Nationals reassigned 1B/OF Micah Owings and INF/OF Carlos Rivero to minor league camp.
Owings was plenty productive this spring, hitting .324 (12-for-37) with two homers, three doubles and 10 RBI in 19 games, but he's better off spending some time in the minors as he continues his transition to a position player. He could be an interesting bench bat for the Nationals down the road. Mar 28 - 5:45 PM

According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, Micah Owings is unlikely to earn a bench spot on the Nationals' Opening Day roster.

He's likely to start the season at Triple-A Syracuse. If he continues to produce there like he has in the spring, he'll certainly earn his way onto the roster before too long. Owings is hitting .393/.414/.714 with two homers and 10 RBI in just 28 at-bats this spring. He'd be a very intriguing fantasy option if he were to find his way into everyday at-bats.
Mar 22 - 10:59 PM

Micah Owings will be sidelined for a second straight day Tuesday due to a quad injury.

It doesn't sound like a big deal. Owings entered camp as a longshot to win a spot on the bench, but he's stated his case by batting .400/.423/.760 with two homers and 10 RBI.
Mar 18 - 7:57 PM

Micah Owings hit a grand slam off John Ely on Thursday to propel the Nationals to a 6-3 win over the Astros.

Owings has two homers, three doubles and a single in 19 at-bats for the Nationals. He'd be more intriguing as a bench option if he could still pitch once in a while, but even though that's not a possibility right now, he's still making a case.
Mar 14 - 4:35 PM

Micah Owings homered Friday in his third at-bat against the Cardinals.

Owings, who made his spring debut yesterday, came off the bench and played left field again today. The homer is his lone hit in four at-bats so far.
Mar 8 - 5:08 PM

Micah Owings struck out in his lone at-bat in his Grapefruit League debut Thursday.

Owings, who had been dealing with a left wrist ailment, also fielded a liner in left field. The former pitcher is trying to make it as a first baseman/corner outfielder, but he'll obviously have to make his way up through the minors first.
Mar 7 - 8:58 PM

Micah Owings recently receive a cortisone injection for his ailing left wrist.

Owings has missed eight straight games because of a sore left wrist, but he was able to take some light swings in the batting cage on Sunday. There's no timetable for his return to game action, but it doesn't sound like it will be too much longer.
Mar 3 - 2:54 PM

Micah Owings received treatment on his left wrist Monday morning.

Owings didn't make the trip for Monday's game, but it doesn't sound like a major concern. The 30-year-old is in camp as a first baseman and outfielder this spring as he attempts to make the transition from pitcher.
Feb 25 - 4:44 PM

Micah Owings has not been throwing or taking full batting practice in Nationals' camp due to a shoulder issue.

Owings had to have dye injected into his shoulder for an MRI, but the Nationals aren't concerned and think he'll return to full participation soon. The 30-year-old is playing first base and the outfield for the Nats as he tries to make the move from pitcher to position player.
Feb 21 - 7:32 PM

Nationals manager Davey Johnson confirmed on Friday that Micah Owings will play first base and outfield for the Nationals, but will not be used as a pitcher.

The 30-year-old owns a career .283/.310/.502 line in the big leagues, with nine homers and 35 RBI in only 205 at-bats. It's not a stretch to think that he could develop into a useful right-handed bat off the bench, and could even become fantasy relevant should the Nationals suffer any injuries.
Feb 15 - 7:53 PM

Nationals signed 1B Micah Owings to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Since the Nationals called Owings a first baseman in their announcement, this would seem to indicate that he has officially given up on pitching. The 30-year-old threw 9 2/3 innings with the Padres last season before undergoing surgery on his right elbow. He owns a .283/.310/.502 batting line in the big leagues and has socked nine home runs in 219 plate appearances, so it's not inconceivable that he could eventually become a useful right-handed bat off the bench.
Feb 6 - 11:27 AM

Padres released RHP Micah Owings.

Owings only made it 9 2/3 innings this season before requiring surgery on his right elbow. The 30-year-old right-hander will try to latch on with a new organization.

Micah Owings will have surgery to "clean out" his right elbow.

It's good that he doesn't need Tommy John surgery, but a scope will still almost surely cost him the remainder of the season. It will be interesting to see if Owings sticks to his plan next year of trying to become a pitcher/hitter combo.

Micah Owings is contemplating surgery on his ailing right forearm.

Owings had been scheduled to report to Triple-A Tucson to play as a position player, but he's decided that going under the knife might be wise. What kind of operation he would have isn't clear, but it would surely sideline him for the remainder of the season.
Sun, Jul 15, 2012 11:04:00 AM

Micah Owings (elbow) did not report to Triple-A Tucson on Thursday as scheduled.

Owings was expected to report to the minors to begin getting some at-bats as a position player, but Tucson manager Terry Kennedy suggested that his elbow is still an issue. It's not clear if or when he'll join the club.
