Paul Maholm allowed just an unearned run over 7 1/3 innings in defeating the Twins on Wednesday.
Unfortunately, Maholm's two bad starts this year were really bad, because he's given up just nine earned runs in the other eight. This is the fourth time he's gone without allowing a single earned run. Overall, he's 6-4 with a 3.38 ERA. May 22 - 3:41 PM

Paul Maholm allowed four runs (two earned) in six innings Friday in a win over the Dodgers.

Maholm was in line for the loss before Justin Upton launched a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning. The southpaw gave up eight hits (including a home run) and a walk while notching three strikeouts. While Maholm hasn't been able to match his early dominance, he still makes for a useful mixed in mixed fantasy leagues.
May 17 - 10:36 PM

Paul Maholm was shelled for six earned runs over 4 1/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Giants.

He yielded eight total hits -- including a first-inning solo homer to Pablo Sandoval -- while also issuing three walks. Maholm was almost unhittable through his first three starts of the 2013 regular season, but he has begun to regress in recent weeks. The 30-year-old right-hander is still a decent option in mixed fantasy leagues.
May 11 - 7:10 PM

Paul Maholm took a tough loss on Wednesday, allowing just two runs over eight innings against the Nationals.

After getting roughed up in his last outing, it was good to see the southpaw rebound with a strong showing. Unfortunately his counterpart, Jordan Zimmermann, was a little bit better, so Maholm didn't earn a win for his efforts. A two-run homer by Ian Desmond was the only blemish against Maholm on the night. He'll try to get back in the win column Monday against the Reds.
May 1 - 9:28 PM

Paul Maholm’s tremendous start to the 2013 season came to a screeching halt on Friday as the Tigers hammered him to the tune of eight runs on 10 hits in just 3 2/3 innings.

Maholm also issued three free passes and struck out three in his shortened evening. The Tigers struck for four runs in the third inning, and tacked on another four-spot in the fourth before chasing Maholm from the game. Even with this abysmal outing, he’ll still take a solid 3-2 record, 3.30 ERA and 28/11 K/BB ratio into Wednesday’s home tilt against the Nationals.
Apr 26 - 9:51 PM

Paul Maholm allowed three runs over six innings, and the Braves lost to the Pirates on Saturday.

The runs were the first allowed by Maholm in 2013, ending an incredible stretch of 25 2/3 scoreless innings. Even with the loss, Maholm has a stellar 1.03 ERA and 0.87 WHIP through four starts. He'll try to get back in the win column next Friday night against the Tigers.
Apr 20 - 9:38 PM

Paul Maholm went 7 2/3 scoreless innings Sunday as the Braves routed the Nationals 9-0.

Maholm is now 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 20/5 K/BB ratio through 20 1/3 innings (three starts) this season. And the Braves boast the best record in the major leagues at 11-1. Maholm will take on the Pirates next.
Apr 14 - 5:05 PM

Paul Maholm allowed one hit over seven innings and struck out seven in the Braves' 2-0 win over the Marlins on Monday.

Eric O'Flaherty and Craig Kimbrel finished the two-hitter. Maholm has yet to allow a run in 12 2/3 innings this season. He's now fanned 72 batters in 81 1/3 innings since last summer's trade to the Braves. That's a big step forward from where he ever was as a Pirate. Just once in his career has he topped even 120 strikeouts in a season.
Apr 8 - 10:18 PM

Paul Maholm went 5 2/3 scoreless innings in the Braves' win over the Phillies on Wednesday.

It was a typical start for the southpaw, who spread six hits and a walk over his 5 2/3 frames. Maholm, 30, had a great season split between the Cubs and Braves in 2012, registering a 3.67 ERA and winning 13 games in the process. He will never be an elite option for anything, but he gives fantasy owners a little of everything.
Apr 3 - 10:38 PM

Paul Maholm pitched four innings and combined with five Braves relievers on a shutout of the Astros on Thursday.

Maholm moved to 4-1 with a 1.53 ERA. He'll get the Phillies in his first regular-season start next week. It's a pretty good matchup for a left-handed pitcher, so he's worth using in all formats.
Mar 28 - 4:00 PM

Paul Maholm blanked the Nationals for five innings in the Braves' 7-2 victory Monday.

Maholm allowed two hits, walked one and struck out five. He entered with a 5.40 ERA and a 4/6 K/BB ratio in 8 1/3 innings. Maholm can't be expected to match his 2012 totals this year, but he's certainly a better bet now than he was as a Pirate or a Cub. He should be a steady, if unspectacular, NL-only pitcher.
Mar 11 - 4:00 PM

Paul Maholm tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees.

Maholm allowed three hits and was wild, walking four, but he was able to escape damage. The left-hander now has a 5.40 ERA over his first three appearances this spring.
Mar 5 - 10:05 PM

Braves exercised LHP Paul Maholm's $6.5 million club option for 2013.

Maholm, 30, posted a solid 3.67 ERA over 189 innings this season between the Cubs and Braves while averaging a career-best 6.7 K/9. Now that the option has been picked up, the Braves project to have Maholm, Tim Hudson, Kris Medlen, Mike Minor, Tommy Hanson, Julio Teheran and Randall Delgado in the mix for rotation spots. The Braves could use their starting pitcher surplus to upgrade in other areas of need, such as center field and third base.

Paul Maholm had little trouble with his former team Monday, limiting the Pirates to two runs while striking out eight over seven innings.

Unfortunately, Jeff Locke only gave up one run, and a Starling Marte longball in the fifth proved to be the difference. Maholm has proved to be a nice pick-up for the Braves and finishes the year with a 3.67 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. He’ll be part of their postseason rotation. With the Braves' loss, the Nats are officially the NL East champs.

Paul Maholm scattered five hits across 6 2/3 scoreless innings in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Marlins.

Maholm fanned six and walked none in improving to 13-10 on the year, and 4-4 as a Brave. He's now the owner of a 3.71 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 132/50 K/BB ratio across 176 innings pitched. The ERA will tie his career best if it holds through his final start, while the strikeouts are already a new personal high.
