Nicholas Thompson will take a pass on this week's Greenbrier Classic, opting for a start on the Tour instead.
Nicholas Thompson was an early commit to The Greenbrier Classic but was a Monday withdraw. He is taking his talents to Findley Lake, New York, for the LECOM Health Challenge. After a runner-up kicked off his season on the Tour, Thompson has been focusing his attention there, being a much easier route to regaining his PGA TOUR card, rather than attempting a home run finish in the limited opportunities he is given. Thompson currently ranks 26th on the Tour money list, so he'll need a few more strong finishes before the year is over. Mon, Jul 3, 2017 04:19:00 PM

Prior to the start of the event, Nicholas Thompson has withdrawn from this week's FedEx St. Jude Classic, choosing instead to play in the Rust-Oleum Championship on the Tour. Andres Romero will take his spot in the St. Jude Classic field.

Thompson is taking on Woodmont Country Club at today's U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Rockville, Maryland. After that he's chosen to play in the minor leagues this week, always a tough decision when you have to make scheduling decisions like this, having to weigh long-term status over the short-term gains of playing one PGA TOUR event. Thompson has missed his last eight cuts on the PGA TOUR but is 7-for-10 on the Tour this season, including a T2 at The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic and a T9 at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open.

Nicholas Thompson battled through a knee injury and was limited to five starts during the 2015-16 campaign but he'll look to get back on track as the calendar hits 2017.

Thompson was playing last season on conditional status after finishing 131st in the FedExCup the year prior. However, he was forced to shut it down after an 0-for-5 start, electing for knee surgery instead. He rested for 19 weeks then returned for eight starts on the Tour, earning a paycheck in just one of those. It's clear there is rust in his game and that carried over to a missed cut at The RSM Classic, his lone start of the fall. Thompson now has eight starts remaining on a Non-Exempt Medical which requires 454 FEC points or $717,890 to move into the top 125 category for the remainder of the season. The Georgia Tech product is a long shot to fulfill the terms of that medical extension, which means starts will be tough to come by for the PGA TOUR veteran.

Nicholas Thompson readies for his first start of 2016 at this week's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Thompson posted a goose egg during the fall, failing to collect a paycheck in three starts. If you tilt your head to course history, it's not much brighter as he posted a T7 in 2008, but missed the cut in all five of his other attempts. Gamers could try to get cute and hope for a repeat of 2008, but all signs are pointing to a letdown this week.

In 233 career PGA TOUR starts, Nicholas Thompson has made 113 cuts and missed 109.

Thompson celebrates his 33rd birthday on Christmas Day and hopefully it will bring him some joy after missing the cut in his first three events of 2015-16, including by four at The RSM Classic in his latest start (70-74). The South Florida native and resident had one top 10 last season on 31 starts (T9, OHL Classic) to finish 131st in FedExCup points and conditional status. He was 126th in FEC points on 30 starts the season prior (125th in money).

Nicholas Thompson survived open qualifying for the OHL Classic at Mayakoba today.

Full-field scoring isn't released often for this four-spotter. If it is, we'll fill in some of the blanks. Nitro missed the cut at the Sanderson Farms Championship by two strokes, so that opened the door to give the OQ a try. He tied for ninth in last year's OHL Classic. Former PGA TOUR member James Driscoll also survived the open qualifier. He's 1-for-4 at El Camaleón with a T31 in 2013. Ryan Blaum and Domenico Geminiani round out the qualifiers. Both will be making their tournament debuts. The Italian will be making his first PGA TOUR start. He hasn't competed in an event allocating Official World Golf Ranking points since the 2014 Northern Ireland Open on the Challenge Tour. The field at El Camaleón Golf Club is now complete at 132.

Nicholas Thompson returns for his third consecutive Sanderson Farms Championship and begins his eighth season on the PGA TOUR with conditional status

Thompson is one of three Thompsons in the field this week, playing alongside brother Curtis, and Michael (no relation). In his last two trips to Mississippi, he's posted T35 at last year's maiden visit to the CC of Jackson and went for solo fourth in 2013 (Annandale GC) where he co-lead after 54 holes. In 66 starts since, the 32-year-old has posted just two top 10s, including one last season on 31 starts (T9, OHL Classic at Mayakoba). He finished 131st in the FedExCup standings, missing the Playoffs for a second consecutive season. In four starts at the Tour Finals, he missed the first two cuts and then posted T52 and T24 in the finale at TPC Sawgrass - Dye's Valley Course.

Nicholas Thompson heads to the biggest little city in the world for this week's Barracuda Championship.

Thompson has a forgettable track record at the Barracuda. He is 4-for-5 in his career, but nothing greater than the T42 he earned in his 2006 debut. He's 46th on TOUR when it comes to hitting greens in regulation, but he's not putting himself in position to score on a regular basis. With 13 career top 10s in 218 starts, there are better options to use at this week's Barracuda.

Overnight co-leader Nicholas Thompson backed up for a 1-over-par 35-37=72 in today's second round of the John Deere Classic and posted 7-under 135 at the break.

This didn't take long as Thompson is already three strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead. He converted on only two of 13 chances to break par and he squared three bogeys. The squares included a three-putt from only 6'7" at the par-4 ninth hole.

Nicholas Thompson torched TPC Deere Run for an 8-under-par 31-32=63 in his opening round of the John Deere Classic, finishing with a share of the clubhouse lead.

Nitro went out in the first threesome off the 10th tee in today's afternoon wave. He missed only one of the 14 fairways and went 4-for-4 in scrambling, but still swallowed a three-putt bogey at the par-4 11th hole. Now to the positive. After opening with a birdie from 22'5" at the par-5 10th, he added six birdies, three of which from outside 10 feet, including a beauty from 36 feet at the par-4 eighth. But Thompson's highlight came at the par-4 14th where he holed out for eagle from 80 yards. This is his 649th round on the PGA TOUR but he had never signed for an aggregate this low. Prior to today, he had scored 64 seven times.

Nicholas Thompson followed his opening 66 at the Travelers Championship with a 3-under-par 34-33=67 in today's second round to land at 7-under 133 at the break, four strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

For the second consecutive day, Thompson piped 11 (of 14) fairways and created 13 opportunities to score. He converted six times for birdie, four of which from outside 10 feet. Those of those ran longer than 21 feet with the highlight stretching 43 feet at the par-3 eighth hole. He also squared a trio of bogey-5s as a result of missing greens in regulation, but his touch on the greens yielded a strokes gained: putting clip just shy of 3.400 for the round at last check.

Nicholas Thompson opened the Travelers Championship with a 4-under-par 30-36=66 to lay claim to the first clubhouse lead.

Going out in the first threesome off the par-4 10th tee at TPC River Highlands, Nitro promptly holed out for birdie from off the green eight yards away. He added birdies at 11 and 13, and then circled an eagle at the drivable, par-4 15th where his tee ball came to rest just inside 20 feet from the target. Thompson got it to bogey-free 6-under through 15 holes, but failed to get up and down at Nos. 7 and 8 where he settled for bogeys. Overall, he hit 13 greens in regulation on the day. At 117th in the FedExCup standings, one strong week would all but shore his spot in the Playoffs.

Nicholas Thompson slots in at 117th in the FedExCup standings entering this week's Travelers Championship.

Thompson is 3-for-6 at the Travelers with a T13 in 2010 his best and a missed cut (by seven shots) in last year's edition his low point. He added a T24 in 2013, but was T7 after 54 holes, posting a final-round 3-over-par 73. All told, Thompson is 17-under at TPC River Highlands, but his last three rounds show 9-over (73-73-73). The 32-year-old is 10-for-23 on the season with five top 25s, one going for a top 10 (T9, OHL Classic at Mayakoba). He broke a slide of six consecutive MC with a T16 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, but followed with a 10-over 75-75 trunk slam at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, his 102nd MC on 212 career starts.

Nicholas Thompson tees it up this week at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial slotting in at 110th in the FedExCup rankings.

Thompson began the year No. 212 in the Official World Golf Ranking but has slipped to 279 on the heels of five straight missed cuts and nine MCs in his last 12 events. The 32-year-old has hit on just one top 10 (T9, OHL Classic at Mayakoba) in 20 starts on the season. Thompson is 2-for-4 at the Crowne Plaza with his one top 10 coming in the T3 variety in last year's edition. Eerily similar to this year's current form, Thompson entered last year's tournament having missed four cuts in a row.

Shortly after the second round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans was suspended due to inclement weather at 4:30 p.m. CT, play was called for the day. UPDATE: Play is scheduled to resume at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday.

They were able to play nine-and-a-half hours today before this delay. The entire late-early draw has 36 holes in the books, but all in the other half were stranded when the horn sounded. That group includes Nicholas Thompson, who went out in the first threesome off the first tee at noon. He's bogey-free 4-under-par on the day and 4-under for the tournament, but just inside the cut line at T67. When play resumes, Nitro will be standing over a look at birdie from 42'3" on the green at the par-5 18th hole.
