Mariners designated C Kelly Shoppach for assignment.
The Mariners have signed Henry Blanco to replace him on the active roster, so it looks like are committed to giving Mike Zunino the bulk of the playing time behind the plate. Shoppach is hitting .196 with three home runs and a .638 OPS in 35 games this season. He should be able to find a backup job somewhere. Jun 14 - 4:07 PM

Kelly Shoppach doesn't have a multi-hit game since April 26.

In that 11-game stretch, he's posted a slash line that would make even Jesus Montero weep: .135/.238/.270. Shoppach has struck out at least once in every game he's started this season except two. The Baylor product should see more playing time (along with Jesus Sucre) due to Montero's exile, but both are merely AL-only fodder. SAFECO promises to sap some of Shoppach's power, the only above-average offensive trait he once possessed.
May 27 - 12:38 AM

Kelly Shoppach hit a two-run homer off Jarrod Parker in Saturday's loss to the A's.

Shoppach's second homer came a month after his first. He was picking up extra playing time because of Jesus Montero's struggles last month, but tonight's start was just his third in May. Shoppach is probably a better all-around player than Montero right now, but the Mariners know they need to get Montero going if they're going to have much hope of putting a solid offense on the field this year.
May 12 - 12:28 AM

Kelly Shoppach went 3-for-3 with a solo homer, an RBI double and a walk Wednesday versus the Astros.

Unless the Mariners decide to give up on Justin Smoak and use Jesus Montero at DH or maybe even first base, Shoppach's playing time will remain quite limited. He's started three of the Mariners' 10 games so far.
Apr 11 - 1:54 AM

Kelly Shoppach blasted his first home run of the Cactus League season on Friday, helping to power the Mariners to a 3-1 victory over the Padres.

His solo shot in the fifth inning off Tyson Ross was Shoppach’s only hit in four trips to the plate. He’s now hitting .276 (8-for-29) on the spring, though he owns an alarming 11/0 K/BB ratio. He’ll open the season as the primary backup to Jesus Montero, but could be out of a job by midseason if Mike Zunino continues his rapid ascent to the show.

Mariners signed C Kelly Shoppach to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that Shoppach could earn an additional $500,000 with incentives. The 32-year-old batted .233/.309/.425 over 76 games last season between the Red Sox and Mets and is expected to serve as Jesus Montero's backup in 2013.
Feb 7 - 4:37 PM

According to MLB.com's Greg Johns, the Mariners have reached a one-year contract with Kelly Shoppach.

Shoppach will be in Seattle on Wednesday for a physical, after which the contract should be made official. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says the deal is worth $1.5 million, with a possible $500,000 available in incentives. The 32-year-old is likely to serve as the Mariners' primary backup this season behind Jesus Montero. He batted .233/.309/.425 over 76 games in 2012.
Jan 29 - 5:59 PM

ESPN's Jason Churchill reports that the Mariners are "making significant progress" in contract talks with free agent Kelly Shoppach.

The Mariners traded John Jaso to Oakland earlier this month, and could look to bring in Shoppach as depth behind Jesus Montero, as the 32-year-old has a history with manager Eric Wedge. If signed, Shoppach would serve as Seattle's backup catcher and likely push Ronny Paulino into an organizational depth role.
Jan 27 - 10:34 PM

Kelly Shoppach delivered a crucial two-out, two-run single off Steve Cishek in the ninth inning on Saturday, leading the Mets to a 5-3 victory over the Marlins.

Shoppach entered the game as a defensive replacement for Josh Thole, then came up huge in his only at-bat of the evening. He’s done a nice job since being acquired by the Mets, now hitting .346 (9-for-26) with two homers and eight runs batted in. In deep two-catcher fantasy formats, he may even be worth starting on a weekly basis.

Kelly Shoppach went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in a 9-5 win over the Phillies in 10 innings on Tuesday night.

Shoppach had a game-tying RBI double in the top of the eighth and put the game out of reach with a two-run blast in a four-run 10th inning. He is now 7-for-22 (.318) with two home runs and five RBI in seven games since being acquired from the Red Sox earlier this month. His pop could give him some value in NL-only leagues down the stretch, even though he's on the short-side of a platoon with Josh Thole.

Kelly Shoppach will make his Mets' debut Thursday night against the Reds.

Shoppach, who was acquired from the Red Sox this week, will start behind the plate and catch rookie right-hander Matt Harvey. He'll likely be used on the short-side of a platoon with Josh Thole the rest of the way as the Mets evaluate whether he could be part of the roster in 2013. The 32-year-old backstop is due to hit free agency this winter.

Mets acquired C Kelly Shoppach from the Red Sox for a player to be named later.

He'll provide depth at catcher in New York alongside Josh Thole, who has struggled to the tune of a .260/.316/.320 batting line this season. Shoppach, 32, is currently scheduled to become a free agent this winter.

Kelly Shoppach cleared revocable waivers on Monday.

The Red Sox can now deal him to any team and free up playing time for youngster Ryan Lavarnway. Shoppach has posted a respectably .250/.327/.471 batting line with five homers and 17 RBI in 48 games played this season. He could draw trade interest from a contending team in need of a better option at backup catcher.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have placed catcher Kelly Shoppach and shortstop Mike Aviles on waivers.

This is standard operating procedure for teams during the month of August, so it doesn't mean that the Red Sox intend to move them. If either player is claimed, the Red Sox can simply pull them back from waivers. Of course, they would also have the option of letting the player go to the claiming team or working out a trade. Cafardo also hears that Carl Crawford and Nick Punto have cleared waivers, which again, isn't particularly surprising or unusual.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Nationals and Brewers have trade interest in Kelly Shoppach of the Red Sox.

It's a bit curious to see the Brewers mentioned since they just traded George Kottaras, but the Nationals have a clear need. Shoppach, 32, is batting .261/.343/.513 with five home runs, 15 RBI and an .856 OPS in 136 plate appearances this season. Dealing him would allow the Red Sox to call up Ryan Lavarnway.
