Gavin Coles is 8-under-par 67-65=132 through 36 holes of The McGladrey Classic, two strokes adrift of the overnight lead.
The Aussie ranks second-to-last (of 189) in distance off the tee, so Seaside's cozy confines don't overwhelm his game. Coles has been steady thus far, circling 10 birdies thanks to 31 chances. He rolled in six birdies today, four of which from 10 feet or longer, the highlight of the bunch dropping in from 18'2" at the first hole. Overall on the year, he's 11-for-21 with one top 25; he ranks 179th on the money list. Fri, Oct 19, 2012 07:04:00 PM

Date:

Gavin Coles is slated to play the Frys.com Open at CordeValle Golf Club.

Because Coles ranks 185th in driving distance, there are only so many tournaments where his lack of length allows him to be competitive. CordeValle could be one of those courses, as putting tends to take center stage. Ranking 44th in driving accuracy and 17th in Strokes Gained-Putting, the Aussie hopes to have a peek at enough birdie putts to make up some ground on the money list. He currently ranks 176th in earnings with $214,413.

Gavin Coles backed up his opening 65 at the RBC Canadian Open with a 1-under-par 36-33=69 in his second round to post 6-under 134, good for very early possession of the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

The lead won't last, but it's certainly better than the alternative. The Aussie rolled in a par save from 15'9" at the 10th hole, and then chased it with a 12-footer for birdie at 12. Otherwise, the value is in his consistency and damage control. Through 36 holes, he's missed 10 greens in regulation but has carded just one bogey. He needs a good week in the worst way. While he's cashed in 10 of 16 starts this season, the journeyman hasn't posted a top 25 on the PGA TOUR since July 2008.

Gavin Coles carded a bogey-free, 5-under-par 32-33=65 in his opening round of the RBC Canadian Open, finishing two strokes off the clubhouse lead.

Coles hit 14 greens in regulation and rolled in five birdies in his first loop of Hamilton Golf & Country Club. His longest conversion measured 12'9" at the eighth hole. He was the sixth to sign for a 65, but the only to do so without at least one over-par hole. (Leader Greg Owen also failed to go bogey-free en route to his 63.)

Gavin Coles has made his share of cuts, but needs a high finish at the John Deere Classic to boost his hopes of retaining his TOUR card for 2013.

The Aussie has cashed in nine of his 14 events including a season-best T27 at The Greenbrier Classic last week. His payday at The Old White TPC was his sixth consecutive. Despite that, he currently ranks 181st on the money list. To contend at this week's tour of TPC Deere Run, he will need to rely on the flat stick that has him ranked 14th in Strokes Gained-Putting.

Gavin Coles made his fourth consecutive cut at the FedEx St. Jude Classic and posted a 1-over-par 38-33=71 in the third round.

The Aussie got off to a rocky start, making bogeys on the fourth, fifth and sixth holes before rebounding to birdie the 12th and 16th holes coming in. He held on and posted that 71 despite only finding seven GIR. He enters the final round at 3-over 213 and has work to do to top his season-best T38 at the Sony Open.

Gavin Coles carded an even-par 38-34=72 in his opening round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Coles split 13 (of 14) fairways but landed only 11 greens in regulation, trading two bogeys on his first nine with two birdies coming in. He was suffering from a hand injury in San Antonio last week where he missed the cut.

Gavin Coles turned in a pair of 3-over-par 75s at the Valero Texas Open and will miss the cut.

The Aussie hit 23 greens but needed 62 putts during his two loops of TPC San Antonio. While he was waiting out the weather delay, he posted the following on Twitter: "What an unbelievable year I am having, I hit one bad drive and in the rocks it goes, chip it out, hurt my hand and can hardly hold the club." Indeed, he's now 3-for-8 with no top-35 finishes. He arrived at the VTO ranked 185th in FedExCup Points. Given his tweet, we'll add him to our Injury Report to follow. If his hand is able, Coles will put it in play at next week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans where he's listed in the published field.

Gavin Coles has been added to the published field of this week's Shell Houston Open.

Coles was the third alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry due to three withdrawals this morning. Not only has the Aussie cashed in both of his starts at Redstone's Tournament Course, but he enters having survived his last two cuts of this season, a not-too-insignificant fact given he's a mere 3-for-6 on the year.

Gavin Coles shot a 3-under-par 34-35=69 in his opening round of the Puerto Rico Open, finishing two strokes back of the clubhouse lead.

Since regaining his PGA TOUR card this year, Coles has gone 2-for-5 with zero top 35-finishes, so they're not quite dancing in the streets of his native Australia just yet. In fact, he scored with smoke and mirrors today, swallowing just one bogey despite hitting only nine greens in regulation.

Gavin Coles posted a 4-under-par 34-34=68 at Torrey Pines North in his opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open.

It's barely noteworthy but Coles withdrew during his suspended third round at last week's Humana. He wasn't going to make the cut anyway but we never take anything for granted when it comes to mid-round WDs. Today he hit 15 greens and rolled in six birdies, three of which on par 5s.

Galvin Coles withdrew during his third round of the Humana Challenge.

Coles was 1-over-par through 12 holes at PGA West's Nicklaus Private Course when he withdrew. He was an aggregate 2-over and wasn't going to make the cut. He'll try at this week's Farmers Insurance Open.

The Aussie started the week as the fifth alternate. He gained entry when Alex Cejka withdrew today. Coles finished T38 at last week's Sony Open where he carded a bogey-free 66 in the second round. He'll be making his debut at PGA West.

Gavin Coles was added to the field of the Valero Texas Open on Monday morning.

Coles has played on the Nationwide and PGA Tours this season. His best finish on the PGA Tour this season is a T-8 at the Stanford St. Jude and on the Nationwide Tour he won the Chitimacha Louisiana Open.

Gavin Coles carded a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round of the Reno-Tahoe Open.

One week, he shoots a 62 in Milwaukee; the next, he withdraws in Canada with a bum elbow. Coles striped it off the tee today, hitting 12 (of 14) fairways, but couldn't score, taking 30 putts and bookending his round with four bogeys.
