John Mallinger is not listed in the published field of next week's FedEx St. Jude Classic.
Mallinger hasn't teed it up since missing the cut at the RBC Heritage. Thanks to a reader, we were alerted to a photo published by one of his sponsors, Travis Mathew, on May 1. It it, Mallinger is smiling with his left arm in a sling. His right hand has what appears to be a bandage (assumingly for an IV) and there's what may be a hospital band around his right wrist. (There's no reason to believe that the image has been inadvertently flipped.) Then, on May 19, Travis Mathew posted a photo on Twitter of Mallinger with his wife and newborn child, a boy. It is the couple's first. What remains unknown is why Mallinger needed a sling, what he injured and how long he'll be sidelined. He's ranked 164th in FedExCup points. May 31 - 7:01 PM

John Mallinger turns his attention to the Shell Houston Open struggling to polish off a solid finish.

Mallinger has made six of his last seven cuts, but has yet to end a week inside the top 30. Illustrating this, he ranks 148th in third round scoring average and 159th in the final round. At 168th in all-around ranking, he’s struggling to find a strength on which to hang his hat. A T6 in 2009 highlights a checkered record at Redstone.

John Mallinger crafted a 5-under-par 36-30=66 in his second round of the Northern Trust Open.

After erasing a birdie at the easy par-5 first hole with two bogeys, Mallinger made the turn in 1-over. Then the nitrous kicked in. He rolled in six birdies and three pars coming home, including running the table with birdies beginning at 15. The longest conversions of the lot measured 17'9" at the 11th and 22'1" at No. 16. He's 5-under 137, four back of the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

John Mallinger will step on the first tee at TPC Scottsdale for the Waste Management Phoenix Open with history and form against him.

Mallinger has made just one of three cuts in 2013, a T78 at last week's Farmers Insurance Open. One could wonder why he even bothers making the trip to Phoenix, with three missed cuts and a 69th in four previous trips. The advice here is to step away until he shows a reason to be optimistic or reaches a course where he's shown strength in the past.

John Mallinger earned the second runner-up of his career in the 2012 Humana Challenge, riding his early-season success to the 86th position on the PGA TOUR money list.

Mallinger added a fourth at the Reno-Tahoe Open and a share of fourth at the Frys.com Open. Ranking 16th in driving accuracy and 54th in GIR in 2012, his accuracy will give him chances to be in the mix often. It all comes down to how his putter behaves.

John Mallinger has been removed from the published field of this week's McGladrey Classic.

Mallinger held the 36- and 54-hole leads at last week's Frys.com Open before fading on Sunday with a 72 to settle for a share of fourth place. He rose to 78th on the money list as a result. NOTE: Lee Janzen also withdrew as an alternate. Janzen will compete on the Web.com Tour this week instead.

John Mallinger held the 54-hole lead at the Frys.com Open, but struggled to a 1-over-par 38-34=72 in the final round to settle into a tie for fourth at 14-under 270.

Mallinger was clearly uncomfortable as a leader, squaring five birdies on his opening nine to just two birdies. He would recover to circle three birdies to just one bogey on the inward nine, but the damage was done. Though he putted to a 1.50 average in the final round, he found just 10 GIR. His 1.625 putting average was good for third in the field. He now heads to Sea Island, Georgia for The McGladrey Classic.

John Mallinger heads into the final round of the Frys.com Open at 15-under-par 198, sporting a two-stroke lead after posting a 1-under 36-34=70 in the third round.

After going blemish-free for his first 38 holes, Mallinger swallowed his first bogey on the par-3 third hole. After bouncing back with a birdie on the fifth, he squared his final bogey of the day on the par-4 eighth. After knocking an approach stiff on the par-4 13th to once again bring his round back to even, he reached red numbers for the first time with a 2-putt birdie on the par-5 15th. He struggled with the irons, finding just 10 GIR which was six less than he landed in the second round. Scrambling has been a key, as he is tied for first in putts per round. Tonight will mark the second time that Mallinger has slept on the lead, the first coming at the 2009 HP Byron Nelson where he would eventually finish sixth.

John Mallinger tied the course record at CordeValle Golf Club in his second round of the Frys.com Open, spinning a bogey-free, 9-under-par 32-30=62 to earn sole possession of the overnight lead at 14-under 128.

A nearly flawless exhibition by the 33-year-old today. He split all 14 fairways, hit 16 greens and totaled just 26 putts. After a five-birdie opener, he rolled in seven more today and added an eagle. Five of his par breakers today measured 11 feet or longer, the most notable of the bunch a 23'7" conversion at the par-3 11th hole. Through 36 holes, he's split 22 (of 28) fairways, hit 28 greens and taken just 52 putts. The 62 matches his career low on the PGA TOUR (accomplished twice previously). He's the fourth to own a share of the course record. Nick O'Hern was the most recent; he turned the trick just yesterday. Mallinger will sleep on a four-stroke margin.

John Mallinger spun a bogey-free, 5-under-par 33-33=66 in his opening round of the Frys.com Open, finishing one stroke off the clubhouse lead.

Mallinger last played CordeValle in 2010 and placed T18. He's coming off a T22 at the JT Shriners, so converging positive trends were in play. At 98th on the money list, his goal is to crack the fields of the Arnold Palmer Invitational (top 70), Memorial (top 70) and Colonial (top 80). He's off to a superb start this week. In addition to circling five birdies, including conversions from 11'2", 39'9" and six yards from off the green at the 11th, 13th and first holes, respectively, he went 6-for-6 in scrambling.

John Mallinger spun a bogey-free, 6-under-par 33-32=65 in his second round of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Mallinger hasn't cashed since a solo fourth at the Reno-Tahoe Open, but he's 98th on the money list and set for a promotion in status in 2013. (He's in the graduate reshuffle category this year.) At TPC Summerlin today, he hit 16 greens and poured in four birdies, the longest of which from just 12 feet at the sixth hole. He then capped his round with an eagle-3 from just 5'4" at the ninth hole before signing his card with a share of the 36-hole clubhouse lead at 7-under 135.

John Mallinger only added 2 points to his tally in the final round of the Reno-Tahoe Open, but still managed to finish fourth with 34 points.

In the finale, he circled two birdies and gave back two bogeys. His ball-striking wasn't the issue, as he split each of Montreux's 14 fairways and landed 13 GIR. The 31 putts are what cost him an opportunity at more points. This marks the second time this year that Mallinger has finished inside the top four in an event, but he is not in the field for the PGA Championship.

John Mallinger hung 10 points on the board in the third round of the Reno-Tahoe Open to improve his 54-hole aggregate to 32.

Mallinger split 12 (of 14) fairways and landed 14 GIR en route to circling six birdies and squaring two bogeys. His putter has been the key, as he is third in Strokes Gained-Putting with 1.771 strokes at the close of the day. While he has 14 top 10s and two runner-up finishes, Mallinger is in search of his first win.

John Mallinger backed up his 11-point opening round of the Reno-Tahoe Open with another in the second round to establish the 36-hole clubhouse lead with 22 points.

Despite hitting only 10 greens in regulation at Montreux today, Mallinger poured in six birdies and swallowed just one bogey. He birdied all four par 5s and has played the set in bogey-free 7-under thus far.
