Ryuji Imada scratched out a 4-under-par 33-33=66 in his opening round of the Wyndham Championship, good for outright possession of the early clubhouse lead.
Imada went out in the second threesome off the first tee at Sedgefield today and promptly buried a birdie from 10'3" at the par-4 opener. He'd hit only 10 greens in regulation during his walk, but suffered just one bogey after missing the green well left at the par-3 seventh. Elsewhere, he added four birdies, including rolls of 13'11" and 14'3" at Nos. 3 and 16, respectively. At 195th in the FedExCup standings upon arrival, he'd probably need to win to qualify for the Playoffs, but today all but secured a berth in the Web.com Tour Finals, which was the primary objective. Ryuji Imada has secured just his third start of the 2013-14 PGA TOUR season at the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Considering he's playing on Past Champion status, his ability to sneak into the field most weeks is limited to open qualifiers. Fortunately for him, his deep number was called this week. At 191st in the FedExCup standings, his first priority is earning enough FEC points to hold on to a spot in the top 200 for a berth in the Web.com Finals. He's made each of his two cuts this season, with a T20 at the Sony Open the highlight.

Ryuji Imada was granted a sponsor exemption into the Sony Open this week.

Imada has been relegated to Past Champion status after failing to finish inside the top 125 on the PGA TOUR money list or the FedExCup standings in 2013. In 10 previous trips to Waialae Country Club, he has made the cut on eight occasions and finished inside the top 25 twice. While his starts will be limited, the good news is that any money he earns or FedExCup points he accumulates will be considered official.

Ryuji Imada posted a 5-under-par 34-31=65 at Monterey Peninsula Country Club's Shore Course in his opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Ryuji Imada has been a staple on the PGA TOUR since his 2005 rookie season, but he needs a push at The McGladrey Classic this week if he hopes to avoid a trip to Q School for the first time since becoming a member.

Imada enters the week 184th on the money list, with his best finish of the season a tie for 10th at the True South Classic. In the Fall Series, he missed the cut at the Justin Timberlake and tied for 64th at the Frys.com Open last week. He enters Sea Island an impressive 32nd in Strokes Gained-Putting, but his 170th ranking in GIR means he isn’t getting that many chances to let his putter shine. He’s twice played the Seaside Course, but has yet to make the cut.
