He'll take the place of the injured Matt Garza on the active roster. The 29-year-old has a .223/.257/.323 batting line over 266 major league plate appearances, all with the Orioles.

The Cubs will call up outfielder Lou Montanez before Tuesday's game against the Mets.

Montanez signed a minor league contract with the Cubs this winter and has waited patiently at Triple-A Iowa while batting .369 with five homers, 11 doubles and 43 RBI in 49 games. The 29-year-old should see action in the outfield while Marlon Byrd (facial fractures) is sidelined.

A bit of nostalgia, as the Cubs drafted Montanez third overall back in 2000, but he never made it up to the big leagues with them. The 29-year-old has just a .223/.257/.323 batting line over 251 major league at-bats. He'll attempt to win a bench spot in spring training.

Lou Montanez told Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com via text message that he has received a lot of interest, "especially from AL East teams."

Montanez, who became a minor league free agent after the season, is also drawing interest from a few Japanese teams. The 29-year-old outfielder has a .223/.257/.323 batting line over 266 major league plate appearances. He'll likely have to accept a minor league deal if he wants to stay in the United States.

Montanez was designated for assignment last week after batting just .140 in 57 at-bats with the Orioles this season. The move was a bit of a technicality, as the Tides' season is over. He could leave the organization as a minor league free agent during the offseason.

Montanez has recently ramped up his rehab from an oblique injury and went 4-for-9 in two games with Double-A Bowie this week. The O's weren't likely to call him up until the rosters expand in September, anyway.

Montanez has spent the past few days rehabbing with the GCL Orioles. We'll likely see him with the big club when the rosters expand in September. Montanez has been sidelined since late-June due to a strained left oblique.

Lou Montanez reported to the Orioles' spring training complex in Sarasota, Florida on Tuesday to begin rehabbing his left oblique injury.

Montanez will rest for a week before slowly ramping up baseball activities. He was placed on the disabled list retroactive to June 21 with a strained left oblique and probably won't return to Baltimore until the end of July. The outfielder was batting an ugly .140/.155/.140 in 57 at-bats.
