John Mallinger grabbed 19 points in the third round of the Barracuda Championship to reach the 54-hole mark with 28 in his pocket.
Today's total established the tournament record for most points in a single round in the three-year history that Modified Stableford scoring has been used. Mallinger's highlight was easily his hole-in-one on Montrêux G&CC's par-3 11th hole. He found the bottom of the cup from 155 yards with a 9-iron. He added seven birdies en route to a bogey-free 34-29=63. His other notable conversion was a 50'1" birdie at the par-4 17th. The irons were the key to his round as he landed 15 GIR. Aug 2 - 4:20 PM

Date:

John Mallinger has been added to the published field of this week's Barracuda Championship.

Mallinger received the final sponsor exemption into the field of 132 at Montrêux Golf and Country Club. He lost his PGA TOUR status via a Major Medical Extension when he missed the cut at the Travelers six weeks ago. Two weeks later, he took third place in the inaugural Nova Scotia Open on the Web.com Tour, and then chased that with a T21 at the Utah Championship. So, with only three paydays in five starts on that circuit, he's 73rd in earnings. While it's valid to wonder why he'd risk losing a spot inside the top 75 that qualify for the Web.com Tour Finals, Mallinger's non-member FedExCup points on the PGA TOUR would slot him 188th among members. And since non-members that would otherwise rank 126-200 are allowed to play the Web.com Tour Finals, it makes sense that he'd accept the spot in Reno. He also placed fourth in his last appearance in the tournament in 2012.

Jul 28 - 1:29 PM

John Mallinger completed 36 holes of the Travelers Championship in 2-over-par 72-70=142 and will miss the cut.

Mallinger hit only 20 greens in regulation and wiped away four birdies with six bogeys. This failure not only clinched the weekend off, but he's lost any form of status on the PGA TOUR since this was the final start on his Major Medical Extension. For record, he fell shy of fulfilling its terms by $273,364 and 156.85 FedExCup points. He also came 60 FedExCup points short of qualifying for conditional status for the remainder of the season. Now relegated to the Web.com Tour where he'll have to get a move on to qualify for the Web.com Tour Finals.
Jun 20 - 2:34 PM

John Mallinger is slated to compete in this week's Travelers Championship.

What's notable here is that if he doesn't withdraw prior to his tee time in the opening round, he'll be making his last start via a Major Medical Extension. To retain status, he needs to bank either $273,364 or 156.85 FedExCup points. The easier of the two tracks would require a solo fourth that would pay $297,600. (To fulfill the terms via FedExCup points, he'd have to finish no worse than a two-way T3.) As a secondary goal, Mallinger would secure conditional status with a solo 13th-place finish that would yield exactly the 60 FedExCup points needed. Short of that and he'll lose his status on the PGA TOUR since he is a non-winner and 50 paydays short of qualifying for Veteran Membership. His best result this season is a T12 at the WM Phoenix Open. Mallinger's last top 10 on the PGA TOUR was a T4 at the 2012 Frys.com Open.

Jun 15 - 4:10 PM

John Mallinger completed 36 hole of the FedEx St. Jude Classic in 7-over-par 77-70=147 and will miss the cut.

Sigh. His lid-lifter was stained by three bogeys and three doubles. Because he opened with a 6 at the par-4 first hole and didn't recover, at no point was he as low as even par. But it's just more of the same, really. Mallinger has now gone nine rounds without a red number and he's just 5-for-12 on the season with only one top-45 finish. Today's latest disappointment leaves him with just one start on his Major Medical Extension to earn $273,364 or 156.85 FedExCup points and retain status. He'll have a week to think about where he's going to burn that last start as he didn't qualify for the U.S. Open.
Jun 7 - 2:41 PM

John Mallinger completed 36 holes of the HP Byron Nelson Championship in 9-over-par 75-74=149 and will miss the cut.

He found just one birdie in each round and squared nine bogeys and a double to secure the weekend off. This leaves him with just two starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $273,364 or 156.85 FedExCup points and retain status. He started the week at 171st in FedExCup points.
May 16 - 2:03 PM

John Mallinger signed for a pair of even-par 72s at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, missing the cut by two strokes.

He exchanged five birdies with five bogeys at TPC Louisiana. This ends his consecutive cuts made streak at four, but more importantly he now has only three starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to bank $273,364 or 156.85 FedExCup points and retain status.
Apr 25 - 8:55 PM

John Mallinger was resigned to a share of 68th place at the RBC Heritage, earning $12,238.00 and 5.50 FedExCup points.

He wrangled only eight birdies all week en route to 5-over-par 69-74-73-73=289. Half of them dropped in his opening round. The payday extends Mallinger's consecutive cuts made streak to four, but the best of the bunch was a mere T46 at the Valero Texas Open. He needs to get it in gear fast, beginning with his appearance at this week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans, for he's down to four starts on his Major Medical Extension to collect $273,364 or 156.85 FedExCup points and retain status.

Apr 20 - 7:33 PM

John Mallinger submitted a 2-under-par 34-35=69 for his opening round of the RBC Heritage.

Mallinger split 12 (of 14) fairways but only nine greens in regulation. No biggie as he saved par seven times while complementing the short-game wizardry with four birdies. His longest par save measured 10'5" at the par-3 fourth hole. His notable birdies dropped in from 13'6" and 12'5" at Nos. 13 and 7, respectively. Mallinger signed his card sitting three strokes off the clubhouse lead. It's the first step of what could be a critical week for the long-term. He arrived in Hilton Head Island with five starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $273,364 or 156.85 FedExCup points and retain status.
Apr 17 - 4:54 PM

At 1-over-par 72-72-75-70=289, John Mallinger tied for 54th place at the Shell Houston Open.

He banked $14,656.00 and 15.50 FedExCup points, but he can't afford many more pedestrian efforts as he chases the terms of his Major Medical Extension. He's 5-for-8 on the season but has just one top-45 finish. Mallinger is down to five starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $273,364 or 156.85 FedExCup points and retain status.
Apr 6 - 5:20 PM

At 4-over-par 74-73-70-75=292, John Mallinger shared 46th place at the Valero Texas Open.

He survived the 36-hole cut on the number, and then traded five birdies for two bogeys on Saturday to clinch a spot in the finale. Alas, he hit only eight greens in regulation and picked off only one birdie. His haul amounted to $15,934.00 and 20.5 FedExCup points, so he'll conclude the Texas Swing with six starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $288,020 or 172.35 FedExCup points and retain status.

Mar 30 - 6:51 PM

John Mallinger finished in last place among the 75 golfers that completed 72 holes at the Valspar Championship.

After surviving the 54-hole cut on the number, Mallinger stumbled to a 9-over-par 40-40=80 today to poar 14-over 298. He went 0-for-9 in birdie chances on Sunday. Nevertheless, he pockets $10,830.00 and 0.90 FedExCup points, leaving seven starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $303,954 or 192.85 FedExCup points and retain status.
Mar 16 - 6:53 PM

John Mallinger completed 36 holes of the Puerto Rico Open in 1-over-par 72-73=145 and missed the cut by two strokes.

He can blame this week's short trip on his first four holes today. Starting on the back side of Trump International Golf Club-Puerto Rico, Mallinger opened double bogey-bogey-bogey-bogey to bury the early hole. That he recovered with five birdies (against one more bogey) was a testament to his grit, but the damage was done. It drops him to 2-for-5 on the season and leaves him with eight starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $314,784 or 193.75 FedExCup points and retain status. He'll try again at next week's Valspar Championship where he's cashed in each of his last three appearances.

Mar 7 - 8:16 PM

John Mallinger submitted a pair of 2-over-par 73s at the Northern Trust Open and will miss the cut.

He split 20 (of 28) fairways, but found only 19 greens in regulation. That mismanagement allowed for six bogeys and a triple-bogey 7 (at the eighth hole today) to erased an eagle and three birdies. He'll enter a week off with nine starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $314,784 or 193.75 FedExCup points and retain status.
Feb 14 - 5:07 PM

John Mallinger shared 64th place at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am at 1-over-par 71-71-74=216.

He missed the 54-hole cut one the number but was fortunate to cash at all given he missed 25 greens in regulation and played his last four holes in 3-over. He'll happily take the $13,200.00 and 2.58 FedExCup to this week's Northern Trust Open where he'll tee it up with 10 starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $314,784 or 193.75 FedExCup points and retain status.
