Garrett Jones had just one hit Sunday, but it was a big one, as he launched a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning in a comeback win over the Reds.
Instead of bringing in Aroldis Chapman with two outs and a runner on to face Jones, who is feeble against left-handed pitching, Reds manager Dusty Baker stuck with Jonathan Broxton. Jones creamed a ball down the right field line that just stayed fair and landed in the Allegheny River on the fly, something that had only been done once before. It was Jones' sixth homer of the season. Jun 2 - 5:27 PM

Garrett Jones had a big day at the plate Friday against the Mets, going 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and two runs scored.

Jones also doubled twice. The three-run shot was originally ruled as in play, but it was switched to a home run after instant replay review. Fortunately for the Pirates, the umpires got it right this time. With his pop against right-handers, Jones should continue to have value in mixed leagues which allow daily lineup changes.
May 10 - 10:20 PM

Garrett Jones hit a two-run homer Monday in a losing cause against the Brewers.

Jones was in a bit of a power drought until Sunday, but now he's suddenly hitting .319 with three homers and 15 RBI for the season. All three of the homers have come in road games. Just like last year, he's having a tough time when the Pirates are home at PNC Park.
Apr 29 - 11:16 PM

Garrett Jones went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a steal in the Pirates' 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

The ice-cold Pirates have gone into Arizona and won two in a row. Jones was 2-for-14 with no RBI in week one, but he's 4-for-9 with a homer and three RBI so far in the current series.
Apr 10 - 12:59 AM

Garrett Jones launched a solo homer in Monday's 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks.

The longball -- which came in the eighth inning off of Josh Collmenter -- was Jones' only hit of the night in four trips to the plate, but he'll take it. He'll continue to start at first base against right-handed pitching but isn't a great corner infield option.
Apr 9 - 12:54 AM

Garrett Jones went 2-for-3 with an RBI in his return to the lineup Friday as the Pirates edged the Astros 3-2.

Jones missed a week because of a strained left oblique. He was removed for a pinch-runner after picking up his second hit today.
Mar 15 - 4:55 PM

Garrett Jones (oblique) is slated to return to action Friday against the Astros.

Jones was shut down last week due to a strained left oblique, but he hasn't had any issues over the past few days. He should be fine for Opening Day.
Mar 14 - 4:14 PM

Garrett Jones (oblique) will face faster velocity in batting practice Thursday.

Jones hit and played catch again Wednesday, and he'll ramp things up Thursday. He should resume appearing in Grapefruit League games by the end of this week and is on track to be ready for Opening Day.
Mar 13 - 7:35 PM

Garrett Jones (oblique) took dry swings, fielded ground balls and played catch on Monday in Pirates camp.

Jones was shut down for five days with an oblique injury, but he's making progress now. He should resume appearing in Grapefruit League games by the end of this week and is on track to be ready for Opening Day.
Mar 11 - 9:03 PM

Garrett Jones (oblique) will take some dry swings Monday.

Jones is feeling a bit better, but it doesn't sound like he's particularly close to playing in a game. The Pirates will take it slowly with their first baseman, as the slightest setback would likely mean starting the season on the DL.
Mar 11 - 9:38 AM

The left oblique tightness that forced Garrett Jones from Thursday's game isn't considered serious.

"It's really nothing serious," said Jones, who originally felt the tightness Wednesday. "I just didn't want it to escalate into anything more serious right now." While it seems like a minor ailment right now, oblique injuries can linger, so the Pirates figure to take it slowly with him.
Mar 8 - 9:58 AM

Garrett Jones is currently dealing with some soreness on his left side.

The issue caused him to be scratched from Thursday's lineup, though it's not known how long he'll be sidelined. We should know more in the next couple of days.
Mar 7 - 11:28 AM

Garrett Jones was scratched from Thursday's Grapefruit League lineup.

Brad Hawpe will start in his place at first base. No word yet on the reason for the change. Some have speculated on Jones as a potential fit for the Yankees, but there's no indication that the Pirates have talked trade with them.
Mar 7 - 9:44 AM

Pirates avoided arbitration with 1B Garrett Jones by agreeing to a one-year, $4.5 million contract.

Coming off a career-high 27 home runs in 2012, Jones will get a raise from the $2.25 million he made last season. He was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter and remains under team control through 2015.
Jan 19 - 10:24 AM

Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that interest in Garrett Jones has "picked up."

Biertempfel adds that the Orioles have "lost interest" in Jones, but apparently other clubs are keen on him. It's a little surprising that the Pirates are apparently interested in moving him since they fancy themselves as contenders in 2013. But, with Jones coming off a career-high 27 homers in 2012 and his salary set to shoot up in arbitration, the Bucs might view this as the best time to deal him. If Jones is traded, Gaby Sanchez would be in line to start at first base.
