Past champ Robert Gamez is at Bay Hill Club and Lodge for his 27th consecutive appearance in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
The Orlando resident hasn't played a full season on any tour in eight years, but he's made every Palmer Invite start since winning the 1990 edition in his tourney debut. At the 1990 edition, he played his final five holes in 4-under, including a 7-iron hole-out for eagle-2 on the 72nd hole to shock Greg Norman by one. Gamez' last full season was in 2008, where he made 26 starts, missing 13 cuts, and incidentally, was the last year he played all four rounds at Bay Hill, finishing T68. The 47-year-old's last paycheck of any kind was a T39 at the 2013 Reno-Tahoe Open and his last event was a missed cut seven months ago at the Barracuda Championship. Gamez had quadruple bypass surgery in June of 2014. Wed, Mar 16, 2016 02:51:00 PM

Robert Gamez has gained entry into this week's Barracuda Championship.

He started the week no higher than 17th alternate, but the door opened when Ben Curtis withdrew. (It helped that 10 previous alternates turned down spots over the last two days.) Gamez' last paycheck on the PGA TOUR came at Montrêux in 2013 when he tied for 39th place. He's 0-for-4 and hasn't broken 75 in eight rounds since, but he'll just be happy to be out there this week. It's been just over 13 months since the three-time PGA TOUR winner had quadruple bypass surgery. He turned 47 years of age on July 21.

Robert Gamez has joined the field of 132 at the Puerto Rico Open.

Gamez started the week as the 12th alternate. He gained entry when John Peterson withdrew today. This will be Gamez' first competition since having quadruple bypass surgery late last June. The two-time PGA TOUR winner last cashed on the PGA TOUR at the 2013 Barracuda Championship.
Wed, Mar 4, 2015 11:31:00 AM reported that three-time PGA TOUR winner Robert Gamez has quadruple bypass surgery in Orlando on Wednesday.

"It was definitely unexpected," Gamez' manager, Paul Graham of Empire Sports Management said. The 45-year-old golfer struggled breathing on the weekend. He hasn't played the TOUR full-time since losing his card following the 2008 season. In his only start this season, he missed the cut at Bay Hill, site of his second victory when he eagled the 72nd hole to clip Greg Norman by one stroke. Because he's played sparingly on Past Champion status, we will leave Gamez off our Injury Report.

Robert Gamez returns to the site of his 1990 Arnold Palmer Invitational win for this year's edition.

To put it into perspective, Gamez made just three starts in 2013 and this marks his first of 2013-14. That is to say he's playing only with Past Champion status. He is the only player to conquer the field at Bay Hill in his first attempt since 1980. He hasn't made the cut here since 2008, so there is virtually no value attached to him in any format.

Robert Gamez has been added to the published field of this week's Reno-Tahoe Open.

The three-time PGA TOUR winner received a sponsor exemption into the field at Montreux. He's 1-for-2 on the PGA TOUR this season with a T65 at Annandale two weeks ago, but perhaps he can rekindle form this week. His only top-45 finish since 2009 was a T5 at the 2010 RTO. Gamez turned 45 years of age last week.

Robert Gamez is returning to Bay Hill for his 24th Arnold Palmer Invitational.

None have been as rewarding as his first, winning the event in 1990. In fact, success here has been scant since that win, missing 15 cuts in his 23 starts with only one other top 10. His trend is equally concerning, missing the cut in this event every year since 2008.

Robert Gamez has been added to the published field of this week's FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Gamez was the ninth alternate at the start of the week. He gained entry when eight golfers withdrew this morning. He's 2-for-5 on the PGA TOUR this year with no top 55s. The last time he played in Memphis, he missed the cut in 2008.

Robert Gamez has been added to the published field of this week's Valero Texas Open.

Gamez was the first alternate when the field was published on Friday. He gained in this morning's wave of four withdrawals. He's 1-for-3 this season with a T58 in Puerto Rico. Stuck in the Past Champions category, he has zero fantasy value.

Robert Gamez has been added to the published field of this week's Puerto Rico Open.

He went out in 1-over-par 37 in today's four-spotter but won't need an exemption via the open qualifier. Gamez was the ninth alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry on a sponsor exemption this morning. He's 0-for-2 at this event and 0-for-1 (Mayakoba) in 2012.
Mon, Mar 5, 2012 11:06:00 AM

Robert Gamez has been added to the published field of this week's Mayakoba Golf Classic.

Gamez started the week as the 10th alternate. He moved up to ninth when Mark Calcavecchia withdrew as an alternate, and then gained entry when Brett Quigley withdrew today. Gamez missed the cut on the Nationwide Tour last week. The 43-year-old has cashed just four times in his last 28 starts on the PGA TOUR.

Robert Gamez was added on Monday to the field of the Reno-Tahoe Open.

Gamez started the week as the seond alternate into this week's field. It's been a rough year for Gamez, who has only two made cuts in eight starts on this year's TOUR.
Mon, Aug 1, 2011 10:27:00 AM

Robert Gamez was added to the published field of this week's RBC Canadian Open.

After Alex Cejka withdrew earlier today, Gamez rose to second alternate, but first alternate, Mark Hensby, declined a berth to play in the Nationwide Tour event in Ohio. (Craig Barlow and Daniel Chopra also withdrew as alternates; they're also in the field on the developmental circuit.) Gamez withdrew 35 holes into last week's Viking when inclement weather suspended play for good on Friday. He wasn't going to make the cut, and is now 2-for-7 on the PGA TOUR this season out of the Past Champions category. NOTE: Kirk Triplett and Steve Lowery also withdrew as alternates in Vancouver.
Wed, Jul 20, 2011 02:11:00 PM

Robert Gamez withdrew during his second round of the Viking Classic.

The veteran completed 35 holes in an aggregate 5-over-par when the horn sounded this afternoon. He had just hit his approach at the par-4 ninth hole to 15'7" and had the chance to bury a third consecutive birdie, but he wasn't going to make the cut, so he called it quits. Today's round already included seven birdies but he was only 1-under due to four bogeys and a double. He suffered five bogeys and two double in his opening 78.

Robert Gamez has been added to the published field of this week's John Deere Classic.

Gamez was the seventh alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry today when Carl Paulson withdrew. Gamez is 2-for-5 on the PGA TOUR this year. He's made 20 consecutive starts at the JDC but hasn't cashed in his last five.
