Red Sox released RHP Ryan Harvey.
Harvey, who was signed to a minor league deal last December, had been at extended spring training as he worked on his conversion from outfielder to reliever. Evidently the Sox weren't too impressed with what they saw and have decided to abandon the experiment. Fri, May 27, 2011 08:21:00 AM

Red Sox signed RHP Ryan Harvey to a minor league contract.

Harvey was a first-round draft pick of the Cubs back in 2003 and spent the first six years of his professional career in the outfield. He always had a strong throwing arm and has turned himself recently into a reliever. It remains to be seen if the conversion will work.

Cubs released OF Ryan Harvey, LHP Mark Pawelek, RHP Grant Johnson and LHP Edward Campusano.

The Cubs have purged their system of the sixth overall pick in the 2003 draft, the 20th overall pick in 2005 and the 66th pick in 2004. Harvey finally made it to Double-A in his sixth year in the system, but hit just .216/.276/.360 in 111 at-bats there. He had a sub-.300 OBP in his nearly 1,800 at-bats in the Cubs system. Pawelek, the 2005 first-rounder, was a complete bust after a promising start. He had throwing just 42 1/3 innings over the last two seasons, and the Cubs were never pleased with his conditioning and attitude.

Ryan Harvey homered Thursday in his first game back at Single-A Daytona.

Micah Hoffpauir's return to Triple-A Iowa's lineup resulted in the demotion of Jake Fox to Double-A, which subsequently resulted in Harvey's return to Daytona. The sixth overall pick in the 2003 draft was hitting .216/.276/.360 witt 39 strikeouts in 36 games in his first attempt at Double-A.

2003 first-round pick Ryan Harvey homered twice Thursday for Single-A Daytona.

Harvey shows major league power on occasion, but he's still best at striking out and getting hurt. He's batting .230/.253/.391 in 87 at-bats this season, and he's in danger of seeing his career OBP fall under .300 if he doesn't improve in the second half.

2003 first-round pick Ryan Harvey hit four homers Friday for Single-A Daytona.

Harvey had a three-homer game last season and he had already had a couple of two-homer games this month. Still, four in a game is pretty special. While Harvey is batting just .234/.268/.421 in 359 at-bats, he has taken a big step forward in July, hitting nine of his 16 homers. If he keeps this up, he could earn a promotion to Double-A to bring 2007. Just 21 years old, he still has plenty of potential.

Ryan Harvey went 4-for-7 with two homers and eight RBI in a doubleheader for Single-A Daytona on Sunday.

He also had a two-homer game on Thursday, so maybe he's finally starting to figure out the Florida State League. The 2003 first-round pick is batting .223/.262/.387 in 318 at-bats.

2003 first-round pick Ryan Harvey hit a pair of solo homers Thursday for Single-A Daytona.

With a .214/.255/.359 line and 85 strikeouts in 304 at-bats, Harvey is in the midst of a disappointing season. His 35-homer potential means the Cubs certainly won't be giving up on him anytime soon, but it looks like he'll need to spend a second year in the Florida State League in 2007.

Ryan Harvey hit his his first two homers of the year for Single-A Daytona on Thursday.

Despite striking out 10 times in 22 at-bats, Harvey is hitting .318/.348/.591. It's hard to imagine that he'll be able to keep his average up unless he brings down the Ks. The 2004 first-round pick fanned 137 times for low Single-A Peoria in 2005 and finished at .257/.302/.484 in 467 AB.

Ryan Harvey hit a home run and doubled twice in the second game of Single-A Peoria's doubleheader yesterday.

Harvey, who missed time with a back injury this season, is batting .258/.318/.462 in 221 AB. The 60/16 K/BB ratio needs work, but at least he's showing more power.

Ryan Harvey went 4-for-5 with three homers and seven RBI yesterday for Single-A Peoria.

So much for his early-season slump. Harvey, the sixth overall pick in the 2003 draft, hit .264/.327/.481 with 14 HR, 43 RBI, 78/20 K/BB, 2 SB in 231 AB for short-season Single-A Boise last season.
