Mike Small successfully defended his PGA Professional National Championship at French Lick Resort in French Lick, Indiana today.

Small completed 72 holes in 8-under-par 278, good for a three-stroke margin of victory over Sonny Skinner. This is the third time that Small has won this event; he first triumphed in 2005. The top 20 in French Lick will play in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in August. Among the notables that will join Small and Skinner in Wisconsin are 2008 PGA Pro National champ, Scott Hebert; 2007 winner, Chip Sullivan; and two-time victor (2000 2003), Tim Thelen. In total, just six of the qualifiers will be making their PGA Championship debuts.

Mike Small shot a 7-under-par 277 for a one-stroke victory today at the PGA Professional National Championship at Twin Warriors GC in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico.

This is the second time that Small has won this event (2005), becoming just the fourth ever to do so multiple times. "It's kind of shocking to win this week, when my expectations were so low," admitted Small, who is the head golf coach at the University of Illinois. He is one of 20 to qualify for the PGA Championship. Among the notables joining him at Hazeltine are former PGA Tour member Lee Rinker, one-time Nationwide Tour winner Chris Starkjohann and last year's winner, Scott Hebert. Small will also receive six starts in PGA Tour events in 2010.
