In the final start on his Major Medical Extension, Paul Goydos settled for a two-way share of 70th place at the John Deere Classic.
Goydos started the day in a logjam at T35 and needed no worse than a two-way T2 to secure conditional status for the remainder of the season. Instead, he blew up for a 4-over 39-36=75 to post 3-under 281. Only a victory (and its two-year exemption) would have fulfilled the terms of the MME to retain status. Once the $9,447.00 he earned was plugged in, he came up short of the primary goal by $546,849 and conditional status by $373,634. For the record, Goydos will plummet into the Past Champions category, but he'll likely spend most of his time on the Champions Tour moving forward. Jul 13 - 6:30 PM

Date:

Paul Goydos reached the midpoint of The Greenbrier Classic in 8-over-par 73-75=148 and will miss the cut.

He erased five birdies with 10 bogeys and one triple (at the par-3 15th hole in the second round). It goes in the books as his eighth consecutive start without a payday and leaves him with just one start on his Major Medical Extension to earn $556,296 and retain status. He's scheduled to peg it at next week's John Deere Classic where he shot 59 in 2010. The purse is just $4.7 million, so only a victory would fulfill the terms of the MME. To secure conditional status, Goydos needs to bank $383,081, which would be achieved with a two-way T2 (worth $413,600). Short of that and he'll tumble into the Past Champions category. However, now that he's 50 years of age, he'd simply continue his competitive career on the Champions Tour.

Jul 4 - 5:01 PM

Paul Goydos reached the halfway point of the Travelers Championship in 4-over-par 70-74=144 and will miss the cut.

Sunshine turns 50 years old today, so he'll have to rely on someone else to provide a gift. He hit only 21 greens in regulation at TPC River Highlands and offset six birdies with 10 bogeys. It's his seventh consecutive start without a payday. Goydos is down to two starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $556,296 and retain status. Now that he's eligible for the Champions Tour, if he competes on that circuit during a week when he's eligible for the concurrent PGA TOUR event on merit, he'll exhaust a start on his MME.
Jun 20 - 6:20 PM

Paul Goydos withdrew during his second round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

It's not often that a golfer elects not to try to polish off a bogey-free round of golf, but that's exactly what Goydos did. He was blemish-free through 16 holes of his second round and sat 3-under-par when he called it quits in Memphis. Now, he opened with a 7-over 77, so at 4-over and a projected cut of even par, not to mention the prospect of more inclement weather, he simply cut his losses. This is his sixth consecutive start without a payday and leaves him with three starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $556,296 and retain status. However, as we've chronicled for months, the most important stat for Goydos right now is that he turns 50 years of age on June 20. He did not qualify for the U.S. Open.
Jun 7 - 9:42 AM

Paul Goydos completed 36 holes of the Wells Fargo Championship in 10-over-par 78-76=154 and will miss the cut.

He went 2-for-19 in par-breaker opportunities -- both birdies on par 5s in the second round -- and swallowed 10 bogeys and a double to secure his fifth consecutive MC. In fact, he's cashed just once in his last 11 starts (T70, Valspar). Today's leaves him with four starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $556,296 and retain status. Goydos is counting the day until he turns 50, however. As numerical symmetry would have it, the updated countdown matches his current age.
May 2 - 1:06 PM

At 9-over-par 75-76=151, Paul Goydos missed the cut at the RBC Heritage by five strokes.

He circled two birdies in each round, but erased the first two with six bogeys and the second set with one bogey, one double and one quad. Yes, Goydos penciled in a 7 at the par-3 17th in the second round to secure the rest of the weekend off. After finding a greenside bunker off the tee, his blast landed in a different bunker on the other side of the green. He failed to escape with his third, and eventually three-putted from just inside 20 feet. This is his 11th MC in 14 starts this season. It leaves him with five starts on a Major Medical Extension to earn $556,296 and retain status. If there's any good news, he's now just two months from turning 50 years of age (June 20).
Apr 19 - 1:35 PM

Paul Goydos reached the midpoint of the Shell Houston Open in 3-over-par 69-78=147 and will miss the cut.

Thursday's score was just his eighth red number in 33 rounds this season, but alas, it was just a tease. He circled two birdies at the Golf Club of Houston today, but also incurred six bogeys and a double to secure his 10th MC in 13 starts. He now has six remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $556,296 and retain status. He seems destined to burn through them, and then hop on the Champion Tour when he's eligible on June 20.
Apr 4 - 6:38 PM

Paul Goydos completed 36 holes of the Valero Texas Open in 12-over-par 77-79=156 and will miss the cut.

He circled only one birdie in each round while amassing 10 bogeys. He also double-bogeyed the par-5 second hole twice. Now 3-for-12 on the season, Goydos has seven starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $556,296 and retain status.
Mar 28 - 4:01 PM

At 9-over-par 73-80=153, Paul Goydos missed the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational by seven strokes.

Goydos split eight (of 14) fairways and hit 10 greens in regulation today, but he managed just one birdie, that a 2 from 41 inches at the seventh hole. Four bogeys, one double and a triple stained the rest of his scorecard. In fact, he penciled in every digit from 2 through 7 at least once. This leaves him with eight starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $556,296 and retain status. He's now 3-for-11 on the season. Look for him at next week's Valero Texas Open where he hasn't competed since 2011.

Mar 21 - 7:49 PM

At 8-over-par 75-69-73-75=292, Paul Goydos finished T70 at the Valspar Championship.

Goydos went 0-for-11 in par-breaker opportunities in today's finale. He played his last 26 holes in birdie-free 7-over. Nevertheless, this is his first payday in his last six starts. With $11,229.00 applied to his Major Medical Extension, Sunshine now has nine starts remaining to bank $556,296 and retain status. He's scheduled to compete in this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Mar 16 - 6:42 PM

Paul Goydos signed for a pair of 1-over-par 72s at the Northern Trust Open and will miss the cut.

Goydos played in the late-early draw, but we waited to report this because the cut line was flirting with squeezing him inside the bubble. Alas, it plateaued and shifted toward the opposite direction late this afternoon. His opening round was a an anomaly in two ways. First, he split 12 (of 14) fairways but hit only five greens in regulation. Second, as you can judge by the score, he fared well in avoiding big numbers. Indeed, Goydos suffered only two bogeys against one birdie. At his age, moral victories are probably meaningless, so today's 10-GIR performance will be forgotten soon. This is his fifth straight MC and leaves him with 10 starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $567,525 and retain status.
Feb 14 - 8:51 PM

Paul Goydos completed 54 holes of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in 3-over-par 72-70-76=218 and will miss the cut.

He hit 12 greens in regulation on the host course today but failed to record a par breaker, all the while squaring four bogeys. He fanned on six tries inside 10 feet and signed his card with a strokes gained-putting split south of -3.400. Now just 2-for-8 on the season, he'll head to the Northern Trust Open with 11 starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $567,525 and retain status.
Feb 8 - 7:45 PM

Paul Goydos turned in respective rounds of 72 and 73 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open to post 3-over 145, four strokes too many to play the weekend.

He hit only 20 greens in regulation and offset six birdies with nine bogeys. It's his fifth missed cut in seven starts this year. The 49½-year-old will mosey up to next week's stop at Pebble Beach with 12 starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $567,525 and retain status.
Jan 31 - 7:54 PM

Paul Goydos shot 3-over-par 73-74=147 at the Farmers Insurance Open and will miss the cut.

He opened on the South Course at Torrey Pines, so he beat the field average by nearly one-and-a-half strokes, but he managed only one birdie on the North today despite standing over 14 opportunities to break par. This leaves him with 13 starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $567,525 and retain status. The 49-year-old will try to turn it around at next week's Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Jan 24 - 6:29 PM

Paul Goydos shot even-par 72-70-74=216 at the Humana Challenge and missed the cut by nine strokes.

If there was a bright side, he limited his gaffes to seven over-par holes, but they came in the form of four birdies, two doubles and a triple. Eleven birdies did nothing more than keep him from drifting into a black number for the week when he needed to be threatening double digits under par. Now 2-for-5 on the season, he has 14 starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension to earn $567,525 and retain status. Up next on his schedule is this week's Farmers Insurance Open. He's a local but has mustered only one top-15 finish among 11 cuts made in 15 appearances, and that was a T9 in 1994, his sophomore season on the PGA TOUR.
