Scott Gutschewski is 5-under-par 69-70=139 at the midpoint of the Wells Fargo Championship, just three strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead.
Gutschewski medaled at the open qualifier on Monday, so he's had everything to gain at Quail Hollow Club. That he's executing against stiffer competition is the surprise. He's found only 12 (of 28) fairways but had landed 25 greens in regulation. In terms of scoring, the big fella has offset four bogeys with nine birdies, including a conversion from 20'5" at the par-5 seventh hole today. Gutschewski is a non-member, so short of a win, he's chasing non-member FedExCup points to contribute to his total to qualify for the Tour Finals. May 15 - 2:02 PM

Scott Gutschewski turned in a 7-under-par 35-30=65 at Rocky River Golf Club in Concord, North Carolina, in today's open qualifier for the Wells Fargo Championship, good for medalist honors.

The former PGA TOUR member sat birdie-free 1-over through six holes before turning on the afterburners. He collected eight birdies the rest of the way, including five in a row opening his inward nine at the par-4 first hole. Gutschewski hasn't pegged it on the PGA TOUR since 2011; he hasn't competed in TOUR-sanctioned action since June 2013 on the Tour. Former University of Michigan standout Matt Thompson shared runner-up honors today with a 6-under 34-32=66. He circled a pair of eagle-3s and added three birdies to hide one bogey. He'll be making his TOUR debut this week, as will Penn State product Travis Howe (6-under 35-31=66; 7 birdies, 1 bogey). Andres Echavarria gobbled up the last spot with a 6-under 34-32=66. He also traded seven birdies with one bogey. The trio of runners-up survived a five-way playoff that included former TOUR members Mathew Goggin and Brad Adamonis. The field at Quail Hollow is now complete at 156.

The former PGA TOUR member converted two eagles and 18 birdies and swallowed only two bogeys all week. Scott Dunlap was the runner-up at 19-under 269 (one eagle, 20 birdies, three bogeys). Also included among the 21 golfers that survived a loaded site were Steven Bowditch (270), Peter Tomasulo (272), Paul Stankowski (273), Matt Jones (273), Kyle Reifers (274), James Nitties (274), Tag Ridings (275), Jeff Klauk (276), Todd Hamilton (276), Brenden Pappas (276), Alex Prugh (276) and Kevin Tway (277). Scott Gutschewski fired a five-under 67 in the third round and moved into a tie for third place at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Gutschewski dropped in seven birdies (to go with two bogeys) and at -9 is tied with second-round leader Mark Calcavecchia in what is proving to be a spelling nightmare. Gutschewski has never won on the PGA and is a big fantasy surprise this week, having missed four cuts in five starts in 2007. He is just three strokes behind leader Nick Watney going into Sunday's final round.

Scott Gutschewski has moved from the alternate list to the field in the Sony Open.

Gutschewski had two top tens in 19 tournaments last year. He only made the cut 7 out of 19 tournaments but he still was able to end up 167th on the money list. His 22nd place finish in Q-School earned him his tour card for 2007. Gutschewski has no history at the Sony.
