive year that he's posted a top-15 finish.

Fred Couples backed up his opening 68 at the Masters with a 1-under-par 37-34=71 in the second round to stake outright possession of the 36-hole clubhouse lead at 5-under 139.

The ageless wonder hit 12 greens in regulation today but didn't clinch the red number until a birdie at the par-4 18th hole. Prior to that, he rolled in birdies at Nos. 3, 6, 8 and 12 that offset bogeys at the first and fourth holes as well as a double at the par-4 seventh. Couples shared the 36-hole lead with Jason Dufner last year before fading to finish T12. (Dufner placed T24.)

Fred Couples posted a 4-under-par 34-34=68 in his opening round of the Masters.

Despite his 53 years of age, Couples is a legitimate threat at Augusta National every year; well, as long as his back doesn't lock up. Today he hit just 10 greens in regulation but limited the damage to a pair of bogeys. Meanwhile, he picked off six birdies, including on each of the first three par 5s (holes 2, 8 and 13), and signed his card sitting only two strokes adrift of the clubhouse co-leaders.

Fred Couples returns to the Masters as one of the perennial favorites of the patrons.

Couples won his only major at Augusta National in 1992. To say he’s unlocked the key to kingdom would be putting it mildly. He’s made 26 of his 28 cuts, including his first 23, and has been inside the top 15 each of the last three years despite playing full time on the Champions Tour lately.

Fred Couples carded a 3-under-par 34-34=68 in his opening round of the Northern Trust Open, finishing four strokes off the clubhouse lead.

Couples is renown for returning to courses on the PGA TOUR that he loves. Riviera and Augusta National sit 1 and 1a on that list, so it's never a surprise when he plays well at either. The 53-year-old hit 13 greens today and offset two bogeys with three birdies. His most notable conversion was a zero-putt birdie from eight yards just off the green at 18. His longest conventional birdie dropped in from 14 feet at 14.

Fred Couples returns to one of his favorite stops on the PGA TOUR for the Northern Trust Open.

Boom Boom nearly pulled out a win in 2009, before settling for a share of third, and contended again with a T7 in 2011. His 30 previous starts in this tournament give him 111 rounds of local knowledge. In those, he has two wins, three runner-ups and a third. Much like Augusta National, you can't count Freddie out on Riviera CC.

Fred Couples was officially announced as the captain for the United States in the 2013 Presidents Cup.

Couples is 2-0 at the helm, winning at Harding Park in 2009, then again at Royal Melbourne last November. The 2013 edition will be contested at Muirfield Vilage on Oct. 3-6. "It's an amazing honor to be selected to serve as U.S. Team captain again in 2013," said Couples, who owned a 9-5-2 record as a competitior from 1994-2005. "It's safe to say that The Presidents Cup has been a huge part of my career and my life from playing in four events to my experiences in 2009 and 2011 as captain."

Fred Couples withdrew from THE PLAYERS today due to an illness.

Couples also withdrew early from last week's Champions Tour stop due to the flu. He qualified for THE PLAYERS when he won last year's Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship. It is an exemption that bumps the field to 145, so it does not warrant an alternate. The field will max out at 144 now. Because the 52-year-old is no longer a full-time member of the PGA TOUR, we will leave him off our Injury Report.
