Todd Hamilton is the latest to win at Royal Troon Golf Club, host of the 145th Open Championship, and returns this week for a chance to defend that title.
Hamilton arrived at Royal Troon for the 2004 Open Championship ranked 34th on the money list, winning the Honda Classic earlier in the season to help that total. He was also 56th in the Official World Golf Ranking at the time of his victory at Royal Troon that season. Despite his moderate rankings at the time, he's still largely seen as an out-of-the-blue winner. In large part due to his career performance after the win, posting just one finish inside the top 30 in major championships since (28 starts). In the Open Championship, specifically, he's made the return trip every year since and is 3-for-11 over that stretch, a T32 in 2008 being the best. Spending his time on the Champions Tour now, Hamilton is a long shot to contend this week, but perhaps this historic venue can spark up some old memories and kick his game into gear for a few rounds. Todd Hamilton has gained entry into this week's John Deere Classic via a sponsor exemption.

The native of Galesburg, Illinois, has played in every edition of the JDC since 2004 when he won The Open Championship. So, he'll be making his yearly trip to the U.K. for the season's third major once his work is done at TPC Deere Run. In his only previous start on the PGA TOUR this season, the 49-year-old missed the cut in Puerto Rico.

Todd Hamilton makes his first start of the 2014-15 PGA TOUR season at the Puerto Rico Open.

Hamilton has been relegated to Past Champion status, and is likely playing with one eye on the Champions Tour. He turns 50 on October 18th of this year. He tied for 12th in his last trip to Trump International Golf Club-Puerto Rico in 2012, but overall has missed half of his four cuts. His last start came on the Tour in the Colombia Championship where he missed the cut.

Todd Hamilton has been added to the published field of this week's Wyndham Championship.

Hamilton started the week as the 10th alternate. He gained entry following two withdrawals today. He had planned to play the Tour this week, but he'll give it a go in his fourth PGA TOUR start of the season, all within the last six weeks. He's just 1-for-5 at Sedgefield with a T24 in 2009.

Todd Hamilton followed his opening 64 at the John Deere Classic with a 2-under-par 33-36=69 in the second round to post 9-under 133, three strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

In the global perspective, this was a reassuring day for the 48-year-old. It would have been understandable if not expected if he blew up for a score in the mid-70s given how little competition action he's seen at the game's highest level. Instead, he traded four birdies with two bogeys. At the time he signed his card he ranked inside the top 15 in both greens in regulation and strokes gained-putting.

Todd Hamilton opened the John Deere Classic with a bogey-free, 7-under-par 32-32=64, good for very early possession of the clubhouse lead.

Talk about capitalizing on getting the last sponsor exemption. Hamilton went out in the second threesome off the 10th tee at TPC Deere Run today. He'd go on to hit 16 greens in regulation and convert seven times for birdie. Three of his rolls stretched longer than 11 feet, the longest measuring 18'9" at the par-3 seventh hole. This was his first round of the 2013-14 season. It's his first red number since a second-round 70 at last year's Open Championship and equals his career low on the PGA TOUR first set in the third round of the 2008 Open.

Todd Hamilton has been added to the published field of this week's John Deere Classic.

The Illinois native received the last sponsor exemption into the tournament. He's competed in every edition since 2004. Hamilton made his PGA TOUR debut in it as an amateur in 1986 (when it was contested at Oakwood Country Club). He hasn't played a PGA TOUR event since last year's Reno-Tahoe Open, instead giving it a go on the Tour where he's just 2-for-9 in 2014.

Todd Hamilton has been added to the published field of this week's Reno-Tahoe Open.

Hamilton was one of three alternates to receive a tee time at Montreux this week due to a smattering of withdrawals. He's also scheduled to compete in the Tour's Mylan Classic, but his chances of cracking the top 200 in FedExCup points (currently 251st with one point) versus the top 75 in Tour earnings (162nd) are equally as difficult.

Todd Hamilton signed for a 2-under-par 36-33=69 following his opening round of The Open Championship.

The 2004 Open champion hadn't broken par in this tournament since a second-round 71 at Royal Liverpool in 2006, and he hadn't gone sub-70 since closing out his title at Royal Troon with a 69. Today Hamilton split nine (of 14) fairways and hit 13 greens in regulation en route to four birdies against two bogeys. He's three swings adrift of the clubhouse lead.

Todd Hamilton returns to Illinois for the John Deere Classic.

While he now resides in Texas, Hamilton was born in Galesburg, Illinois and has played in every edition of the event at TPC Deere Run dating back to 2004. During those stops, he's cracked the top 30 on six occasions. His only previous PGA TOUR start this year was a missed cut at Pebble Beach.

Todd Hamilton opened the WNB Golf Classic on the Tour with a bogey-free, 6-under-par 34-32=66, good for a piece of the overnight lead.

The 47-year-old is biding his time in Europe in and around pop-up starts on the PGA TOUR and now a growing schedule on the Tour for which the WNB marks his third event of the season. Prior to a T21 in Panama in February, he hadn't played the developmental circuit since it was known as the Ben Hogan Tour in 1991. Today at Midland (Tex.) Country Club, he circled three birdies each on par 4s and par 5s. Thanks to his lone payday in Panama -- he missed the cut in Colombia the following week -- he's entered the week at 110th on the money list.

Todd Hamilton has been added to the published field of this week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Hamilton was the sixth alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry as the final alternate when five other withdrew today. He hasn't cashed in his last four appearances at this tournament.

Todd Hamilton has been added to the published field of this week's McGladrey Classic.

Hamilton was the eighth alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon, and he climbed to third alternate after today's field changes, but he was given the last sponsor exemption into the tournament. He finished second-to-last at CordeValle on Sunday. Now 180th on the money list, the two-time PGA TOUR winner will turn 47 years of age on Thursday.

Todd Hamilton has been added to the published field of this week's Open.

Hamilton was the second alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon, but there was only one withdrawal this morning, which Joe Durant filled, so Hamilton likely received the final sponsor exemption. He's split time on the PGA TOUR (eight starts) with starts in Europe and Asia this year. Overall, he's 5-for-17. Both of his top 25s were on the PGA TOUR where he ranks 178th in earnings.

Todd Hamilton added 7 points in the final round of the Reno-Tahoe Open to finishe the week inside the top 10 with 30 points.

Hamilton found four birdies to just one bogey in his final trip around Montreux Golf & Country Club. His 11 GIR resulted in 26 putts. This week marks the first time he's cracked a top 10 since the 2009 Heritage where he tied for fourth.
